Slugging!! It’s so funny to see this as a “trend” right now. Here’s the thing, it’s probably fine to do every night, but you do need to consider some things. My favorite time to “slug” is right after a treatment like microneedling or a chemical peel. There’s nothing that beats it. That said, it’s not something I do on a nightly basis. Are you into slugging? How often do you "slug"?

On a note, if you have sensitive skin whether by a compromised skin barrier or otherwise, the ones with extra "good stuff" like cerave/aquaphor can still sting a lot! In this case, go for original plain vaseline or my favorite, "pure" whipped shea butter. Your skin will love you so much!
@DoubleMonoLR2 жыл бұрын
You could also use what people with eczema use, Cetomacrogol. It's very cheap and typically comes in a large container. I definitely find 'extras' in creams cause all kinds of problems too. People spend a fortune on fancy creams, but I'm sure if most of them tried simple stuff like cetomacrogol while thinking it was something fancy, they'd prefer it. Likewise with washing powder/liquid in the washing machine, I use lux soap flakes now.

I started slugging approx. 3 weeks ago and I FaceTimed my mom recently and she asked me what I had changed in my skincare because my skin looked amazing. It’s really because my skin doesn’t look as dry as it usually does this time of year! I will say I am the perfect candidate for it. I have eczema and have patches on my face and body. Usually flair up during the fall and winter. And I essentially use all the slugging ointments on my body already🤣 Currently doing it at least 6 nights a week, usually only skip it when i go to bed late because I don’t like the mess it makes on my pillowcase. Honestly this is something that my physician and dermatologist recommended to my mom to do for me from the time I was a baby and I had just stopped in high school and college for more “sophisticated” products. Back to a tried and true and my skin has never looked better!
@DoubleMonoLR2 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend Cetomacrogol if you don't already use it, unfortunately some doctors(ones that don't have eczema themselves) sometimes prescribe the wrong ointments. Also for me, using soap flakes in the washing machine, is much better than using powder/liquids(including 'sensitive skin' ones), as a lot of the skin problems can be due to allergies. Coconut oil can be quite good on the skin too, but it can give the reverse problem sometimes - getting some pimples.

@TheAnimeadoreable4 жыл бұрын
I think it can help with irritation and healing and dryness. Slugging isn't for everyone as Susan explained but that doesn't mean it isn't for anyone. If I had to recommend this, it would be for people that suffer from dry skin because those are the ones that can benefit from this since petroleum jelly is good at holding in moisture. I don't recommend using it as a straight moisturizer or to substitute moisturizers as it isn't meant to be used that way but more to hold in the moisture you have. Since you have rosacea, this might not be a bad option for you. I suffer from dry flaky skin and sensitivity since I was 13 and I use petroleum jelly to help with any dryness and irritation I feel and for my skin personally, it has helped me a lot. I use it at night as a face mask before going to bed. I wet my face with plain water, gently spread out the water, especially on my T-zone cuz it's a dry flaky mess and I then spread the petroleum jelly, focusing on the areas that need it the most, like my cheeks and T-zone and I am pretty generous with it and under eyes. I leave it there, do other stuff and I blot it with tissue paper, pressing it on my skin gently, don't swipe or rub, just blot, right before I go to bed. By blotting, it doesn't remove all of the jelly, just enough where your pillow doesn't stain. This has helped me a lot to the point where if I travel, I have to take petroleum jelly with me, it's a must have. I recommend you try this method for your skin since your skin I imagine would need a lot of moisture. Pay attention to your skin though as everyone's skin is different.

But I do notice that my scars and overall texture of my skin has greatly improved, maybe not exclusively because of the petroleum jelly (I use vaseline the aloe vera variant), but maybe a combination of all the skincare products I put on my skin and then lock them in under petroleum jelly. One time, I woke up with a scratch on my forehead, maybe from nightmares I damaged my own skin. I put petroleum jelly on it and after 1-2 days, the cut was not clearly visible anymore. Canadian here 😀 and as we are getting into winter, with temps ever moving downwards and spending majority of our time inside with dry furnace air, this sort of thing can be a very helpful technique once a week to protect the skin and stave off the rough patches.

I’ve been slugging for a few years now (because I have to) I have extremely unbelievably dry skin No joke, it’s bad. I used to wake up 2-3 times a night because my skin would be so dry it felt raw and I’d have to rush and put more moisturizer on. I was trying every clean/dermatologist recommended product under the sun. I struggled with this for years but one day out of desperation I decided to buy aquaphor and put it on my dry spots since it was literally the heaviest thing I could think of. Ive been slugging every day for a while now and that issue doesn’t really exist anymore :). I know I have an uncommon/extremely severe dry skin type but slugging kind of saved my sanity
@kalinagordley26543 жыл бұрын
I love to use vaseline on my body, hands and feet for sure. Elbows and knees. But on my face I only use it on spots that need it. I will use it on my eyes and lips as a protective layer before I use really strong active that might irritate. Or across my nose and cheeks if the winter wind is REALLY STRONG.

I feel like I was doing this with the farmacy’s honey oil or a rose hip oil years ago and then face oils became more accessible (now it’s common that oils have targeted purposes/actives) Then it made sense to use Aquaphor to seal everything in BETTER than a night mask layered onto skincare? Idk. I just feel like with trends and stuff people aren’t paying attention to what THEY need for THEIR skin. I don’t always need an oil, ointment, treatment or even a night mask. Same with certain treatments, I don’t always need the same products or regimen.

Didn't know what I've been doing for years now was called 'Slugging". Every night after double cleansing my face I use a pea size or more of Cerave Ointment and mix with a tiny bit of Cerave Normal moisturizer. Then after a few minutes I'll use Differen or Matrixyl 3000/Argireline Serum or both

using serums afterwards is pointless. Cerave Ointment is an occlusive, the serum won’t be absorbed. Put it before the ointment for maximum results

My cousin is a dermatologist and when I talked to her about it, I was genuinely surprised when she told me that I could use Vaseline or Aquaphor on it! i add lard to petroleum jelly. sometimes baking soda as a scrub. Lard was pretty much outlawed in the fifties along with coal tar. it does resemble human fat most closely. that is why they use pig parts for transplants. i whip it in with a steak knife. you apply it and then press a moist hot towel over your face. I sometimes use a flower vinegar on a compress.. i am old and am outside a lot, so my skin does need more.

I'm happy you mentioned that this is not something new. Infact Marilyn Monroe had it as a staple in her beauty regime both in the am and pm. She especially used it during photo shoot. She had tiny fine baby blonde hair all over her gorgeous face. When the camera would flash it would give the Vaseline covered tiny hairs the illusion or appearance of glowing. Something she was famous for. Even Elizabeth Taylor was so amazed with the cause of Marilyn's amazing glow she tried products for 3-4 years to try to achieve.the look but was unsuccessful until Marilyn was in a magazine and asked about her daily regimes for skin, exercise, and diet and she named the products she used faithfully and oddly like Vaseline most were not on the very expensive. She did have a few that were costly such as La.Mer and a red Chanel lip stick she built w/ A Mac Red lipstick and a L'Oreal reddish orange color I have somewhere but have e not used it for some time and cannot recall the name. She would often top that with a tiny dab of Vaseline for shine and moisture.
