I just now realized, the Baron could throw hands in that bossfight, so does that mean penelope was not only capable of beating our ass, but was able to do it in a fatsuit?
@nonamemusic83287 ай бұрын
When Baron was beat, the suit was smoking. Personally I think it implies that the suit was a machine, in itself implying extra strength and sturdyness. So no, she probably couldn't. Would be cool though ;)
@MysteriousTomJenkins5 ай бұрын
I think that while Nonamemusic is correct that the Baron Suit made her tougher, there is also the fact that Bentley says the Baron is a master boxer, and since we know Penelope is the Baron, even with a robot suit, that implies she is an accomplished boxer on top of an accomplished fencer as she defeats an experienced pirate in a sword fight. Probably could kick some ass, just not as much as Sly or Murray who are basically super human...metaphorically speaking.

One thing I love about Sly 3 is the continuation of a theme I didn't initially notice until B-Mask's retrospective of the series, the theme that the Cooper Gang is in way over their heads and their thieving gets more dangerous with each game. In Sly 1, besides Clockwerk, everything pretty much worked out well. Sly went in, kicked ass and got back pages of the Thievious Raccoonous. Even his family's mortal enemy, he still defeated triumphantly with hope for the future. Sly avenged his father and defeated the Clockwerk, it could only go up from there...right? Cut to Sly 2 where it actually starts out bad right away. Unlike the first game where you successfully steal and get away, in 2 your target has already been stolen and you get ambushed. Already the Cooper Gang is starting to get out played. Still, not too bad as you easily deal with Dimitri and then Rajan the first time but then it all goes to shit the second time. Neyla plays the gang like a fiddle and gets them and Carmilita arrested with only Bentley escaping. And while they eventually break free, being betrayed, imprisoned and essentially tortured left an impact on them, especially Murray. Then we get to Jean Bison who seems like another easy target until near the end where no matter how they cheat, they can't beat him until they literally have to replace the judges in a competition to give him a failing score...which he susses out, knocks the gang out and steals everything they acquired to give it to the final Claw Gang member. Another utter defeat, far from the glory days of knocking down Fiendish Five members one after another and the trend of failure keeps happening when they attempt to destroy Clockwerk's body only to ensure it is built, then Clockwerk gets somewhat revived. The gang scramble to defeat it and while they succeed, Bentley is crippled and Murray is further traumatized so even with them all getting away again, it was a pyrric victory for the gang with Murray even quitting. Finally we reach Sly 3 where pretty much every mission goes bad. Octavio nearly kills Bentley twice, the Mask of Dark Earth keeps evading them until it becomes Kaiju size, they didn't know they were getting played by Penelope the entire time, Tsao raided their base and almost killed Penelope and La Flee kidnapped Penelope and nearly killed Bentley and Sly and that doesn't even begin to cover the failure and desperation on Kaine Island. In Sly 1, Sly and the gang triumphantly beat everyone in their path, in Sly 2 they are shown that other criminals can be just as devious and cunning and in Sly 3 their plans almost always end up failing and them having to go to desperate strats just to survive. Sly 1 makes Sly seem like an almost invincible, bad ass thief and the rest of the series tears him down and makes him humble. In Sly 1 he stopped what was essentially a gang of super villains, then he gets to full on criminals and starts taking some serious Ls. Its just really cool to see this more subtle narrative in the series. You don't have to notice it to enjoy the games but when you do notice it (or have it pointed out), the story gets more depth. I also never noticed until pointed out that the Cooper Legacy was more toxic than its worth. All it ended up amounting to was a fancy book written by long dead thieves who horded their wealth and even after Sly finally enters the vault he still has to prove his worth by going through deadly obstacles. We also see in both 1 and 3 that their fame leads to jealousy and envy that creates monsters like Clockwerk and Dr. M and speaking of Dr. M. He was the Brains in Sly's dad's gang meaning he definitely helped him acquire some of the loot he has stored in the vault, so isn't it a little weird that Dr. M isn't allowed in? He contributed to some of that wealth and was locked out, meanwhile the muscle, McSweeny is rotting in prison. I am reminded of what Bentley said after rescuing Sly in 2. "If you can't count on a friend to bust you out of jail, what kind of friend are they?" With this in mind, it raises an eyebrow as to why McSweeny was in prison, how long was he there and why did Sly barely know him? This implies that Sly's dad potentially left McSweeny to rot and horded the treasure his gang gave which kinda validates Dr. M's hatred. He was always in his shadow and didn't even get to have the fruits of his labor. Really kinda highlights how the Cooper Legacy can be more toxic than admirable.

This review reaffirmed why this game is my favorite in the trilogy, the high points are some of the most memorable and enjoyable parts of a game I've ever experienced. Sanzarus fanfiction is a *joke* of a sequel compared to this greatness.

Replaying it I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did but you're right, the highs here are as high as they've ever been in the series, and I think it's enough to outclass any weaknesses the game has. It's gonna be really interesting revisiting Sly 4 in a few months. I remember the gameplay being good but as for the writing and characterization it *paled* in comparison.

Personally, I would say Sly 3 has the best gameplay, and Sly 2 and 3 are tied for best character development. I give the overall edge to Sly 2 because I think having just the core three Cooper gang members allows for you to better attach to them and resonate with their emotions. Also, I have big old rose-tinted nostalgia goggles for Sly 2.

I don't even find Thieves in Time that bad. Sure, the writing is bad, but it has a ton of fun missions. Some of the most fun gameplay in the series even. It also looks very good despite being more than a decade old at this point, and it's also scored by Peter McConnell, the same guy who did the music in Sly 2 and 3. It's a good soundtrack. Sly's ancestors are mostly fun as hell too. Feels like the game gets too much hate.

Sly Cooper 3 is just an overall fun game and I'm pretty sure if the series had just ended here most people would have been fine. The story is good, the characters are fun, and the story was nicely told. The character development between Bentley and Penelope was really nice and was an overall cute relationship that helped finally get Sly and Carmelita together, since it got Sly to think more about being a master thief and really try and peruse a relationship with Carmelita.

Having just played through the re-release (remaster? Reissue?) of this game on PS5, I was reminded of my biggest gripe about it from back in the day: a lot of the missions/jobs are bait-and-switch the deeper you get in the game. You're in the hideout, and you see "Sly has a job to pull off". Well awesome, he's my favorite character to play as. So you pick Sly, head out to the job start icon and by the end of the setup dialog you're playing as Bently (my least favorite). Well, game, why did you tell me Sly had a job to pull only to make me play the bulk of it (if not the whole thing) as my least favorite character to control? Bad form, SuckerPunch, bad form.

Dang dude really like the review so far (about 1/3 the way through) mike is on point and love the comedy style (Saw your post on reddit to find the video by the way) I'll add some thoughts or comments or something when I get to something juicy haha The Don octavio fight was so unnecessarily hard for me as a kid I probably did it 20 times Glad it wasn't just me that thought being able to sell the goods in 2 felt nicer than just getting the money straight away like in 3 I like how they trained you for the octavio boat fight with an earlier job DUDE THAT'D BE A PERFECT THEME WHY DIDN'T CRASH DO THAT (for real though, the sly 3 sound track is the best of all games I've played) Lemonade bar is my favorite mission in sly 3 and top 3 for the series easily just the dynamic of the team is so good Sly's face at carmalarga is tooooo good Guru was soooo fun to play with, but Penelope's RC vehicles were too slippery (the final level's RC mission was pretty tight though) The penelope twist was a BOMBSHELL when I was a kid freaking screamed when I was 10 at that (flight of fancy is my top 3 favorite hub in the series, same with the safehouse) General Tsao was such a "yeah he acts evil" character when I was young but damnnn the she's a women line works it so much more now that I'm older Kinda hated the Turrent level was too hard How did Bentley have slide show pictures of Tsao taking the computer and was shocked when he saw them when he had to compile them?? The detection to go on the scales was so messed up it ruined the fight Honestly loved the ship levels and loved the Dimitri missions, but I'm easy to please lol (I had no idea you were supposed to press L1 to move fast in the 2nd Dimitri level and got boned so much from that) Loved the cooper gauntlet level, top tier for sure

It's insane to me that this game was made in only a year. Could it have used slightly more time in the oven to add clue bottles and things like that, and maybe one additional level before the finale? Yeah. But just think about the sheer amount of creativity, different mechanics, combat upgrades, etc that was crammed into this one game in that little amount of time. Not to mention that the gameplay feels even more streamlined than it did in Sly 2, and how all of the character moments tie together so well.

I love the entire Sly series, (yes, even Thieves in Time), but Sly 3 has always been my favorite. Many prefer 2 and I can understand why, but Sly 3 for me borders on the most perfect perfection. It has a mind-blowing variety that never makes the game boring. All the missions are good, really all of them, unlike those of Sly 2 which were fluctuating, some excellent, some meh, especially those of Murray which are 90% boring (I like the one with the fight of the 50 guards, the rest is : take object and bring it here, destroy alarms etc., while in Sly 3 it has much more variety, such as the ball shape or the missions where you row). I really like the addition of the new characters (although I don't like the fact that they can only be used so little during the game, especially Dimitri who is only used 2 times). The only criticism I can give to the game is the absence of collectibles, I liked finding the bottles and treasures in Sly 2 (not in Sly 4, because the maps there are huge and it is difficult to find all the collectibles), especially the treasures that helped make money to buy upgrades, given that in Sly 3 you necessarily have to do forced grinding to get new upgrades. However, despite this criticism, the game is the best of all 4, and is my second favorite game of all time (for those wondering, my favorite game of all time is Spyro Year Of The Dragon). I look forward to a fifth and final chapter of the series, which gives a true and worthy ending to this series (also because the ending of the fourth game is simply unacceptable).

I have some grievances. The whole plan to form a gang ended up feeling unneeded in the climax because they ultimately didn't actually do anything to get into the vault that Bentley couldn't have already done. The RC car thing is easily something you could imagine Bentley doing. Guru only uses those sharks to get the cane back, which is something they only needed to do once they got caught so Guru wasn't really needed in the plan at all and only helped because of a coincidental happening. Panda King shoots a single firework in the intro and doesn't get even one playable segment in the climax. He shoots up the van and thats it in the climax. Dimitri does one thing (trying to help get the cane back) and fails. This is a bit more controversial but in the ending, with Sly pretending to have amnesia and Carmelita lying to him about his identity would technically make this "rape by fraud"... though that itself they definitely didn't think about lol. I also found it to just be a bit underwhelming, Sly the entire time was proud of his thief lineage and to give it up so easily I just don't think fits him at all or is really any bit entertaining. These days Guru himself may seem a bit culturally insensitive too, with how he's essentially the mystic aboriginal stereotype (though this makes one line from Bentley a bit funny in retrospect with how he talks about "cultural insensitivity"). I don't agree with what you said about Rajan either though, his background is clear, his actions are all realistic. He's not super funny but he's still interesting enough. Mask of Dark Earth is a much bigger offender as it has no explanation for what it is, why it does what it does or anything. Sly 3 essentially is an episodic game which I don't have a problem with it's just that the climax it had been building towards didn't really utilize the gang in the way I felt it should have. It's all based around after they got caught by Dr. M and nothing to do with their plans. Sly 3, along with Ratchet 3 and Jak 3 all had that sense of being a bit rushed and undercooked, though I think Ratchet 3 handled that best overall.
@MrJarheadTV Жыл бұрын
Your feeling about the plot are totally valid. Also for the record I do like Rajan, I think for comedic purposes I dunked on him too hard though lol. He's definitely not a bad villain or anything like you said he's solid. I was just trying to emphasize how much more of a connection to the villains I felt of this game and like I said I probably worded my feelings a bit poorly.

Another great review! Similar to you, I've always prefered Sly 2 over Sly 3, but I'd be lying if I said your video didn't make me question that. I think a replay might be in order for myself lol Man, remember how hype it was when Sly 4 finally got announced. Remember that? Remember when no one had played it yet so no one truly knew what the final product would be like? hmm... yeah... at least we got clue bottles back lmao
@MrJarheadTV3 жыл бұрын
It's always neat to hear when my videos can make people question their perspective on a game lol, it's really cool Sly 4 was one of the first games I REALLY anticipated the leadup for, and then yeah... the writing turned out to be pretty lackluster. I can't wait to take deeper look at it. But yeah atleast we got those clue bottles back, if only Sly 3 had them and treasures I'd probably be confident in saying it's my favorite.

2 reasons this game is the best: Opera of Fear, mission logos above the characters in HQ
@Angel_Auraa6 ай бұрын
What makes me prefer Sly 2 is that I find the writing in Sly 3 a bit more wonky. Especially Penelope. The pirate level and the one after sort of just feel like "filler" to me, I felt more interested in the antagonists and levels of Sly 2. That said, the Cooper vault was epic and I liked the ending. I consider Sly 3's ending to be canon and Sly 4 to be a fanfic.
@Angel_Auraa6 ай бұрын
I'll try to explain but my memory might be rusty. Spoilers: Penelope ends up being the main antagonist of Sly 4 or whatever and not once during Sly 3 did anyone question why she dressed up as the bad guy and sacrificed literally hundreds of lives in a plane flying tournament. Another writing thing I didn't understand was Carmelita suddenly being cold towards Sly after warming up to eachother at the end of Sly 2. It's like they rewrote her personality. I guess they fix this at the end. Sly teaming up with Dimitri, who killed his family. "But they can help eachother" yeah idk if I would do this, personally. So Dr. M is basically the Bentley of Sly's dad's squad, so how come Clockwerk never knew about him? Wouldn't he try to destroy the vault? Idk. I don't think there were any gangs in Sly 3, but in Sly 1 there was the Fiendish Five and in Sly 2 there was The Claw Gang. The villains just weren't as scary or interesting. Some were sort of comedic relief.
@Angel_Auraa6 ай бұрын
Lastly, I think the maps were a bit bigger in Sly 2. I timed myself running around for longer in Prague, India, Canada in Sly 2 then I did in Holland or Italy in Sly 3. Even the pirate town is tiny. I think they put all the level design budget in the Cooper Vault. Lol. 😂 But 2 and 3 were also created back to back which might have affected the budget. Also I think the enemy variety was more restricted in Sly 3. But it was also our first time seeing non-guard NPCs in the world which I appreciated (in Flight of Fancy.)

Sly 3 has always been my favorite the character interactions and missions are the best in the series in my opinion. Sly 2 probably has the best story but I think 3 has the best gameplay. The only thing for me is i wish 3 had clue bottles. Though as a kid i hated collecting them in sly 2. Even tho bonus challenges in 3 are fun and also an easy platinum for the sly collection.

Sly 3 would of been a masterpiece for me if we actually had the hidden treasures. The pirate feature felt like it was a design for the inevitable remaster for ps3 as they decided to push out sly 3 for the ps2 with the ps3’s inevitable release. Which was already announced at this point and nearly finished in development. As the pirate fights do a lot better fps wise on the ps3 remaster. Essentially a game prepared for the nextgen at the time, but was also made for the last gen in efforts to not lock sales. I do wish the pirate section had a better reward for each title you moved up for defeating enemy captains. Money was nice just felt way too late in the game as we lost the hidden treasure feature which in sly 2 was a major source of income. Was a good idea on paper, but with the tight deadline they gave themselves for the game essentially racing against completion or ps3 just didnt get executed correctly.

True, it would have been my undisputed favorite for my whole life if it had them tbh.

@@MrJarheadTV probably didnt see the end paragraph to my comment as I went back and revised it to be a bit more complete 😅. Definitely felt missing on the hub world as there were no vaults and no treasures to find, essentially no reason to do anything in the hub.

Dynamic duo is my favorite mission easily due to the fact that I myself am a girl who is partially blind and born with hydrocephalus and LMC as well as multiple sclerosis so it hits a lot of grounds for me plus I just love Bentley and Penelope they are just so cute together and I was not pleased with what they did in the fourth installment of the series hopefully they decide to release a fifth game and they let the two of them go back out again as a couple :-)

The Sly Cooper trilogy was amazing I wish I could like 4 more. I know we shouldn't have Clockwerk be too redundant, but it would have been nice to see why he was trying to nuke the ancestry as well La Paradox seems like a *very* cheap Clockwerk

The reason Bentley talks to Murray about his insecurity is because he understands that it's stupid and the dude just needs some support and perspective, that doesn't come from a mad monkey. Also Murray is the best person to talk to considering he's had to find himself and deal with his own insecurity. Hell it even reflects how Murray dealt with his own drawbacks since he wouldn't have been able to do it alone.

Sly 2 is my personal favorite because the overall vibe of the game really stuck with me. A real standout level out of all the games for me was episode 4. Starting alone as Bentley had been soul crushing for me when I was younger and the overall level design was positively fantastic. Although I will say that the original trilogy was so strong that I can respect any of the games being chosen as someone's favorite. The fourth game though? I've only met one person who said it was their favorite and that had me scratching my head a bit. It was fun and all, but it was so weak in comparison to the original trilogy and it just didn't feel like a Sly game to me.
