SM64 - To the Top of the Fortress - 0x A Presses

I collect the star To the Top of the Fortress in Whomp's Fortress using 0 A presses. This video is TAS.
This video is an improvement from my previous video in which I collected this star in 1 A press. You can find that video here: • SM64 - To the Top of t... . Since then, I worked out a way to get onto the tower without pressing A. To do this, I have Mario throw a cork box remotely using the hat-in-hand object displacement glitch. Then while the cork box is falling, I dive recover onto the side of the elevator and store 26 vertical speed by cancelling a dive recover. The cork box then collides with Mario, both pushing him off of the elevator to activate his vertical speed and providing helpful horizontal movement. While Mario is being pushed, I ground pound into a strategically placed 100 coin star, thereby using a star dance clip to get onto one of the tower's platforms. Here is a play by play of what I do. I first enter Bob-omb Battlefield in order to place the HOLP in a precise position. This position is above the mountain, and so it’s necessary to construct a goomba staircase to reach it. This is the debut of a more efficient goomba staircase I developed, which makes use of goomba clusters. A goomba cluster is a formation of goombas placed remotely using one HOLP, but thrown at different angles so they have slightly different hitboxes. This technique vastly improves the goomba staircase, resulting in a quadratic number of goombas rather than exponential. Once the goomba staircase is complete, I use it to place the HOLP in the correct position, and then exit out of BoB and go to WF. Once inside, I collect 99 coins and use object displacement to destroy one of the cork boxes next to the tower, allowing me to place the 100 coin star next to one of the tower’s platforms. I then bring up the second cork box, and remotely throw it into myself right after I store vertical speed on side of the elevator. Using the cork box, the vertical speed, a ground pound, and a star dance clip, I am able to get onto the tower!
So what is vertical speed conservation? When Mario does a dive recover and lands, the variable that maintains his vertical speed does NOT reset to zero. So, if Mario lands while he is falling, then this vertical speed will be negative. But if Mario lands while he is still ascending (as is the case when he dive recovers on the side of the rising elevator), then this vertical speed will be positive. This vertical speed WILL reset to 0 if Mario moves at all, but punching, breakdancing, and being pushed by other objects will not affect it. Anyway, once Mario becomes airborne, then his vertical speed takes instant effect. So by storing a positive vertical speed and not resetting it, I am able to have Mario "pop up" when the cork pushes him off of the elevator.
So what is a star dance clip? The star dance clip is a technique where Mario collects a star, thereby allowing him to get onto ledges he wouldn't normally be able to get on. You see, when Mario collects a star, he enters a state where he is able to grab onto ledges. But when he grabs on in this state, instead of entering the grabbing on animation, he just appears at the top of the ledge and does his star dance. Thus, I am able to reap the height benefits of a ground pound while also being able to grab onto ledges.
So what is the HOLP and hat-in-hand object displacement glitch? You see, when Mario has his hat in his hand, objects he releases don't appear in front of him, but instead appear at a point known as the HOLP. The HOLP represents the last place Mario held an object without the hat in hand glitch. There was no way to place the HOLP in the desired location from within WF, and so it was necessary for me to place the HOLP there in a course that had a more accommodating layout, namely BoB. The HOLP doesn't reset between courses, so when I switch to WF, the HOLP is already in the desired spot, and I can release a cork boxes there. tl;dr The entire first half of the video is setting up a glitch, that would make the box pop up in a certain angle once he threw it with the hat in hand glitch, which would allow him to gain vertical speed, but that speed alone wasn't enough to get up to the platform, thus he collected 100 coins to spawn the star, because once Mario collects a start he can grab ledges before the star dance animation, but he just skips the climbing animation and just gets onto the platform instantly. And once he finally spent 12 minutes setting up he is able to get onto the platform, continues going up and is able to collect the star. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not entirely sure myself if this is the case.

To put it more eloquently, while working on Kazooie, they came up with the idea of Stop n Swap to take advantage of a quirk in the N64 hardware. The models of N64 out at the time would hold data in memory and continue to function without the cartridge for about twelve seconds, plenty of time to swap out cartridges for the feature to work. However, about the time they started on Tooie, Nintendo produced a new hardware model for the N64 that only held data in memory for about a second after taking out the cartridge, which made the whole thing infeasible.

TheDisarminghinkle No A pressing means you can't jump, which is a main part of Mario games. If it were no B presses, that would just lose attacking, which would be much easier to work around on most missions.

I was going to say you could easily get every star without pressing B since that's just the punch button, but it might actually be difficult/impossible, since you need to punch to grab bowser's tail to throw him

No. You can't change the control scheme on the N64, and the point of this run is that it should work on the original version of the game (which is the N64 version).

+TheMarioZone Actually, TASing involves playing the game in frame advance mode. So it took him 2 days to record the inputs in frame advance, and then he replayed it in the emulator while having the recording software activated; that way he can actually show it to us at full speed.

Cammi Davidson that actually wasn't a pause buffer. in TAS if you have the same mapped for multiple frames then it just counts as holding the button in game. pausing allows this to be overlooked so he could have the same input two frames in a row.

Pause buffering is only pause buffering if it's utilizedi guess. So you wouldn't really say he pause buffered anything. If you're still confused then join the club. I'm a lil fuzzy on all this myself too but that's the gist of it.

Pause buffering is using a pause menu buffer an event, usually a button being pressed. The buffering means that you input something that doesn't do anything immediately, but that input is being ignored until it does do something. In Ocarina of Time for example, you can use the A button while moving around or in the menu, but while the menu itself is animating opening and closing the A button usage isn't tracked. This means that although the animation of the game draws stuff every frame, as far as the physics and input knows, you instantly go from the pause menu back to the main part of the game. A lot of stuff will only happen when the button is first pressed (otherwise you could hold A to jump as soon as you hit the ground in Mario), and the only way the input knows if you pressed the button just now is if the button wasn't pressed the last time it checked. Remember how the input in OoT thinks you instantly go from pause to unpause, when it actually takes a while? If you start holding the A button during that transition, that input carries over (or is buffered) to the first physics frame when you're back in the action. Pause buffering is done largely in non-TAS speedruns to give them extra time to hit a difficult input.

If you press a button (not THE a button) on two consecutive frames, the game just thinks you are holding the button. But, if you press->pause->press, the game knows you are pressing the button twice. So, you can artificially spam faster!

Why not? Run across the bridges, jump up the stairs one at a time, two jumps up the elevator, side jump onto the fortress and I'm pretty sure you can just jump them one at a time from there. I went to try it myself just now and saved the stair jumps by diving into the tree, using one jump to get to the elevator. Didn't know how to get the star without jumping so it took me a total of 11. With more side jumps I could probably do it in like 8?
