Small Canadian manufacturer weighs in on tariffs.
I have been asked about my perspective on tariffs quite and bit the last couple of days and how it will affect our business and customers. So I decided to do this video. Please take it with a grain of salt. I'm just a simple blue collared fellow without any kind of formal education that has experienced a moderate amount of success with my small manufacturing business.
I really hope for everyone's sake, and regardless of what happens that we all prosper in the end and build a better future for the next generation

Honesty and transparency. Wouldn’t expect anything less from you Andrew. I honestly don’t believe this will become reality. These are negotiating tactics which aren’t good for anyone in the long run. Threaten big things to get the little things done more expeditiously is what I believe is happening.

I purchased a 22/28 (with Dual Log lift) from you 2 years ago, and now have an Axis on order. Was told by your staff that mine is slated to go into production next week 2/11/2025. Glad to see tariff lifted, Raleigh NC here. Sweating here worried about where I could come up with the extra 25%, as I've already paid for it in full (took loan out). Sold my 17VS-C (14 hours), and went with your unit, which best fit my needs. Eastonmade is by far greatest splitters built. I went from Box Store Splitter, to then Timberwolf, to then 22/28 Easton, to then WoleRidge 17VS-C, and now getting the Axis soon (2 weeks)! Thanks for video, and for building best splitter on the market- per an honest non sponsored user :). Love your splitters !

@@EastonmadeWoodSplitters yes sir, and THANK YOU! I ONLY went with the other vertical because of the quick lead time! HUGE Mistake! I was able to sell it, had 14 hours on it. I sold it for $4,380 less than what i paid for it, huge loss even at 14 hours only on practically new unit! Live and learn! I've learnt my lesson.

Andrew, never feel like you have to apologize to Americans about being proud of your country. You should be proud to be Canadian. I've hunted and fished all across Canada and have met a bunch of Canadians at shooting competitions. Guys like you are in the same boat guys like me here in the US are in. Our governments have been taken over by idiots who are drunk on power. I'm hopeful that we can get spending under control with this administration, but it's tough when half the country is getting government assistance. Hopefully for your businesses sake we can get this figured out.

Hey Andrew, Mike here from Calabogie Rustic Woodworks, just up the 511 from you guys. I really like what you have to say here and being a small business in Canada can appreciate what you are going through. Now for us we are far more localized and fortunately don't rely on exports, but I'm glad to hear that your U.S. customers are going to continue to support you. I've been following your equipment for a few years now and will be down to see you this spring for a new splitter. Keep up the good work my friend. Cheers.

As others have said, I think this was about macro level political negotiations versus an indictment on any great companies like yours. I am proud when I buy American, but like most Americans, I end up buying a lot of things made in part or in full in other places. When it comes to buying higher end products, it makes sense to do research and choose quality products that best match the need at hand. I'm a proud customer of Eastonmade Wood Splitters and will buy more from you in the future. You make quality products and treat customers like people - we have visibility into your company, your employees, and your processes. That means a lot! Keep up the good work!

Andrew, I am not a wood nut, am too old (86) to get into it but I watch so many vids of both firewood and sawing. You did a great job with this video, it showed your intelligence re: business. My sons used to net 53% in their business but is quite a bit less because the volume has quadrupled and then some selling to high volume manufactures. Listening to your monologue you pretty much nailed it. It is understandable why you are so successful.

Have you ever been across the Canadian border? It is serious. Do you know that the United States is responsible for people entering the United States, not Canada? Canada controls who comes into THEIR country, not the United States and vice versa. To blame Canada for less than 1% of all drugs coming into the US is absurd. Only Americans that know little to nothing about borders speak like you. Your clown and Fox News have you believing that the borders are open. Get off your couch and go drive up there. Go check it out. Oh that would be too much for you to do wouldn't it. Yeah, I understand.

Andrew kudos for making this video! It’s always good to hear you talk with respect about your competitors!! That is a sign of a company who makes great quality products that sell themselves without having to throw dirt on other companies to make theirs look better! I’m glad the tariffs were not applied on you. It’s great to hear your customers were understanding as well if they had to pay it! I believe that it’s big scary, very direct talks by our administration to get stuff done now with no beating around the bush. I believe it will all work out. Especially on our Northern border! I would say you are one of the most respected people in the wood business. You and your company are outstanding. Your wood splitters ARE the best in the business. I believe there is a bigger picture and point to the tariffs. Canada is our closest ally in the world. We should be separate countries and work in unison. I love your Canadian pride, as you should have. It will all work out, as the tariff's were delayed. Your company is first class. Your relationship with the customer does not stop after the sale. If someone ever has a problem with there spitter, be it a part goes or anything else, you and your team will work to help them. To me, that is what separates you from most other splitter companies. That after sale help and service. Please don't ever stop that. Your product and service is of such quality that I would be willing to pay the extra for the tariff. I am happy to see that many other Americans are willing to do the same. You shouldn't eat the cost of the tariff as you are a business that has to make money to survive. Keep up the great work and I look forward to buying another splitter from you in the future. Hopefully I will make it to a show one of these days and get a chance to meet and chat. 👍

What the tariff threat to Canada specifically is REALLY about is Canada’s consistently, year after year, abysmal NATO contributions. Canada is 5th from the bottom (out of 31) at upholding their commitment. 1.37% in 2024 is not acceptable from a first-world-country and that is an improvement from previous years. It is no secret that Canada is abusing their proximity to the US, knowing full well the US would never tolerate an invasion of Canada, strictly due to their location, relative to the US. This is something Canada has been skating along with for decades, pushing their luck to the limit and letting other NATO countries foot the bill. If I were Canadian I’d be ashamed of my government’s blatant willingness to “hide” behind the US’s guaranteed protection.

Great video Andrew. I agree 100% let’s all just take a breath here and not panic. I from Ontario as well and I think everything you said is 100% spot on. I hope that we do get a secure border out of it. There is a saying good fences make for good neighbours. And there is illegal activity going both ways on the border. Both sides need to figure a way out to secure it. This is no easy task when you look at the size of the border and in some places the type of terrain. But if both side sit down and figure it out I’m sure they can come up with a solution.

A consideration for you maybe if / when 25% US Tariffs come in. Consider exports to Australia! We are fellow members of the Commonwealth, Allies & have vaguely similar timber industries. We have a similar population to Canada (~25Mllion). So we wouldn’t replace your US Market but we might maybe replace perhaps 10% of that US market which is better than non. And we have no tariffs. Just a suggestion. 👍👍👍🇦🇺

I probably imagine the ornery ones got ornery when they realized you were going to keep their deposit and they actually just didn't have the extra 25% to follow through on the purchase.

I suspect with the Canadian dollar so low compared to the US dollar that USA customers will still see value even with a 25% tariff. And anyone already owning a Canadian wood splitter will still have to order spare parts as they tend to wear out over time.

For 1, just because one neighbor throws more trash in my yard than the other doesn't mean i should overlook the one who throws less. But the quantity isnt the real issue. Due to Canada's easy process for foreign visitors, a terrorist can simply hop on a plane, visit Canada and then walk across your border into the US. In addition your boarder patrol primarily works within a very short distance of a checkpoint. If they see someone outside that distance they camm another department which does not even have the authority to to search. I dont thin asking CA to beef uf the boarder was to much to ask for. It would suck to pay more... I just made a large purxhase from Woodland Mills, and am planning on a second, but unfortunately their product isnt 25% better than my second option. I have looked into your product and it seems like quality. I was in the market for a splitter.... but after reviewing my options, seeing what i like vs what i didnt i decided to buy an older used one and tear it apart and weld up my own.

I think you nailed it with that response. Thank you for the comment as the visas was something I didn't touch on.

Like I have said before American's keep blaming Canada for everything coming in to the us but what are YOUR BOARDER GAURDS DOING when everything is getting to the us.

I had a job at the border some years back. We drove the project to what we thought was our end and turned down a gravel road to a asphalt road a few hundred yards away. We thought it would be a quicker way back. Kip and I was completely shocked when we got stopped by CA boarder patrol. Apparently we crossed the border and didn't know it. The point being, I have personal experience on how little your border agents care someone crosses your border. So don't give me your collier than how BS. Keep your trash on your side of the fence

Since the majority of your customers are US based, why not build another factory in the USA. No need to worry about 25% tariffs then. The US welcomes Canadian based companies to expand here Andrew, I admit I don’t know a whole lot about this matter but it seems like a logical solution.

I wish it were that simple. The cost for moving the equipment or rebuilding would be astronomical. We also have 55 incredibly well trained and skilled employees. Really hard to duplicate that.

@@EastonmadeWoodSplitters Maybe, just maybe, you should ask your king trudy to close the border!!! If he does that and Trump still puts on the tariff, then you would have something to whine about. If the border is NOT closed,I have NOOOO sympathy!!!!!!

Andrew you need to realize that everything in the Geneva convention that says you can't do is because of what the Canadians did in WW1. Literally a list of you can't do this. Not looking for trouble, just saying we are all capable of being on the wrong side of things. Respect you and all you do. As your granddad said don't panic. This will all work out and we will move forward.
