It wasn't simply handed over. The residents of Newfoundland voted to join Canada, post-war Britain was happy to let them go and Canada was happy to have them. Technically it was a vote between three options (stay a colony, join Canada, independence as a dominion again). Independence got a plurality on the first vote but in the run off between the top two choices, joining Canada won a slim majority - 52.3%.

About Canada. It existed prior to the making of the federation in 1867. From 1534 to 1763, Canada was the name of a region of New-France, consisting of the Saint-Lawrence and Great Lakes Valley (parts of modern day Québec and Ontario). After the British conquest and the treaty of Paris in 1763, Canada was known under the name of Province of Quebec until 1791, then divided in two parts: Upper Canada (south of modern day Ontario) and Lower Canada (Saint-Lawrence valley). Then in 1840, the two regions got united again under the name of Province of Canada until 1867. You also forgot that Newfoundland joined the federation in 1949 and used to be a former British dominion as well.

They organized the referendums in Tuscany, Parma, Lucca and Modena and they invaded the Papal State in 1860. For Canada, you did leave out the acquisition of Newfoundland and Labrador from the British in 1949, thus joining the Confederation that same year. Apart from that, the most recent change was the creation of the territory of Nunavut, having been split off from the Northwest Territories in 1999. In recent years, there had been talks between the Canadian government and the Turks and Caicos islands in the Caribbean. They've twice stated their desire to become a part of Canada, but nothing's been done about it, due to the logistical and constitutional issues such an inclusion would bring. Mainly the issue of a vastly different economic structure, as well as whether or not it would be a new province, or merged into an existing one, like Nova Scotia.

The beginning was slow. This was basically a tiny fortress in the middle of nowhere which was given to the 3rd or 4th son of the grand Duke of Kiev. Since Kiev went into decline due to the Mongol invasion and trade issues with byzantine the city states were much more independent. Moscows main trick was to get the orthodox metropoliit to reside permanently in Moscow. It increased the income and political Influence. It's influence bacame even bigger when byzantine fell and Moscow became the last holder of orthodoxy. Also Moscow had mostly pretty nice relationships with golden horde. The horde gave out the right to certain dukes to collect tax for them so the moscovites were often in the more favorable position . The rulers of Moscow were simply very smart guys.

8:21 That is a map of Moscow and the surrounding regions, showing when each part was conquered (the numbers in red are years) MOCKBA is Moscow, and BO(upside down squarish weird U)O(upside down L)(a square on top of two curved lines)a is Vologda. If you want, I can translate the whole thing, but it might be too late for that.

Your videos have been great. This one, however, has something that bothered me. Around the 6 to 9 minute time period, maps are shown without any ocean borders and it is difficult to get the context from a green or a red "blob" which is supposed to show something. Please continue your good work, and pay attention to the invisible outlines of coastlines. Having coastlines gives context.

To clarify a bit the Grand Master that secularized the Teutonic Order didn't intermarry with the Hohenzollerns of Brandenburg, he was himself a Hohenzollern of a different branch which eventually ran out of heirs
@saggi2014 жыл бұрын
Also the shift to Brandenburg-Prussia and eventually the Kingdom Of Prussia was largely because Prussia was outside the HRE which Allowed the Hohenzollern to claim higher titles

No new additions to Canada after Newfoundland in 1949. However, in 1974, the Turks and Caicos Islands, in the Caribbean, made a request to the Canadian government to be included as a Canadian province. They were turned down.

At 1:04, the map depicting 1775 America looks to be a bit flawed. It says that Quebec is south of the Great Lakes where many current US states are situated now? Maybe I'm reading it wrong and it means to point further north, but it looks odd.

With regard to Canada, you left out Newfoundland, which remained a separate colony, and after the First World War was made a Dominion. It was under British administration in the late 1930s and most of the 1940s, following bankruptcy arising from the high cost of a railway from east to west across the island. In 1949 it became a province of Canada.
