After an unforgettable series finale, many fans thought they'd seen the last of the morally ambiguous Tony Soprano and his family. But almost fifteen years after "Made in America" aired, David Chase has returned with another look at the the Newark mob scene. This time, however, it's a prequel film, featuring the late James Gandolfini's son, Michael Gandolfini, playing a younger version of the role his father defined. As with any David Chase project, there's plenty of overlooked details and clever references hidden in the scenes, so let's break it down. Here are the small details you missed in "The Many Saints of Newark."

this was dicki moltisanti's story. moltisanti literally means many saints. In the time dicki's story takes place, tony is too young for that event to transpire. in case you missed it, Jackie was part of the ice cream heist, and you literally watch tony realize what kind of business his "family" is in as he goes from a child to a young man. The development is he doesn't understand it, then he rejects it after dicki distances himself, then he longs for it after dicki's death and that sets him on the path to become who he is. idk what more you could want or what movie you watched but everything you're asking for is either non-applicable or already there.

I think it was a brilliant movie with nuances like having Tony meet Dickie at Holsten's (which didn't obviously happen, but made my skin crawl), answering the question I have long knew the answer to (that Tony lied to Chrissy about how his father was killed) and why Tony was a subtle racist. This was a good film DONT let these people fool you were going to get a lot of explanation here soon I love how they used dickie in this his death will be used to push tony closer to junior I especially like how Christopher grows up thinking his dad is a drug addict because he was found with livs pills we are going to see tony become evil and I’m excited Michael did a great job playing his fathers character this is a trip down memory lane nothing will ever be as good as the sopranos

@@gigidayz6936 In the flashback during the show it is seen as how Tony "remembered" the incident. It may not have actually happened exactly that way. Also, during the show Janice said that Junior and his goomah were there when Johnny Boy shot a hole through Livia's hairdo because it was Junior's goomah that told the story. We learn from the movie it was actually Dickie and his goomah that were there.

The interaction between Vera and Michael was most like Livia and Tony's when he was at the kitchen table protesting that he never used pot and complained, "I'm always bein' accused!!" and she retorted with her famous, "Oh, poor you!" Loved it.

Was the movie perfect no, but it open up so many paths to go down in that universe. For example I was fascinated with Johnny and Olivia I want more of their story, also show us Johnny and Tony interacting as Tony dips his toes into the underworld, so yeah....more movies please.

David Chase’s biggest mistake was not having this written by Terry Winters and directed by Tim Van Patten. Anyone listen to “Talking Sopranos? They won’t even mention Van Patten’s name other then to say “Directed by Tim Van Patten”.

@@jjcnyc6313 I don’t know but it’s very apparent that will say nothing about him when the guy directed 19 or 20 episodes. The newest episode is about the movie and they interviewed Sandro Nivola who mentioned that Van Patten is his neighbor and they share a wall and told them what advice he gave him about meeting with David Chase. Nothing from Michael and Steve. Not the first time either.

Yes, I picked up on that too. It's obvious that dickie suffered from depression, a running theme in the sopranos. I also feel like he had "therapy sessions" with his uncle in prison, it was his way too get some guidance.

@mjohnson5030
@mjohnson5030 2 жыл бұрын
I agree that they crammed too much story into one movie. This would have been a fantastic miniseries. The whole movie could have been spread over a dozen episodes ending in Dickie's death. In that scenario, all the characters could be flushed out. As for "social justice", you must be new to historic fiction and to David Chase. The historic Newark Rce Riots were important IRL plot devices in the series, mentioned numerous times and involved in many plots. If you think David Chase would base a prequel in the Newark riots and NOT use it as an opportunity to introduce a character who is victim of both the protagonist AND law enforcement, then you don't know Chase at all.

05:20 "But there is no indication in this scene that they are a couple yet". Yes there is. She is wearing Tony's varsity letterman jacket. In US culture, a boy gives a girl his letterman jacket as a "going steady" gift which also serves as a "she's taken" warning to other potential suitors. No, they are definitely dating in that scene. Edit: Also, did you see how she was staring at Tony after he borrowed a dime at the payphone? They were clearly dating. Did you even watch the movie, Looper writers?
