I'm from Troy (30 minutes north of Detroit), and they still have a couple rigs from the mid 1980s. As they're a volunteer department, the city is very stingy on what gets replaced, and when. Thankfully, the 2 units from the 80's are brush-type apparatuses and are not used all that much.

As a Filipino and Watching the news too in my country. Everytime there’s a fire it’s not only Firefighters involved but also the populace. Some of them risk their lives really to help the firefighters even without equipment some even died because of it. But that highlights how bad the situation is here and we do not only use boot jackets and helmets but Gardening hoses and also water pails which we try to get from a river which is quite further from where the fire is in some cases.

I ready a comment that this has been approved. This struck a cord with me. I’m a Chief in a small volunleer station I western canada who recently finally got an upgrade on our main pumper. We cover a VERY small village but have a large municipality plus in square miles we cover and our 1969 Ford/Tribault cab over was a big issue for response time. Luckily for us, fund raising and donations worked out. Sometimes the public is happier with donations that they know is going directly to a cause than a tax hike. But for an organization like this the long term revenue is probably more sustaining anyway. Stay Safe Brothers and Sisters.

Indeed. Props to the firefighters that maintain(ed) it. Pride in your station is a big thing, and it warms my heart to see the old station, and the apparatus, in such good shape. This coming from the son of a (long deceased) Chicago Fire Department employee. I'm glad to hear they got their money, too - centrally locating a new fire station is vital. I hope they have the funding to keep at least one apparatus and/or a Squad (volunteers, perhaps, if it's not already a Volunteer department) at the old station for certain emergencies.

@@1999Cheker GDR? Our oldest Truck is a Mercedes L1500 from 1940, the inside is still painted in "luftwaffengrau" because it was used on the airfield until the end of war. We would even miss our W50 and Robur-Trucks from the GDR - especially the robur is able to go to offroad areas where modern trucks would have to stop. That helped a lot during the fire on the Truppenübungsplatz Lübtheen.

@@1999Cheker Its still in use when all available water cannons are needed - at least about 4 to 5 times a year. We have a chemical factory near to - and a coal lighter factory at our town, which stores thousands of tons of fuel and alcohol. Up to now this factory has burned once almost every year, at least partially with 2 or 3 storage halls and Trucks being destroyed. There, for example, the Mercedes is also used until today. It is not a purely classic vehicle for display. For historic purposes they use an old Horse cart from the 19th century with a water tank and pump, which was in Use until 1921.
