95% of LA County Engines have 3 man staffing. In an area, such as Inglewood (where this fire was) rigs are stacked up on each other which is why so many are there so fast.

Being a rural firefighter in the 1990s early 2000s, I never complained about too many guys on the fireground. We had one where we were first due mutual aid with 4 guys and the only guy for the town we responded to was quite old and by himself with the engine. We had no one else show up for over 45 minutes. That was a big ball of suck. It was a 2 story house with waist deep snow all around. Many hands make light work.

My station has Active 911. We love it! (So long as Dispatch actually sends the Active notification.) Also, love the nod to Firefighter Fenton. Can confirm: More people on scene is good. I would rather have people show up, stand around for a few minutes twiddling their thumbs, and be released by IC - instead of having 4 guys on scene and needing to wait for more because those 4 aren't enough. That's a pretty common lesson taught to new firefighters now, and I'm glad for it!

If the interior was packed full of oxygen starved, high temperature gasses and cans of gasoline, opening that garage door would have set it off into their faces. You leave it to suffocate while you insert a cone of water through the window to cool the gasses and soak the material. Then, you can go in and open the garage door conventionally. You think that monstrous ladder they set on the pool side was a great idea? How about the useless and dangerous roof work?

When I saw a closed garage door and French doors around the pool, I immediately thought it was an enclosed walled off space. If built right, with only 3-5 people there, that building will be a PAIN to deal with as it wasn't originally a living space so how many walls are inside, is the attic walled off or is it a vaulted ceiling, etc. etc. Never underestimate a structure's ability to make your life a living hell.

this is just like any fire in my region: each company assigned a job by the OIC, district chief, deputy chief, or chief of department and doing it specifically but also ready to assist the others should there be an issue. I see one ladder company for cutting the entrance, one engine with a line to attack, one engine for securing egress, one ladder company for ventilation, one ladder company for S&R, one engine for RIT…each has a role but can move to other roles immediately manpower is a beautiful thing: use it when you have it!

My biggest issue with the whole thing is improperly wearing SCBA. If the strap exists, it needs to be fastened and adjusted, or it is not properly worn. This is a lack of leadership and training. Every SCBA manufacturer requires all strap to be properly worn or you are not using it per manufacturer recommendations. Read that to say "insurance will not cover you if there is an accident".
@CShivery
@CShivery 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly! My shift is big on training, and whether the scenario is a floor collapse, crawling through hoarding conditions, or even a partial wall collapse, not having your waist strap buckled completely screws everything up for you, as well as a RIT crew that might have to pull you out.

I used to work fairly big city EMS, but my hospital-based company covered several surrounding counties as well. You’d be blessed if city fire showed up to an unconscious non-coding patient, and they would refuse to come for lift assistance even if you specifically requested them. County fire, on the other hand, would literally respond to all medical calls. On the off chance we got city fire on a call, I always made it a point to clear them pretty quick if we didn’t need them. When I picked up shifts in the county, I’d wave off fire and they’d come stand around until we cleared the scene anyway. One night my county partner explained that it was viewed in the county as somewhat disrespectful to clear them early as they were there to help. I always appreciated them showing up, but I was so used to not having them that it always threw me off!

You do not cut a garage door like that. If the garage flashes or backdrafts the volume of fire out of that square or rectangular opening will give you a real shocker. Cut a triangle in the door which allows the panels to fall into the garage. Especially useful when you encounter a roller type door as the top will not collapse into the lower sections of the door. It also allows you to possibly open the door eventually using the door rails as the integrity of the door isn’t destroyed

Better to have too much manpower on the scene than not enough. In my part of the country there’s a paid full-time department where the “normal” staffing for the entire department is 6. And that’s on a “good” day, nobody on vacation or out sick. 5 is more common. Now suppose 2 are out on a medical run and now you have 3 to deal with a structure fire until mutual aid arrives.

This is an older home and may have had a shallower roof like 4/12 or even a flat roof and then the owner remodeled with a steeper pitched roof without removing the old roof. I've seen this a few times. Also , the doors appear to be very good security doors. This is in Inglewood, CA which has some sketchy areas so this little building could be hardened for security. The standard residential response matrix for Los Angeles County is 3 engines, ladder truck, paramedic squad and Battalion chief so 12 to 16 firefighters on hand and everybody wants to get in the game. I'm sure the guys were not happy about this little house almost getting the best of them.

This is in LACoFD jurisdiction... usually an "attic in an attic" is a tell tale sign of a Grow House. The extreme security & strengthening of French doors, kind of back ups that assumption. This is a typical practice with garage conversions through out So. Cal. Lastly, a typical first alarm structure response in California is 4 Eng, 1 Truck, 1 Rescue Ambulance and a BC.... that would bring 23 FF's to the incident.

The guy forcing the door tried again and again and again to try to force an INWARD swinging door in an OUTWARD direction. If he had merely changed direction on his prying he'd have blown that door right open. At some point you need to stop and reassess if something isn't going right the way you expect. The most disappointing part of that whole thing is that NO ONE tries to help him. That officer standing in the yard 5 feet away watching should especially have intervened when it was apparent something was wrong. Ask him whats wrong, give him a tip, hold the halligan while he drives it with the flathead. At the very least send a second crew member to help. First and foremost size up the door and look for things that are off or unusual. If you see double doors with a jamb strip down the middle like that, they swing inward. If you can see a gap between the doors they definitely swing outward and may swing both ways on a commercial property. Knowing how things are put together will tell you how they come apart. This whole video feels like they just weren't having a good day. The culmination of that is the chainsaw going in the drink which is fished out of the pool at the end. Sometimes things just go wrong.

I'm going to have to disagree with vertical ventilation at all in this scenario. In anything you do on the fireground you have to do a risk/benefit analysis and this didn't pass the test in my opinion. The risks are pretty much the same as any other time you're venting above a fire such as falling off the roof, falling through the roof, slipping on a roof while holding or operating tools, burns, and electrocution. As another person pointed out in the comments it is also reasonable to assume that they may be sitting on top of a chemical fire being that it appears to be an poolhouse so add that as another potential hazard. On the benefit side, I don't see much. It's a very small structure. Compartmentalized or not, I highly doubt there's any fireproofing other than ordinary sheetrock which I also have to assume was not intended to give any sort of rating, even though it will to some degree. The point is, venting isn't going to have any defensive effect on a structure that small. The only other possible benefits would be to a potential victim or interior crew. Having said that, this structure is so small that once entry is made, a quick knockdown of the bulk of the fire is going to be imminent. Fitted out or not the travel distances in that structure are minimal. I'm not a big fan of horizontal ventilation in general but in this case I think it's the only one that should have been used. It poses very little risk to the crew as long as it's coordinated and it will help relieve some heat and pressure on the inside and give a little bit of a lift of the smoke. I think they took unnecessary risks for little gain.
@JB91710

There is almost No situation where Vertical Ventilation is a benefit. Horizontally venting the fire room or soaking a smoldering/suffocating area is the way to protect entering firefighters.
@WhiteNoise493
@WhiteNoise493 2 жыл бұрын
@@JB91710 I have to wholeheartedly disagree. Vertical venting is extremely effective when done correctly, much more so than horizontal ventilation. It's basic physics. @CShivery
@CShivery 2 жыл бұрын
Typically yes. Even if hired as a "lateral transfer," showing up with all your certs from your previous department, the department hiring you is going to want to confirm that you're not a cross-threaded load. They're going to want to know why a person brand new to the fire service wants to jump ship. Is it that you have bigger goals, or you're a weak firefighter running from a bad reputation. I'm always skeptical of those types, particularly after meeting a few people who did that because they were such bad firefighters. Not everybody does that, but it makes senior firefighters, and even your officers wary if the first question a brand new prospective hire has is "Do I have to go through the academy again if I quit and go somewhere else?"

@@thomascassidy1 I hear ya. I work for a pretty good size department, which makes it great if you get bored in one area you can go into haz mat, go to the special operations station, go to a station with a truck company, or go where there's high rises. Heck, if you want it to be slow you can transfer to a rural station. I 'd otally understand going from a single station department to a metropolitan department. Overtime shifts alone, it's so much easier to get overtime in a department with over 1,000 firefighters than it is in a small department. One of the most important parts of going through a new academy is it breaks bad habits and gets you on the same page with your new department. I always stop in at fire stations when I travel, and one good example of a squared away department is San Francisco. Their academy is six months long, and you go through it even if you worked somewhere else first, but when you leave and start shift work, you're a firefighter, an engine driver, ladder truck driver, tiller operator, hazmat tech, qualified to ride on their fire boats, and a bunch of other stuff. They have a lot of squared away firefighters, and their training shows when you see them operate.

Looks like it could be a pool house, need to be aware of pool chemicals. I would like to see the FF cuting into the garage door with full PPE, should be on air and have gloves on. Last I would like to see a roof ladder as it would give the FF's on the roof support. Not trying to talk bad about these good FF's just want to make us all better. Love your videos.

I was watching a game show, where they talked about which profession is more dangerous.....Police Officer or Firefighter. Everyone agreed it's a Firefighter. When Firefighters get the call, they know, it won't be good. Police Officer was second and in no way, are we insulting Police Officers. Many firefighters are volunteers. I've never heard of Volunteer Police Officers.

Thank you for Un-Blocking me. Here's how you simplify this video. Just say, "Don't do anything you see here!" 1. Cutting open the garage door in a tight garage invites an instant Flashover. Always assume there is at least one 5-gallon gas can in there. 2. Roof work was completely unnecessary and usually is at 99.99% of fires. 3. The side ladder was massively long and dangerous to be used. 4. Only active firefighters in the back yard. Not enough room to work safely. Now, this is what you do. Break out the windowpanes and see how much pressure is released. If it is high pressure, open the nozzle to a tight cone of water, insert it, and wave it around to soak the entire interior. If it is not, open the door by breaking the glass, reach in and unlock the door. In this case, you go inside, open a small hole in the ceiling and soak the attic space. Then you pull the rest of the ceiling to mop up. One hose and two firefighters along with the engineer on an Engine with 500 gallons of onboard water.

Hi, question not sure if you have made a video on this before but here is a question for you. Is there a difference between the fire academy and the firefighter 1 and 2?
@sleepyjay2664
@sleepyjay2664 2 жыл бұрын
FF 1&2 are classes, while the academy is basically going back to school (or bootcamp). In addition to FF 1&2, academy will probably include courses like EVOC, DPO, EMT-B, Wildland ops, Hazmat ops, ICS, etc.

I was thinking backdraft the moment I saw them cutting into that garage door. All I could picture was punching a hole through and having it just erupt into flame. I always thought that before you cut a giant hole in the door you might smash out a small piece of a window? It just seems like a lot of firefighters and I mean you've got that low hanging wire as mentioned you got the pool right there possibility of a backdraft.. I'm not a firefighter.. but it seems to me like maybe busting out a window would have been the smarter thing to do instead of cutting a giant hole in the door? Again I'm not a firefighter. My reasoning for the window is two things number one.. it's a smaller hole number two.. much cheaper to replace them that entire garage door

Back draft conditions are the building sucking air, smoke goes out and then is sucked right back in. The smoke was not doing that.

Bingo! Fully open that window and then soak down the gasses and burning material with a tight to medium cone of water. Now that the interior is less volatile, you walk inside to mop up.

There is no way that little thing cost 965k, it's likely a garage that the owner made into a pool house. Might be worth $5,000.

Ok I’m sorry but you are making statements that are NOT correct. First off getting personnel to the roof is necessary to see if the roof structure is solid or if a fire inside has compromised the roof and may collapse. Second, by ventilating the roof if necessary allows the interior fire to seek out that opening and start to clear the interior of smoke so that the interior attack teams can have better visibility. Every fire will be different but from my 34 years in one of the most progressive fire departments and assigned to a Truck Company, and Fire Department Instructor, and your statement about the firefighter cutting the opening into the garage door with another firefighter holding a charged line, and you said you haven’t seen this to much well where do you work? That’s standard practice in teaching in Fire Academies across the Nation and is a standard safety practice. I’m sorry but you really don’t know what you are taking about!
