Small Garage Workshop Space Saving Material Storage

This project was way overdue. I had lumber and material all over my property and I needed to get it stored in my small single-garage workshop.
Space is in short supply in my workshop so I had to utilize an often overlooked area. Overhead.
Storing my lumber and material overhead allows me to utilize previously wasted space. It also allows me to clear the floor making it easier to move around in my shop.

Excellent simple build. The cut sheet storage is a great idea. I would add a vertical block on the end of the cantilevers to prevent things from falling off. A simple block with one screw that can be twisted out of the way for access might save you a head ache.

For your gutter storage maybe drill small holes in the bottom so you can blow or sweep the dust out via the holes and on to the ground before sweeping

Having less storage space just means as you fill up, you know you need to start using what you have instead of buying more ;) Great project, and LOVE the gutter idea

I suggest that you drill drain holes into the gutter for dirt and dust removal.

very clean and well done with your storage solutions, especially your ply wood off cuts. leaving the space underneath the plywood rack free was a good idea cause it lets you sift through all the pieces by picking up and placing down the ones on top without walking to a different area of the shop. some advice I can give for your roof rack, I've made bulk cantilever racks like the ones you made and something that's always made them difficult to work with is getting to the pieces at the bottom without everything falling down on me. in your case since you put it in the ceiling this makes it harder because you'll need to use a ladder/step stool to access requiring you to go up and down repeatedly to move the lumber at the top to get to the bottom/middle. for this I recommend adding more racking then necessary and leaving the new spots mostly empty so that when you're on the ladder, you can shimmy your boards from rack to rack and not have to walk down every time. of course this way still lacks in the way of safety but I'm not sure how you would fix that (maybe a project to make a safer step ladder) what I can say is putting some bungie cords in the rafters as well like with the plywood, is probably gonna save your head from injury in the near future

I'd put some corner pieces on those middle pieces on the ceiling, taken from experience they will come down on your head, beautiful job mate. :)

I’m working out of a hundred year old chicken coupe so with the odd shaped roof and limited space, this video gave me some great ideas. I don’t know why I never thought of using rain gutters, that’s a huge help. Thanks for the great videos!

A sore head makes me echo the calls for some form of securing mechanism for the overhead lumber. The day something falls (and it will), even if it doesn't land on you, it may be the distraction that costs you some fingers. Have you seen the quick release rope clamps on sailing boats? They may be useful. Aside from that, an elegant, top notch build as usual.

I've really been enjoying your recent videos, they have a very professional feel to them and are packed with good ideas. I appreciate that you aren't constantly shouting and don't add terrible stock music to the background. I'm in the process of setting up a small workshop in my carport and it is nice to follow along with someone doing the same thing. Incidentally, I just purchased the plans to your wall tool storage cabinet from a few videos back. Really looking forward to getting it on my wall and getting my tools out of boxes!

If you only intend to keep dust from gathering in the gutter you can drill some holes or can just cheap and cheese it with some foil, paper towels or even plastic sheet to serve as cover. You can even use some of your off cuts and make a thin frame. I suggest that you make it easier on yourself and consider using slide mechanisms for some of the plexiglass cover, it's less work in case of modifications, upgrades, maintenance or in case something falls in... Depending on the design 😅

Lekker man lekker, I build something similar but instead of doing half laps I gave the stud 2 ears that fit over the wall studs. The wall studs have holes drilled in them and the ears too. A dowel holds them together, and they are adjustable and I can add more studs if I need more. But currently I use the wole wall except for the thickness of that 114x38 that is my wall studs. You gave me an idea to use that as well

This is a very good storage solution I absolutely love it and will be doing something very similar... I guess you don't have earthquakes in your area, but seeing how that stuff could come down on top of your head makes me nervous. I thought you were going to go all the way across with your overhead storage which would allow you more storage, and prevent things from hitting you on your head, only thing is that you have to have a way to access them, so I don't know how that would work on second thought... but this is a great place to start thinking of it. I appreciate your videos and the idea you bring to us. Cheers! P.S. I would have never thought of the roof gutter as a storage, that is Brilliant!!!

Fantastic approach to organizing. I seriously recommend investing in a shinto saw rasp. If you've never used one, you will be so happy because it's quick, easy, and removes a large margin of error that you get with a chisel.

I could really use overhead storage, just hesitant about committing to a system, and this looks rather like what I have in mind.
