He had plans in place. Thunderfoot has a video on the Apollo 13 Incident and he includes real audio of the astronauts explaining to mission control they don’t have enough supplies to land and might not make it home and it is shocking how they sound as calm as they do. They train for months ahead of time to work out a wide range of possible work around a for failiures and reduce panic solutions. You can use that bleach or to make chloroform , or chlorine gas , for chlorination reaction on light catalyst. NaClO + 2HCl ---》 Cl2 + NaCl + H2O Of course , for this you'll have to use about 52g of HCl dilute solution , but bleach is not a problem but you'll need like 59-60g to make about 16L volume of Chlorine gas. It is worth the effort , because chlorine gas is quite expensive. I made this for myself when I wanted to synthesise "alfa-(chloromethyl)-naphtalene as a reagent for the synthesis of Naftifine.
