Small Kitchen Remodel - Tips and Tricks for Small Spaces

In this video I'm coming to you from my own kitchen to share some quick and easy tips for making the most of smaller areas during a remodel project. If you have a smaller home like my 1973 build, or you are dealing with a specific room that you want to make feel more spacious, this video will hopefully give you a couple worthwhile ideas. There is no reason not to make the most of any space, and to approach your remodel with optimism that you can turn any area into a part of your home you are excited about using on a daily basis.
A few of the things I focus on in this video include tying smaller areas together, creating more line of sight into the very corners of rooms, and utilizing lighting to brighten and open up the space.

So what do you use to prevent splatter when cooking? Is there a popup vent/splatter guard?

A superintendent that I worked with told me to put glass or high quality plexiglass especially behind the stove. I personally prefer NO grouting so I am getting a solid material for countertops and backsplash. If I do something custom over my stove I will be putting up glass or plexiglass on that part of the backsplash. Just a thought. People may not like it especially if they have a big kitchen. I have a 16x9 galley kitchen so the glass will not stand out since I will cover all of that backsplash on that wall.

Very informative video. Thank you! 😀 2-Part question- 1) There was a vent in the soffit above the cabinets over the cooktop so there must have been ductwork in that soffit. What did you do when you eliminated it along with the cabinets? 2) I have a soffit above my microwave with the venting function in it, over the range. The soffit continues to the end of the wall where it vents to the exterior. Can I eliminate the soffit? How would I vent to the exterior then? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thank you for your help! 🙏🏻

where is the hood?

Good question and something I should have discussed in the video. I do not currently have a hood installed. Although it's not a problem for me with my cooking and cleaning habits, it should generally go right above the stove top. I generally create ventilation when cooking, with a fan and two open screened doors but if I chose to add a vent again it would go back in the ceiling.

I would love if you talked about size of upper cabinets. Most common here is 12” and 15” is what I am looking to install which is custom or semi custom in my area. If there pros and cons if your experience for the different size? Also, for easy cleaning maintenance, dust and dirt, what kind of floor boards and crown is good for that issue? Also what is the lifespan a 1/2” vs 3/4” cabinet boxes. Is it worth the extra costs? I’m disabled so doing deep cleaning is something I have to hire someone. Also, what kind of fan would you recommend? I have a 1100sq ft house and my kitchen is small but is not an open floor plan. My kitchen is apx 16x9 and has no way to open up the kitchen unless I was going to do extra building to shift the load wall. That was something I didn’t have the money to do. Thank you for your time. You hit a cord right off the bat. Popcorn ceilings. I have them in my home and hate them, they are impossible to clean. However I live in a mobile home so replacement is not an option. How easy is it to "scrape" that off? Many DIY videos show wetting it, but in a mobile the dry wall is extremely thin and don't think that's an option. Thanks.

I do not recommend trying to remove popcorn ceilings without wetting them. It needs to be done slowly and gradually so the texture can absorb the moisture and then it will peel right off. If done properly, you shouldnt affect the drywall board much at all.

So how is cleaning off the dust from the items on the shelves? If you don’t use something for a while, you will have to wash it before you use it.

I am a pretty meticulous person about cleaning and I dont have a lot on the shelves so it generally is kept clean, but yes you are right that the shelves are more susceptible to dust than cabinets.

Nice job on your kitchen. A bit too wordy but good explanation. Filming the kitchen without having yourself in there was cool but when you DO put yourself in the video,,, cut with the flying hands, if you can??? Extremely distracting. So many people do that, so I'm not judging. Just offering a suggestion.
