This is a good example of when things don’t go as planned.

Good try on the first set. Sometimes they break no matter what we do. You did well with the homemade blade. The second one looks really good. Thanks for showing! 👍

Cast iron often has a different material attached to it because it can't be hardened/tempered very good. That is why cast vices have replaceable jaws. Forged vices usually do not. I would really like one of those nail removers

Thanks so much for that exclamation, that is helpful. Good luck on your tool hunt. Hope you find what you’re looking for. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Hope you have a great week.

Very cool I've never seen one of those. I'm not happy about your fail. But I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who messes up sometime. I've heard if you never make mistakes it's because you're not doing anything!
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Thank you. Yes, we all make mistakes and sometimes they’re unavoidable. I think if I would’ve had a con-caved punch, I might have been able to do that a little better. I didn’t notice that the backside of that prybar had been ground down some so the cast may have been compromised. Always great to have you share in the comments. Hope you have a great week.

Great job on the nail puller! It's unfortunate about what happened to the other one. When that happens I try to put it in the "I won't try that again" column. Have a great week and see you next time.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Thank you. What you say is sometimes the case, yet sometimes I’m thinking how could’ve done that differently to avoid the problem. Somebody suggested a large pair of Knipex. They claim there’s enough force to cause your rivet to mushroom without striking. I’ll have to look into it. Thanks for your visit and have a great week.
@ivanstiles7030Ай бұрын
Looks great. That cast is very delicate. I've broken a few tools trying to clean and tighten them up. It might be something you could braze back together.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Thanks for your kind words and encouragement. I was wondering about trying to use a MIG welder to fix it but I don’t know if it’s worth it. The backside of that pry bar had been ground down and that front edge of the cast may have been compromised. Thanks so much for helping me think it through. Come by again soon and have a great week.

I only have things break or realize it had other issues about 80% through a project. It happens. I can say I have not seen that style before. Enjoyed vid.

Isn’t that generally the case? Hope you enjoyed the video and look forward to seeing you again soon. Have a great week.

We've all been there...........Of course I was 6 last time I did anything like that.🤣😂🤣😂 Just goofing, live & learn, luckily it wasn't something you spent days & days on and then had an unfixable catastrophe.

😄😄 yes, I am very glad that I was doing two tools together and at least ended up with one good one. Come by again soon and have a great week.

I have seen upholstery shops that pull tacks with that tool
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Thanks forthat confirmation. It does seem like a tool that would easily slip under a tack that is embedded into leather or vinyl. Thanks for your visit and hope you have a great week.

I feel for you when that casting broke. I hate it when that happens.

Thank you. It can be delicate stuff. Thanks for visiting me here in the shop and hope you have a great week.

The best way I find to deal with rivets or peeling something over is knipex pliers wrench. If you grab a 10 or 12in pair it has a super high leverage ratio and mushrooms thoeos rivets slowly and carefully no shock to the cast parts.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Thank you, that’s great information. I’ll have to look into that. Come by again soon and have a great week.

Bummer about that nail puller fracturing! The other one sure looks nice though, so you got one good tool out of this project.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Yes. The tool that stayed intact is a good one. This isn’t the first time I broke a tool and probably won’t be the last. I’ve already thought of a different way to have done that. I have a really small ball peen hammer that I could’ve placed on top of the rivet, and then hammered with a larger hammer to have controlled my placement better. Maybe next time. Thanks for sharing and have a great week.

Can't you JB Weld the broken area?
@toolscouterАй бұрын
My experience with JB Weld is that, it is good for some applications, but doesn’t have very good tensile strength. I don’t think it would have held up under the force of prying. The best option that I can think of would’ve been to reattach it with a TIG welder. Even then I think it would have been a weak spot. I always enjoy the suggestions though. Have a great week.
@ihrescueАй бұрын
Nothing ventured nothing gained. I'll bet that nail puller will stay on your mind consciously until you drag it back out for round two. You may be able to save it as a nail puller by trimming remaining part with the broken part and trying again. An old style rivet tool of the size needed to pin that puller blade onto the cast frame may work safer for the cast metal. I am certainly judging from afar but I imagine those are more upholstery tack pullers than actual nail pullers so they aren't going to need much strength to resist. Its a nice classic tool and I bet you will bring it back to useful life even if it finds use opening paint cans.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
Wow, you’re kind of scary.😃😃 I have been mulling over in the back of my mind different possibilities of being able to use or fix that little tool. I don’t know if it’ll ever happen but it sounds like you and I are two of a kind. Thanks so much for your visit and hope you have a great day.

Thank you. I did consider going to a friend of mine who has a TIG welder, and do what you suggest. Maybe that will be a future video. Always great to have you visit me here in the shop. Hope you have a great week.
@wingnutsworkshopАй бұрын
Try brazing the piece back on. For the rivets, aluminum would probably work better with the cast iron.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
The aluminum rivet is a good idea. I have a friend that has a TIG welder and I thought that might be a possibility but I’m not motivated right now. Thanks so much for stopping by the shop for a visit. Hope you have a great day.

Really stinks doing all that and have something break. The patent is Nov 19, 1895. It's funny you working on these as I bought one today. The same but different (one piece cast-no wood handle) George

Wow! I’ll have to look a little closer at that date. Hope the one that you bought will serve you well. Thanks so much for sharing and have a great week.

Freaking cast iron. I was working on a Maytag washing machine engine last week and broke a fin off the cylinder. Got frustrated and broke the ear where it mounted to the block....😢😢😢😢

Don't get discouraged. That puller was not as sturdy as the first one. Maybe that is why you don't see them with spring steel.
@toolscouterАй бұрын
That’s a really good point. I don’t see very many of those around, so they may not have been the best design. It also look like it had been sanded down on the back. That might have weakened those thin areas. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and hope you have a great week.
