I moved to NC almost a year ago, i was just told I have four pecan trees yesterday, they were everywhere I didnt realize they were pecans till someone pointed it out. since yesterday Ive picked up about 8 pounds of nuts by hand. There is a ton of over grown weeds I will cut back to get access to a better harvest next year. SOOO very excited!! Pecan

Here in South Alabama, we call them Pacans for Pecan! I was always told that a Peecan was what a truck driver uses!!! Lol hope this helps if understood. Thanks for the video. I also use a Bag-a-Nut like yours for 26 trees we have. Love it other than cleaning the trash! Ha,ha but it was well worth the cost. It pays for itself if you don't mind working a little. They are around $550.00 now. Thanks again

Hi, my dad started farming with pecans 9 years ago in South Africa. He's probably got about 4000 trees in the orchards, but will have to take out some as the trees get bigger. My gramma from Georgia had a puh-can tree that my cousins would gather into a flour sack. The sack would then be tied and sewn tightly and sent by USPS to my family living in Florida. It was such a treat to shell the pecans and share some with the squirrels. Every year. Life in the 50-60s. ❤

Central Virginia, I call them “pee’ cans” bc that’s what my granddad from southern Alabama called them. He’d bring us paper grocery bags full of them. Kept us busy & out of trouble 😊. I found a bunch about 5 years after he died. Great memories ❤

I have a small yard but there are 9 black walnut trees here. They dont bear regularly but always a few nuts on each tree but every few years when mother nature determines they are loaded. If one hits you on the head you know it,.. They are one sob to crack nearly impossible to get a whole nut but can get halves sometimes and quarters often. I really love the stately trees and always put up a bucket full for winter use. Squirrels will take over your property when the nuts fall in fact they will harvest them and then gather them, its amazing

I wish I could, it would definitely improve yield. I don’t have a air blast sprayer. My trees get scab regularly. The only thing i do is trim limbs yearly and fertilize with granular fertilizer. I believe it has zinc in it

I have a couple of small pecan trees. The largest pecan tree is 6 years old and a Cherokee variety and I also have a couple of Western Schley varieties. I don't have the necessary land area to grow more than 1 pecan tree and so will probably prune back the Western Schley tree. Currently there are a couple of dozen small nutlets just forming on the Cherokee tree. They won't be ready until April or May next year. The Cherokee pecan produced 4 nuts last year and not having tried fresh pecans very often they were great. I live in Perth, Australia and have 2 macadamia nut trees and they produce good nuts, especially roasted, but I do prefer fresh pecans. Because where I live the rainfall isn't great, but I do have a small water tank 2800 Litres, so I have to water the tree particularly during the summer months. I just hope the nuts don't prematurely fall from the tree. I noticed you have a Stuart pecan tree, that is a type 2 protogynous variety, I'm guessing you still get thousands of nuts from your trees. I noticed a pecan grower in Missouri grows seedling pecans and he says they are a better flavour than paper shell improved varieties. Do you notice if the flavour is better with your smaller seedling pecans. A couple of years ago I visited a small farm pecan grower in South Australia and he let me try a Wichita variety pecan. I don't know if it was stale, but it wasn't good. This guy actually won an award one year from the Australian pecan growers association for his Wichita variety. Normally the Wichita, type 2 is a protogynous variety and a pollinator for the Western Schley. I don't know if you will reply, but I'm impressed with your 100 year old pecan trees. where I live birds can be a real problem cleaning out nut trees, with the Australian raven (similar to a crow) going for the nuts.

Yes! The smaller pecans taste much better. I have a problem with black crows eating pecans but We are to kill them once crow season comes in mid November. Good luck with your trees! I estimate I harvest 300-350lbs per tree on a good crop like this year. My trees were planted in 1910.

@@oldriversfarm1609 you can kill crows in most states out of season if they’re destroying your crop. We can’t even hunt crows in Texas unless they’re damaging crops. I’d contact your local Game Wardens. I’d go out of business if I couldn’t fight off the crows. They’re horrible here. I walk my orchard every morning to let them know I’m around and they fear me. I own a 97 pecan tree orchard plus other fruit trees. Stuart and Mount are my 2 worst varieties. I don’t even gather those 2. My 2 Stuart’s where supposed to be Desirables and they were mislabeled. I knew not to buy Stuart’s. Out of the 3 Desirables I bought 1 was a Desirable. I had the leading pecan breeder who breeds most of the current varieties in College Station Tx. identify them. He said I got screwed because they were Stuart’s. He doesn’t like Stuart’s either. I have over 20 varieties.

We have 7, 30 year old pecans and lots of younger ones here in mid Missouri. Kanza, Kiowa, Peroque, Posey, natives, and Tracey (Lucas x creek) Nothing as big as what you grow. We haven't yet bought a bag a nut, but it looks pretty useful. I like to go around the tree with the lawn mower and nearly scalp the ground and blow all the trash away when it gets near harvest time. How do you sort through all your tarped piles?

Sounds like webworms. I was told by the extension agent in south Georgia that if you poke holes in the web with a stick, their predators will go in and eat them. :-)

how well does the picker work in high grass? i got 2 trees that are about 85 years old in SE pennsylvania, smaller nuts, they might be a hican variety to be cold hardy

My Hican tree produces Hicans that are twice as big as English walnuts. It looks like 2 English walnuts stacked on top of each other. People are amazed when I show them. I have 97 pecan trees and my Hican tree is the prettiest tree I have. Bigger leaves, darker green leaves, thicker canopy and the twigs are much thicker. The nuts are useless. They don’t fill out. I live in hot dry Texas and in sand and rock. Horrible conditions for pecans. If it was planted along a creek it would probably fill the nuts much better.

I lived in Florence for about seven years. We had two huge pecan trees in our front yard. I never really ate pecans until I moved south. Then, that first fall ! Wow, fresh pecans are simply delicious. We would fill 5 gallon buckets from those trees and take them to family and friends in WV. I miss those trees, as we have moved away long ago. They were so majestic too.

looking at purchasing a house with 14 acres and 300 pecan trees. been researching on ways to harvest that are not as costly as a mechanical tree shaker.

@@Ddrew662 honestly for 20-25k you can get setup for 300 trees. I can usually make about 200$ a tree so it’s worth it for 300 trees. 5 of 7 of my trees got destroyed by hurricane Helene as well as a very large Portion of Georgia and floridas pecans acreage. Prices might be at all time highs the next 10-15 years while new trees are brought back into production. UNLESS trump gets into office and puts large tariffs on China because China buys close to 85% of USA production.

@@Ddrew662 where are you located? I usually make 200lbs a tree on a good year. Last years price was .95$ per lb. Most of my crop I have cracked for customers and charge 2-2.50$lb with a cost of .25$lb to crack. So sometimes make over 200$ a tree but sometimes I just take them to town to sell.

You need to buy grafted trees adapted to your area. Makes a huge difference on the varieties for your area because some do better in dry areas because they’ll get scab disease if it’s too wet, others do better in wet climates and others that ripen before it freezes if your in the northern region. They won’t produce if your too far north. You need to research your states recommendations for varieties. I have 97 trees in Texas.

@@permatopiafarm1119 you’d have to go with the early ripening varieties and also scab resistant varieties in your location so that’s going to cut down on your available choices. I’d think Pawnee, Kanza, Lakota, Mandan, Caddo and Peruque. You’ll need a type 1 variety (male)and type 2 (female)variety to pollinate each other if you don’t have other pecan trees around your area which is very important if your only getting 2 trees. Wind pollinates them. Where I live, I can grow many varieties. As you move north it knocks your choices out plus your in a wetter location (scab resistant varieties). I’d research Oklahomas recommendations also since your in the same latitude but you’ll need scab resistance. Highway I-35 is the dividing line they use to determine wet and dry areas. Your on the east side and therefore need scab resistance. Georgia has a huge scab problem because they get so much rain. I’m right next to 1-35 and can grow pretty much anything. Hwy I-40 is the dividing line they use for cold hardy varieties. I don’t know where your located north and south of there. extension.okstate.edu/fact-sheets/pecan-varieties-for-oklahoma.html I’d research this also. It’s a crazy website the way it’s set up. You have to spin the pages up and down with your fingers to see everything. There’s 3 separate boxes you spin and it tells about each variety in the 3 separate boxes. Look for the smaller number of nuts per pound (bigger) and higher kernel percentage when you choose also. High kernel percentage equates to higher quality nuts. Womack Nursery is where I’ve ordered some trees. 95% of mine I planted from nut and grafted myself. I graft every year. Grafting my small trees and also the tops of my bigger trees changing the older variety to newer and better varieties. I’ve got to get outside and gather pecans all day right now and get off this phone. Pecans take years to produce so factor that in your choices also. Some come into production earlier in age than others. I was young (early 20s) when I started planting my orchard. Now I’m 60. I have a aunt that lives in the northeast corner of Arkansas. aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/fruit-nut/files/2010/10/viewpdf_3111_21293.pdf here’s a good website also. You’d have to choose the eastern varieties on that Texas map. Plus you have to choose early ripening varieties or they’ll freeze in the shuck where you live. UGA also has a lot pecan info for scab resistant varieties. They’re the pecan capital and scab is horrible there.
