When Irwin (David Cross) and Larry (Jay Mohr) pitch Mars (Denis Leary) their new toy lines, he decides to make them into real, functioning toy soldiers that can walk and talk.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Joe Dante directed this satirical action-comedy about talking tech toys accidentally juiced-up with military microchips. After the defense industry firm Globotech takes over a small toy company, Heartland Play Systems' CEO Gil Mars (Denis Leary) gives the green light to develop a new line of action figures, requesting an upgrade to more realistic figures from Heartland toy designers Larry Benson (Jay Mohr) and fumbling Irwin Wayfair (David Cross). Mars wants toys that act like the ones in TV commercials. The results are fierce fighting figures, the Commando Elite, programmed to seek out and destroy the kindly alien-like Gorgonites. In an effort to make the toys as natural as possible, Benson inserts Globotech's most powerful military computer chips. Meanwhile, in quiet Winslow Corners, Ohio, toy-store owner Stuart Abernathy (Kevin Dunn) and his 15-year-old son Alan (Gregory Smith) are stuck in a failing business, so when Heartland truckdriver Joe (Dick Miller) stops by with the Commando and Gorgonite toys, Alan is convinced they will be hot sellers, commenting, "Maybe this store will finally make a little money." With blistering blows to their blister packs, the Commandos burst out, receive orders from their leader Chip Hazard (voice of Tommy Lee Jones) and ready for an all-out assault on the Gorgonites. When the Gorgonite leader Archer (voice of Frank Langella) begins communicating with Alan, it causes the Commandos to perceive humans as another enemy, simply by their association with the "Gorgonite scum," so an attack on the Abernathy house begins. Unfortunately, the Gorgonites can offer only limited assistance, since they have been programmed to lose. The film combines animatronics, puppetry, and computer animation. The Commando Elite voices include surviving actors from Robert Aldrich's The Dirty Dozen (1967), while the Gorgonite voices reunited several This Is Spinal Tap (1983) cast members. A dedication to Phil Hartman (the voice of Phil Fimple) after the closing credits features a brief Hartman outtake.

I've only noticed recently how Erwin doesn't question the alteration of his Gorgonites idea from educational alien creatures to cannon fodder for the Commando Elite, but instead whether pitting the toy lines together will become too violent for kids. He shows that he prioritizes kids' safety and being a team player willing to edit ideas (like turning the Gorgonites from education to cannon fodder) over his original intent with the Gorgonites. Nice little screenwriting touch.

I'm saying Mars is the real bad guy behind this movie cuz if he hadn't suggest the idea of having commandos and gorgonites as enemies instead of having their own worlds where they can be heroes instead of rivals. It would have put themselves into Jeopardy and and create Carnage in the neighborhood just like Chucky did. As far as I can see the commandos were heroes cuz they served and protect for justice While the gorgonites are also heroes cuz they want peace and harmony and sanctuary.

I think that was the whole point and we did see "3 Months" development leading to Gorgonites still retaining their original ideas of diplomats. Even without malfunction, entire product line would be down the toilet. Kids would be smart enough to know the tonal differences. I know 40k is different context (being miniature targeted towards adults), but they do have Orks, Necrons, Chaos, Dark Eldar, and Tyranids being malevolent (Though the "good guys" like Imperium and Eldar being shown as dark so that the "bad guys" can be marketable as well since only oppressed downtrodden Imperium's citizens would join Chaos once they get a chance).

I don't begrudge Leary for what he said here. I'm sure he would have entertained Erwins idea for the Gorganites but he's only speaking business. And Facts. The business end of things, kids just want to have fun with their toys. Not be educated by them. You have to appeal to that symplistic aspect to them. And sure, maybe down the road when they make lore for the toy line, they could implement his idea. Retconned it even. Erwin had to be patient and wait for the money flow then adjust product. Or quit with a bag full of money to start his own company and realize his dream. But I'm speaking on what could have been.
