Hey guys! It's DayVeeJay again, back with another classic PS1 review and retrospective. This time we're looking at the video game tie-in to Dreamworks' 1998 action comedy Small Soldiers, and while the film is often looked at as the poor man's Toy Story, it still has a loyal and dedicated fanbase, but how does the game hold up today? So it's been pointed out that the game does in fact have music that plays during the missions, and after looking into it, it turns out, yes, this is true. The ROM I downloaded has multiple files in it and the one I ran to make the video for some reason has no music outside of the cutscenes and main menu, but I've just tried another one and yeah, it's got music, so I've got no idea what's up with that. So yeah, I take back what I said about the game having no soundtrack, this was an error on my part. I did have a quick listen to the music and it's pretty good although that isn't much of a surprise given it was done by Michael Giacchino, he's produced a lot of great soundtracks over the years, but I still like the idea of playing the game in silence. As I said, I think it helps create a gritty and eerie atmosphere. Thank you very much to those who pointed out this error. I'm sure it won't be the last time. 😅

Sick video, love a bit of ps1 nostalgia. One thing though--are you sure you didn't accidentally turn music off in the settings? The single most memorable thing about this game to me is the incredible soundtrack. It's some of Michael Giacchino's earliest work, and he went on to be a bit of a big deal to say the least if you check his discography. Good luck with the channel (:

Nope, I just went back and checked, no music options other than volume, so I'm not sure, maybe you're thinking of something else, unless there's another version of the game with more music. Yeah, I know MIchael Giacchino. I like some of his later stuff like Medal of Honor and Lost. Thanks for commenting! 🙂

@@DayVeeJay93 Weird, the game definitely has music; the full OST is on KZbin, and there's a longplay that shows gameplay with the music playing in the background. Maybe it's a dodgy emulation/rip you were playing?

Toy Soldiers has essentially the same plot as Toy Story? That's a wild take, man. You did a good job with this one, I look forward to trawling through all your other vids.

The scene in the film where Phil Hartman (rip) refers to the Gorgonites as "the gorgonzolas" is probs the funniest line for no reason lol. Played the game in elementary school and was a bit creeped out for some reason. Also couldn't beat the damn second level. Mind you, I was like...seven?

I always liked the bit where Kirsten Dunst's boyfriend is being attacked by the gwendies and Chip Hazard says "an officer and a gentleman does not strike a lady", and then sets him on fire haha. You got further than me. I don't think I even bothered with the single player, I just remember me and my cousin playing the multiplayer a lot. Thanks for commenting!
