Hi there. Great videos thanks. Excuse the newbie question - with a 6' rod set up for very small ponds, casting no more than say 15', how long should the leader be? Thanks

Hi, I tend to use furled leaders of about 9 foot, it gives a bit of weight to cast with in tight space. Thanks for watching

Haha. I wouldn’t blame you for doing that, skip the crap for the good bits. I do it too! Thanks for watching

Bloody hell, I’ll never take being able to fish in New Zealand for granted again. But good on you for getting out on the river. Brilliant that you cleared it up, too. Amazing effort. Top bloke!

There are more remote rivers but you can’t go far without seeing other people, or worse, what they’ve left behind. Thanks for watching

Great video. I'm a new subscriber and just getting into fly fishing. Whizzed through a fair few of your videos and appreciate all the tips. I wonder if you could give any advice on beats on Mid Devon small streams such as in this video?

Hi Sebastian. Thanks for watching. I mainly do fly fishing on the little local stream, the River Exe and Dartmoor. I’d happily give you any advice I can but I’m no expert.

Morning, I'm looking at having a trip down to the river x .for a mid week break ,I'll be camping and hopefully a bit of fly fishing. Can you point me in the right direction for permits.

There is a “fish the exe” scheme for some stretches, if you Google that it should help you

great video as ever, just think of the state rivers would be in without fishermen and women , good job. As you know am not really into fly fishing but just love your channel and where you fish in devon.ive had carp to over 54lb , barbel to 15lb , perch to nearly 4lb but my fav fish ever was spinning in a tiny river in southern ireland in the middle of no where and catching a wild brown trout of about 4 oz, as we all say size isnt everything. he he.

Thanks Ian. I love the variety of the river, it changes so much with weather and the light. Thanks for watching as always 👍

fish rising today yeahhhhhh, was going up coast but traffic bad so went river.....peace lol, when you fish the exe what length leader and tippet do you find best ?
@WestCountryAngler3 жыл бұрын
I was thinking today how perfect the weather is. I use a 9ft leader and about a 2ft tippet.

Not much happening up here in Yorkshire. Rivers are really low and the fish are hugging the bottom. No rising trout yet up here.

Thanks for watching Peter. I’ve managed to get a few rising for a dry fly yesterday but nothing was rising for naturals apart from Grayling

hi Paul, whats the fishing like in Devon now, its crap in wales rivers so low and frost at night so water very cold and fish not moving , going to use rods for bean sticks soon haaaa
@WestCountryAngler3 жыл бұрын
It’s tough here too, the trout are staying in the deeper pools and staying low. I’ve tempted the odd one to rise for a dry fly but they just aren’t in the faster runs where I’d expect to find them at this time of the year.

well done, I went to river today and it was so low, water so clear and very cold there was no chance but I did catch a tree , sadly it would need a tractor to clear the beat where I fish but just wait a bit and it will get warmer.

I haven’t tried since the weekend, this cold wind is keeping the trout down on the Exe. Thanks for continuing to watch, I appreciate it.

Nice video nice trout to I have a question for you if you're ok to answer it do you know anything about snowbee fly rods as I'm thinking about getting one of their combos.
@WestCountryAngler3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee. I’ve never used snowbee but I know it’s a brand that’s well respected. My opinion is that all lower cost rods, such as the Shakespeare rod I own, are all the same and made in the same factory. It’s only when we spend hundreds that the rods become more individual. But it’s an opinion of an amateur 😀

Good rods , owned a little 7ft snowbee classic rod and loved it for small pokey areas .

hi Paul, for the benefit of others........in one of your earlier vids you said you don't try to match the hatch , lot to be said for that and I have to agree that a simple brown elk hair or a black gnat according to whats about generally does the trick, keep the vids coming they're great
@WestCountryAngler3 жыл бұрын
I went this evening and no trout were rising for naturals but I managed to get four rising to an elk hair caddis. Thanks for watching Michael 👍

Loved the video - looks like a lovely spot! Are you still using the furled leader or is your tippet coming straight off the line?
@WestCountryAngler3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lewis, I’m still using the furled leader, it makes my presentation with the 6ft rod much easier. Thanks for watching
