Love the videos. The hickory tree you love you need to do some major pruning this winter while it is dormant. I’m an arborist/ forester. It seems to have 2 trunks, pick the one you like the most that has the least number of V shaped forks in it and remove the other one as low down on the trunk as you can. You will encourage growth solely on the best side of the tree then going forward. You keep helping with the bees i help with the trees!

I keep a lemongrass plant in one of my side gardens. Lemongrass has a compound that mimics bee nesting pheromone, and it's what those attractant products are made out of. I crunch a few leaves up and rub down the interior walls of my box before grabbing or trying to attract a swarm. I don't know if it's less or more effective than the Swarm Commander stuff, but it seems to work great. You can pick up stalks of Lemongrass in your local Asian market; pop a few in the ground and keep them watered and they'll take root pretty easily. They make a nice tea too.

@cluelessbeekeeping13224 жыл бұрын
Would you like to see a ton of bees? Put out some sugar in a small bowl. Keep it wet like wet sand (no wetter or they will drown). They will eventually find it (place it right up next to a window so you can view them from the inside of your house). If you want them to find it quicker, add a drop of lemongrass oil to the sugar. Also, if you want help the bees, place some water for them (this applies if there are not many water sources around). You'll see hundreds of bees on your sugar bowl. Try it, it's worth a bowl of sugar!

David stories are always good to hear. I recall hearing, not so much a story :-) as bee-gossip, that less is better than more in that a heavy spray will act more like a repellent. Is this the case, it doesn't seem far fetched to me?

David, I lost a swarm the other day because I didn't use my lure. They were all wrapped around the trunk and eventually just took off. I was afraid to use the lure thinking they'd ball my queen in the swarm because they would think they had a queen in the box. Is even the queen attracted to the lure?

Dave, I have an unrelated question, or perhaps someone else can help. I split a hive, the donor hive had a heavy, fully capped frame in the brood chamber. That frame was one of four black plastic frames that came with the original nuc in April. I went to check on the hive and when going through it the capped black frame was completely empty, except for some light work towards the top. No comb at all on 75 percent of it---like it was brand new. Do bees pick frames clean? I'm very confused.

Yes sounds like the weaker colony got robbed out. Next time put a very small reducer on it.

When on bees sting you that smells something like acetone, and attracting other bees to sting too. That little swarm looks like the third one, and usually they have some more queens in it. Instead to push them by fingers, did you try to use peppermint oil mixed with water, or just smoker?

If I had been mauling my bees just like that I would have been stung 65 times not just 4. I can stand in their flight path and the ones bringing in nectar and pollen, (my pollen has now changed to white I don't know what that is), will bounce of my head over and over not stinging.

Excuse me , I am 12 and I am scared of bees, when I see a bee, I run but if it is close to me or on me , I move slowly , How can I overcome this and how can I overcome the buzzing because the buzzing is what gets me the most
@phillower88064 жыл бұрын
Really man when bees coming around you just be completely docile. If they don’t see you as a threat you want be in trouble. Let’s say a bee lands on your shirt don’t shake it off aggressively, just wait 5 seconds until it flies away or walk away slowly and it will fly off. Don’t seat at them, just play it cool.

It IS the sound that is scary. Just put your fingers in your ears and walk away slowly. There use to be a hive of bees blocking the entrance to my club house I learned if I can't hear them then they are not scary. I just plugged my ears and walked through a cloud of bees, they are not interested in us they are busy doing their jobs.
