I love the rough-hewn look of the wood! Those things could sell, Richard.

I learned a little more about the growth rings and the way the wood is cut with this little project. Thanks for watching Santee!

I used a technique just like the one you are to antique wood. This might sound crazy but i used a torch to blacken the wood Before i put stain on. Worked great.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview2 жыл бұрын
I was seriously considering doing that. I should have stained it with my walnut dye, just like I did the wall bracket I made. Thanks for watching!

I have an old H&R model 930 22lr revolver that I bought new in 1979. It's a 4 inch barrel, 9 shot, nickel plated model. It came with black plastic grips. Over the years they cracked and chipped. A good friend of mine made a set of wood grips for it a few years ago. He used 110 year old wood from a barn in Kentucky. They are just beautiful ! He also buffed the nickel finish out for me. I couldn't believe it was the same revolver when he brought it back to me.

@@SmallCaliberArmsReviewits generally pretty hard, shaping on bench mounted grinder to get the shape close, smooth the surface using different shape carbide bits. A dremel tool doesn't turn that fast but with time might work. Faster the tool spins the easier, my air powered one turned 85k rpm. Sand and polish, they look great 👍
@SmallCaliberArmsReview Жыл бұрын
I've been wanting to get one of the high speed mini grinders to do some detail work, but I'd also like to try it with the tools they used 150 years ago too.

Very nice.. I always enjoy making grips. Much easier then people think.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview2 жыл бұрын
Just takes a little time. It can also be somewhat relaxing.
@snappers_antique_firearms2 жыл бұрын
@@SmallCaliberArmsReview agreed!! i use mostly metal files when i make grips. They work great on wood. I just find filing extremely relaxing..... A recommendation to make replica ubertis and piettas feel much more like a colt. On Replicas there grip frame is a different shape then original colts. I personally find the original colt shape much more comfortable. There are inexpensive replacement rubber grips you can buy. Just make sure there for first gens colts. All colt gens are a little different in shape and size. These replacement grips fit my original colt with almost no fitting. Use these grips as a guide to reshape the uberti or pietta grip frame. Makes the replica feel much more like a real colt. Then make a set of custom grips. Hardest part is reblueing the grip frame. Its a lot of work but worth it.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview2 жыл бұрын
@@snappers_antique_firearms I was considering shaping the grips on the frame to get an exact fit but I didn't want to do the reblueing, maybe on another project.

WoW! I'm impressed! I just finished watching your Taurus revolver video and this was next in the lineup of videos. I caught the thumb nail pic and title and I thought..., Oh what the hell, I already like his other videos, let's watch this over another cup of coffee. I'm glad I did too. I'm never going to make my own grips but this video was soo interesting to watch that now I feel I could at least try just for the fun of it. Really like your other videos and reviews because you're such a down to earth kinda guy. It's like I'm in your shop hanging out with you. Great videos too. Thanks for sharing 👍🤠

Most of the things I do, started out as just trying it. The way to find out if you can do something or would enjoy doing something is to at least try doing it. Thank you very much for the incredibly kind comment, that's the stuff that makes my day!

The template technique looks like a good way . I might try that on my knife making for scales. Tiger stripe maple or cherry stump root would look good too . Your grips turned out good , I’ve seen some pretty dark grain in hickory axe handles, bet that would look good too .

Can you demonstrate how to make an extended grip ~1/4" for a Diamondback (sidekick) 22 revolver.
@SmallCaliberArmsReview Жыл бұрын
I don't have a Sidekick, so I'm not sure how they're grips are made and I've also never tried to make extended grips. I would imagine when you trace out the grip frame on the wood, you could just sketch the back line 1/4" further out. That would probably leave a gap where the frame actually sits though. If you made the grips just a little thicker (wider), would take up some of the distance you're wanting?
