SmallRig Vlog Case for GoPro Hero 8 Black

SmallRig does it again! They produce so many great products for camera and video shooters. I have been using their gear for a couple years, and for the most part, their stuff is well designed and very affordable. I do find they often use screws and bolts that are very small, which provided limited "grip" surface, and have come loose in a few situations. Otherwise, I find their stuff very reliable and I continue to be impressed with the range of kit they offer.

Starting to dig myself into the rabbit hole. Already got 3 batteries with the dual battery charger, accessory pack, waterproof case, and an audio adapter specifically for recording intercom and ATC communications when I fly and a barrel mount for paintballing.

Excellent review and thank you. know how long the Ulanzi charger takes to charge or how to tell when its fully charged? I purchase this entire set up for vlog days for my channel and the cage is top quality and I've had many others. Just be careful with the microphone adapter when making the connection as you can damage the port on the GP or the adapter if your hard on them.

I just picked up this cage for my new Hero 8 Black. I'm not a fan of the angle that the microphone adapter cord goes into the port. Have you had any issues with tension placed on the USB-C port by the way the cord has to hook in? I don't want this thing ruining my new GoPro. Those USB ports are finicky.

I'm running Hero 8 and this cage looks better than the media mod since it provides lens protection too. I also like how the mic adapter gets hooked on with this cage. Not impressed with the media mod sound reviews. Who is using this Rode Micro mic and are you happy with it? What is the effective range between person and camera?

I just bought a GoPro 8, but I don't see many advantages of using an action camera for vloging rather than using a cellphone. Are there any major advantages other than the microphone and handle? I enjoy watching your videos! Thanks.

I have that power grip handle on my vlogging rig. The first one I bought worked great with my first Hero 8, and would keep the battery level topped off at 100% all the time, though it only would charge while the GoPro wasn't recording which is how it works. However I just bought a new Hero 8 and power grip handle, and I've noticed that my battery level slowly drops while I have the charger plugged in. I think it is adding some charge, but it definitely doesn't seem like it's able to keep up with it while it's on. Any ideas about this? I tried plugging in another battery pack to the hero8 and it seemed to do the same thing, so I was wondering if perhaps there was some firmeware update that changed things on the hero8?

A little question, can I use this *with* the stock door as well? This little doodad looks really nice for attaching to my handle and light for when I go swimming but without that door, the gopro isn't watertight...

Now my question... The SmallRig GoPro HERO9 Black Cage 3083 why is it cheaper and isn't better to have mic mount under the cage? (So it less protruding) love to hear your feedback! Good job with the video

I haven’t use the small rig one myself, but yes indeed depending on your field of you having a microphone on the top like that could potentially be in the video. Ideally at the side or as mentioned at the bottom it’s less likely to be in your field of view

@air photography - I am wondering what are your thoughts on using this case mounted on a bicycle? How snug is the fit when using the original gopro battery door? I have looked at other brands which they do not have the red latch to release and lock the door, they use a small ballbearing or a magnet, which i think will be useless for the shaking while riding. The positive of other brands is that they have a screw that presses on a plate to make the camera fit tightly. I welcome any recommendations even from other brands. I just want a case that is permanently attacked to my bicycle, slide the camera in and out without fuzz everytime i park my bike. Thanks! Great video!

does it cover the microphone holes? I want this but I'm worried it'll hurt the audio if not using an external mic. Ideally I want to adhere mini deadcat wind muffs around it with super glue.

The media mod arrives at my house on Monday. These setups are no good for the black now. That is if the media mod sounds good. New setups have to be made with the media mod in mine. We will see how it sounds when do some testing with it.

Mine arrives on Monday as well. Hopefully the built-in microphone is decent. Set ups like this still have Their place as it’s more customizable and durable since it is made of aluminum

With the GoPro stock down so bad he really should have released all the mods instead of waiting so long. The screen is not released until March. I was like really. Some have said apple should buy the company. If this does not boost gopro stock this might be the end of them.

I'm not familiar with that Ulanzi powerbank, but I've used my GP8 recording 3-4 hours non-stop with a 12800 / 47Wh USB-C power bank from ANKR.

I have this case, and it does not seem to block any audio when I use it on my GoPro Hero 8 without any external mic. So to answer your question, in my experience the answer is no.

Kim Jong Un No. Small Gage makes one for the Hero 7. They are different camera sizes, so different cage / frame sizes.

Nice - I wasn't aware of this one. I think I like this better than the GoPro Media Mod because I don't understand how ND filters will work with the Media Mod and no one seems to be talking about that. But I also already have a 52MM Variable ND filter so this seems to be all I really need. I can use my Litra Torch, external mic AND have ND filters.

I do hope so just so all the accessories especially the mods Will still work. The only slight difference I hope they change is make the lens replaceable. Usually when GoPro releases a new design they stick with it for several generations. So I think we should be OK

I’d like to get one of those, but my concern is GoPro says their display mod only work with the media mod, which then wouldn’t work for this, so I don’t know 🤷‍♂️

I bought one after watching his review of it about a month and a half ago. It's honestly an amazing and sleek little case, but your concern of it not working with the display mod is very real. It's my biggest concern and the only flaw in the case (imo). I'm hoping they create a 3rd party hdmi inlet that allows us to connect the display mod to our gopro still but who knows if that will happen. If you're dead set on getting the display mod, then I'd say hold off on this case for now. Worst case scenario for myself is that I just don't use the display mod despite it being one of the main reasons I bought a Hero 8 haha.

CJ Abroad Gamz I got one recently from the GoPro website. There was 2 day shipping and it worked with my hero 8 despite it not saying that it does on the box. So far extremely happy with it, but I’m considering the media mod.
