SmallRig x Desview Teleprompter for Small DSLR/Mirrorless Cameras - Review.

Sometimes, when recording a video, you might just sit in front of the camera with a vague idea of what you want to talk about. This is often my style, I like to just talk about something because it's a natural presentation style for me. However, this can lead to missed information that I don't realize I missed until the edit, inaccuracies (specs), and longer than necessary record times with very large video files. It's not an efficient way to record a KZbin video.
That's where a teleprompter can be very useful. If I first write out a script for my video, it allows me to make all the relevant points I want to convey to the viewer while doing so in as little time as necessary. Succinct and to the point is a good formula for retention on KZbin and as a viewer I appreciate the approach.
But because you don't necessarily want to be reading a script cause it sound robotic and can take your eyes away from the camera, it's best to write in the same style you speak. Read your script out loud, does it sound like you are speaking or reading? Also, a teleprompter will keep you looking at the audience which is a better experience for the viewer. For me, I often have an outline and even in this case, it could be helpful to see that when looking at the camera without the need to look away while also keeping you on subject.
The SmallRig / Desview teleprompter was a fit for what I needed in that it's small, light and easy to setup. The lens attaches to the teleprompter itself so you don't need to cover any gaps where light could get in and you don't need extra gear to support the added weight. I also really liked that the teleprompter didn't get in the way of my monitor so my process for recording a video didn't have to change, it just fit right into my current setup.

Hey can you shoot in both vertical and horizontal position by way of turning the camera or the phone horizonal or vertical?

I haven't tried it but I imagine you can just turn the camera sideways and the teleprompter can stay as is cause it spins. You'll nee a tripod with a mount that will hold you cam sideways which is often a cage you put on the camera

Is the text legible with the phone app? I noticed it was bigger with the tablet. Or did it just cover more of the text? This was an excellent review/description/tutorial.

Great review. I trust Smallrig which had me really interested in this promoter. Bur as far as I can tell, it’s just being sold by Smallrig as a reseller, but they had nothing to do with manufacturing. It appears to be the exact same model as the version being sold without the Smallrig sticker on top.

You're probably right although it has the feel of what I would expect from a SR product and if they are going to stick their name on it then they are putting their reputation on the line if it's junk. Hi Ray! I bought this teleprompter, but only works well with my Canon KIT lens (EFS 18-55m). I have two prime lens (EF 50mm and EFS 24mm) and both have focusing issues when used with this teleprompter. The autos focus is not working, maybe because there is not enough power to move the focus. I don't know why the KIT lens is working. Do you have any idea?

Hmm not sure. Putting the ring on the thread shouldn't stop AF from working. I guess the glass could be causing the other lenses to have a hard time perhaps. Make sure there is a clear view through the glass (no reflections, dirt, fingerprints etc). Also try it with the ring on but not looking through the glass. Same issue, then maybe it's the ring, if there is no issue that way then you have a better idea that it's the glass or other.

@@randomguy9802 Good question, it doesn't look like much if anything but I haven't tried the T3. Looks like maybe SmallRig maybe just partnered as a reseller, not sure if they changed anything or just lent their name.

Do the screw-on rings mean you can't use ND filters while using this teleprompter?

Yes you can. put your ND filter on, and screw the smallrig adapter onto the nd filter.

Can it used to shoot vertically?

The lens just goes through a whole in the back so you could just set your cam up vertically instead of horizontal like you see here. Haven't tried it but doesn't seem like it should be an issue.

The problem is that I can't read the text. It's too dim. And I can't adjust the angle of the prompter to fix the problem. I"m returning it.

You have to have 20/20 vision to read then small fonts. If you have to go get one that enlarges and bigger for easy of reading. The very reason why after a teleprompter anyway. Bigger fonts bigger display easier to read.
