Yesterday I was given a 1995 Mercury 2.5 litre XRi, EFI, 150 Blackmax. Guy says it’s “blown up”. Brought it home, took off the heads and found #2 piston top starting to disintegrate. Slightly Aluminum scored cylinder. Gonna use little muriatic to clean that up. All cylinders still show some crosshatching. Using your sources mentioned for parts and upgrades. Will “kinda” follow your steps, disassemble, remove scoring, measure and hone, clean, reassemble, delete oil injection system mistake and test. 👍 Your videos are easy to watch and have some good information. Thx for sharing. 😎

How did you project go? I am considering this myself on a 150 xr2. Just lost compression on cylinder 3 and 4 at WOT.
@ProudAmerican1962 Жыл бұрын
@@lancelyons9012 I have it all apart, cleaned up, measured and stacked on the “to be finished after tax season” shelf. A lot of “life” things have taken priority so that’s as far as I’ve gone. I did order the composite reeds kit, delete oil injection kit and a packer kit. I took about 50 photos from when I started and all along thru the disassembly for rebuild reference. Found a bad voltage regulator and what appears to be a bad thermostat. It looks intimidating at first but take your time and document bolts etc in individual baggies. Happy New Year!

I make a 1 inch wide strip of 1/8 in sheet rubber and wrap around rod journal to protect from piston rod hit during piston installation.Saves a crank from accidental rod hit.

Great videos. The plastic shavings you found during tear down lead you to the plastic oil gear on the crank as root cause for the gunk build up and low compression. Does Merc offer a replacement part for the oil gear that is not plastic? Replacing that gear would be a bit tricky since the crank assembly would have to be torn down, certainly involved. Is there is a fix to the root cause? If not it seems that you really have to stay on top of your engine and catch these types of failures before it becomes a real problem.

You mentioned a plastic oil gear drive in part 1. What became of that?
@SmalltownBassin2 жыл бұрын
Deleted the oil injection. The pinion gear on the pump shredded the threads off the plastic drive gear on the crank. Was able to clean it up and reuse the crank in the rebuild. Part 3 of this build is on the channel where I finally install it for a warm up cycle. New owner is loving that powerhead!

Dude , that was so unsatisfying ! I was watching for the moment you fired it up for the first time !! I rebuilt an Evinrude 115hp some years back having zero experience in rebuilding engines, and the feeling when that thing fired right up after a couple of turns of the key was amazing !! Still good vids, though.

I have the same engine that I'm having to re-sleeve one cylinder, one new piston and all new rings. The oil gear also caused my issues. My question is, if I'm doing an oil delete is there any reason to leave or replace the oil gear? Will it cause any issues if it's not there?

That's a tech manual. Only way to get one that I know of is through a licensed merc dealer. Or.....just read it for free on hodges.uk website.

ive been doing that loctite red on the rod screws lately. had one walk out on me over the summer and trashed a perfectly good 3cyl block (not a motor I built... a customers when testing). I also loctite the gearcase seals to make sure they dont run away. heavy offshore stuff tends to do that. I will say that one piston didn't look too healthy... must've felt better than it looked. cheers.
@SmalltownBassin2 жыл бұрын
A little loctite is good insurance for anything. Pistons were fine. Only concerning wear was in the rings themselves. Luckily.

I have a few questions regarding the rebuilding of this 1995 Mercury 2.5 litre XRi, EFI, 150 Black Max. I’m interested in doing a complete, 100% nothing left to chance rebuild. Every component of the engine examined and attended to and brought back to OEM or better. Is there a better venue to communicate with you? Thx!

Done with the rebuild went .030 over on bores. went with ccm reeds, lapped the alum blocks 400-600 grt. had to read the book on timing I’m confident tho.
