Smart Bun vs UnBun Review - Are Either of Them Worth Your Keto Dollars?

I've received numerous requests to review both the Smart Bun and the UnBun. Though UnBun has a contract with Whole Foods (which is nowhere near where I live), I still found a bag of their buns as well as a box of Smart Buns at my local health food store.
Each was just shy of $12 for a bag/box. At that price, these things better be the keto buns I dream of. In this video I taste both and perform blood glucose tests.

Good job reviewing, Smart Buns are only 63 calories while the Unbun is 200 plus. Foe me calories matter since I’m not strict keto. I think you should investigate the Mastering Diabetes theory of eating while you still have the BGM on, I would love to know if their fruit glucose theory is correct.

Sprinkle with Lily's chocolate chips before baking. To serve: Garnish with sugarfree caramel sauce, minced cocktail peanuts, and (if you have 'em) crushed keto-friendly Oreo-type cookies. After hearing the price of these buns, I didn't need to listen anymore, except for this speakers beautiful, soothing, voice. Even if I was rich, I'm not going to buy, and, eat, something that has little flavor, or, nutritional value, to it. God gave me a better brain than that to work with. I'm 65, and, have a small monthly income. More people would eat these Keto breads, and, foods in general, if they would put them out there in greater quantities, and, price them lower. Thanks for the review! Your descriptions are always so thorough and helpful. I do like the smart buns once in a while, especially during Thanksgiving to make stuffing. No matter how “fresh” they are, they always seem kinda crumbly and stale. I also didn’t like the fact that they basically disintegrate with anything juicy, like a hamburger. If you have a recipe for keto bourbon bread pudding I will be waiting on tenterhooks! 🤤🥃 The best/cleanest bread I’ve found lately is in the frozen section, it’s called Base Culture and it’s almond flour based. Toasts up perfect for egg (or regular) sammies and isn’t too nutty or eggy. They have it at Publix, and Lowe’s foods here in NC. Usually about $6-8 for a 16 oz (small) loaf.

Hi Steve, thanks for doing this review. I agree completely; I found both buns dry and tasteless. For my first unbun, I made a grilled cheese with copious amounts of butter. Didn’t help. The rest are still in the freezer and I can’t bring myself to eat them. I used the smart buns for real, very juicy hamburgers with cheese, lettuce and tomato, and slathered with mayonnaise (bun not toasted or grilled). Best thing I can say about them is they kept my hands clean. The company that makes smart buns also makes what I think are very good muffins. My fav is the pumpkin spice. They come out to about three dollars a muffin, but these are very large muffins. I’m curious to know what you might think about them. As always, thanks for your videos!

I've found ground flax + psyllium husk really does get a pretty good crumb in chaffles, but the flax adds a fairly earthy flavor and psyllium cancels out a portion of any sweetener you add. Cinnamon does a good job overriding the flax flavor. I would also attribute the rubbery texture to the flax rather than the psyllium.

The Smart Bun is good but falls apart with a juicy burger and tomato and fixins'. The UnBun is more sturdy and would hold up to a juicy burger or a sloppy Joe. Keeping them in the freezer for those times when you want something like that is a good idea so that you're not anxious to eat them before they expire. The UnBun I found to be more filling.

Thanks, Steve! Very informative. I wonder if the Unbun is more expensive as its a Canadian product. I live in Canada but I haven’t seen these buns in Loblaws - I’ve noticed that I have to go to speciality stores here to get low carb/Keto foods. I think the Smart bun would only be worth the price if one was having a cookout, and wanted to have a bun that looked like the real deal (even if it doesn’t taste quite like it). Once I add along the condiments etc, probably won’t notice its lackluster taste

Hey Steve, I know you are working on those cookie recipes. I just experimented and had good luck with this combo. I know it has a questionable ingredient because of inflammation, but I think it helps make the cookie less flattened. I used 3/4 c Crisco and 1 stick butter, 1 c allulose, 1/4 c swerve, and 1/4 c golden lakanto - mostly allulose. 2 eggs, vanilla Flours - 1 c pulverized lupini flakes, 3/4 cup anthony oat fiber, 1 1/4 cup anthony almond flour, 1/4 cup nut flour, half cup KA paleo flour. Adjust flour if needed after a test cookie. Cinnamon and nutmeg. 365 for 10 minutes. Leave on airbake cookie sheet to cool. After testing added choc chips.

I ate one bagel toasted with cream cheese in the other toasted with tons of butter and that wasn't enough to fix it. The bread was horrible also. Toasted with butter it would work with eggs, but that's about it. I tossed the rest in the garbage. If I would have consulted your video reviews first I would've avoided unbun LOL. So far the Keto Chow shakes have a pretty good record. Looking forward to turning one into ice cream. Carry on my friend!

@@tth740 I just made the white bread using the bamboo fiber today, it wasn’t great. 😞 So do not try to get the bamboo, it’s not worth the trouble. The dark bread is fantastic though, we all love it! 🤗

@@polly6783 cool, gonna try his dark bread minus the seeds in a bread machine. See how that goes. I have all the supplies already so going to be interesting. If it tastes good and does not spike glucose or kick me out of keto I will be super happy.

I do buy the smart buns, freeze them upon arrival, since I don’t eat much of any Keto breads I may eat one every 2 weeks or so. , and I do make a Chaffel but usually a sweet type with cinnamon , vanilla, and sugar substitute to eat when I need something “sweeter” but I do like the smart bun , I also pop them in the toaster not just thaw them and use them only when I want a hamburger. When I want a flatter bread I use the Whoopi pie silicone moulds and a almond flour recipe and I even slice those length wise to make my sandwich and save money that way.

Thehe I saw the AC/DC shirt and thought ‘I bet there is a Metallica one as well, I wonder what it looks like.’ Then there you are wearing the Metallica one. I appreciate that you have recipes for these things that otherwise might price someone out of a Keto lifestyle. For me personally, I try to stay away from processes foods as much as possible. I went vegan at one time to try to resolve some digestive issues, only to make it much worse. I think that it had a lot to do with me increasing the amount of processed foods that I was consuming.

I got the keto friendly buns from Aldi, they are about 4 dollars for 8. I freeze them individually wrapped as to maintain portion control. They are pretty good. As far as the buns you tested, wow thay are expensive!

I bought the Smart Buns once. Just once. I think we ate them with a burger and sloppy joe - better with the sloppy joe because it wasn’t so dry after soaking up the sauce. We never bought them again because they just didn’t deliver enough satisfaction for the price.

Aldi has 2g net carb hamburger buns, about the same price as their Zero Carb bread. Unlike the Zero Net Carb bread, the buns have soybean oil in them.
@fuzzydogpa7348

soybean oil is highly inflammatory, I pass on anything with that. If it's the very last ingredient then it might be very little, but it depends on how sensitive a person is to it. I tend to be quite sensitive to soy in general but those oils are highly processed and bad for the heart as well.

@@fuzzydogpa7348 The soybean oil shows up in the middle of the ingredient list. I personally don't have inflammation issues with soybean oil, but those that do may want to take note. As @seriousketo has pointed out, if you don't want to pay for $12 buns then sacrifices do need to be made.

I have tried both buns for burgers at family BBQ. I am already cooking so much for these occasions that making a few buns for those of us who are keto is too much. I liked both buns for burgers (we always toast them on the BBQ). While I do like the unbun products I find the buns very filling. Fortunately unbuns seems to be cheaper here in Canada

Another great review Steve! I'm going to put in another vote for the Aldi buns which taste good and definitely win in the value department. My wife and I eat them only occasionally so we're not too concerned that they have some soybean oil.

You know Steve, smash this down a bit and it could be an English Muffin replacement. I love a butter skillet grilled muffin. Maybe even put it in a ring to get the size. Just saying....

I totally agree on the buns. I was VERY excited to find the Smart Buns at my local Fareway and I tried them with a hamburger and a sloppy joe. It was way too thick for both. I found UnBuns and UnBagels at Hy-Vee this weekend and tried the bun with a slider. They are definitely better than the Smart Buns and definitely need to be toasted. Looking forward to toasting the UnBagel in the morning for a fried egg sammie!

Hey Steve, every time I try a bread product with psyllium I taste a dirt-like bitter flavor and ultimately throw the whole thing out. Is this something like cilantro, where there is a love/hate thing?

I bought the UnBuns a while back as they are available in Canada (Calgary, Alberta). Unfortunately I didn't like them at all and ended up throwing them out. Expensive lesson learned, I'll stick with my chaffles especially now that I can make 4 at a time.
