Honda's smart house is an innovative eco-friendly, energy efficient lab, that is able to generate its own power as a solution to living off the grid.
Created in partnership with the University of California at Davis, Honda's zero-net energy home is heated and cooled by the earth and generates enough power from solar energy to also run a car and feed energy back into the grid.
In designing the home, scientists at Honda said they took local weather conditions into account to optimise heating and cooling. They say once their data is made public, people will able to incorporate elements into the planning and design of their own homes.
But why is Honda in the business of building homes?
The car giant's involvement seems to indicate they are interested in more than just building cars of the future.
Michael Koenig, the project leader at Honda Smart Home, says as more people get electric vehicles it is crucial to know how they will integrate with people's homes and the electric grid.
TechKnow contributors Cara Santa Maria and Phil Torres spent a night at the zero-net energy house full of modern furniture, all of which are made from sustainable materials.
In this episode of TechKnow, we also look at another invention - Baxter, a robot designed to do simple industrial jobs, such as loading, unloading and handling materials on an assembly line.
But will it replace humans and is it safe for them to work alongside us?

it's crazy to me that the average consumption is 30kWh a day...even that the honda house is 18. My house is a 92 and the highest i've recorded since may was a average of 16kWh a day in August with 2 people in a Utah climate. So far thats just with a few upgrades such as LED lighting (~$150 for the whole house), Nest thermostat utilizing geofencing (~$250), and lutron occupancy sensing switches for high traffic/low utilization area's such as hallways, bathrooms, laundry rooms (~$20/per). This also brings down the cost of a future solar installation

It seems like the only difference from your average home is the solar panel and the geothermal energy recovering system, which are both very expensive to install and maintain and take quite some time to get a return on as an investment. Bottom line, the house mostly runs on a heat pump like any other house.

Energy companies will not just say 'ok' to homes that put energy back into the grid. They will do anything in their big power to stop any initiative that will take people away from the grid. This is why most people in Florida or Nevada are not using solar panels.

The house is awesome but the lights. I do understand the concept however, I like my house to be very bright at night. The dim yellow/red light makes me lazy and depressed. Because I'm a night person, that light would bug me. I rather have the yellow light during day because let's face it, who needs lights during the day if you have that much light coming in. Other than that, the house is amazing! Love it!

This all look great, but we can not look at a future still depending on the grid with homes like this. Homes like this balance their usage so that the owner ends up owing the power company very little if anything. In the end that leaves less and less cash flow towards the maintenance of the grid which is a problem that is only growing the more people make the switch. Something else will have to be thought up to make a move away from the grid.
@chrisw9451
@chrisw9451 8 жыл бұрын
And just for anyone who may be wondering, I am on the front lines of this problem. I have watched the power company start looking at how to regain the lost revenue and I have seen the solar companies file a lawsuit to stop the actions that the power companies are taking. I see both sides and I think we are headed towards some major obstacles.

However reality is that solar, even on everyone's home will not do the job at night. I think if we can get battery tech where it needs to be then we may have a chance at a bright future. We will most likely still use the grid and automatic transfer switches to supply us extra need or to cut us from the grid when it goes down.

I think the technology applied in this home, is as a co-moderator said: it Alex ready exists. Passive homes are already at use in large scale in Europe and funny though, that a house can be built in the US with gaps on it... The home, as some people here commented, are easily hacked, that's way the all connected homes are not a best sellers in Europe. I don't want to be hacked, as joke or as a robbery, or even by the government. The prices are as well affordable, because you save a lot of money in the future. Most homes have a kind of module that can be exchanged by newer technology if needed. We all know the speed of changes in IT.
