Hey Gunny, great demonstration on polyester primers, & just goes to show that old dogs can learn new tricks. I’ve never wanted to use it in the past because I’ve been afraid of it catalysing too quickly, & having to use such a large setup size to apply it. But these polyester primers are just incredible for getting decent build on old cars with factory ripples & imperfections in the steel. I see guys on YT (mostly American) wiping filler over every inch of an old car & then blocking it all back till there’s only a few microns left & more than 90% is on the floor in dust, when a few coats of this is essentially the same thing & much easier with less work. I learnt my lesson the hard way trying to get an old 62 Corvette straight. Those fibreglass bodies take a ton of work to get looking good & the amount of waves in OG bodywork was just crazy. Would never do another one without polyester filler.

Polyester resins traditionally use unwaxed/waxed styrene monomer to thin down, Gunny ! I worked in the surf industry for decades n that is the go-to stuff. Having said that, we only applied resin with brushes or rollers - spraying may be different ? Loving this build mate👍🙏

Evercoat slick sand is by far the best I've ever personally used. Been spraying it for years on restorations and bodywork. Never had a single failure

Long ago I used acetone to thin the poly primer brandPCL) I used. I would mix it 1:1 so wasn't looking for tons of build. I found I had to add quite a bit more catalyst to get it to cure in a reasonable time. This was on personal cars that I still have and painted 15 years ago and still no problems at all.

Have you ever tried a "squirrel cage paint mixer" on a cordless drill to mix the product? Once there is some space in the can, these can do wonders to blend the solids into the liquid.

I have a cheap plastic blade mixer that works great on a small drill. Just don’t use a high speed setting. Ask me how I know. Such a mixer on a cordless drill will do more mixing in 60 seconds than you can do by hand in 30 minutes.

Hi gun man you can use a cheap 10 litre bucket to do the first mix to make sure the product is fully stirred through and that should make life a little easier when doing your paint mix

They make a small mixer for a cordless drill you can mix it in a few minutes with one of those know it doesn't Splash it out of the can

Has anyone got any tips on prepping and painting new fiberglass parts we have been painting pop up campervan roofs for a customer we have tried a few ways to get rid of the waxey release agent hot sopeiy water scotch scotching with panel wipe etc but it's a lot of effort and it still ends up gumming up the paper on a DA in seconds

You hit the nail on the head with the resto community as far as if you use something they don't, you are doing it wrong!

I tried a paint mixer on a drill once with my DNA primer/sealer, bad move 1/4 of the can went everywhere 🙃, maybe a shaker will be a better choice next time

Hi, you mention several different types of primer in your video, epoxy, urathane and polyester, when and why do you use the different types, thanks in advance Gunny.

That amount of build would be bloody amazing for some home repair hack like me Lol. I think would save a bit of back and forth and probably fillers

Good afternoon,, My question is of course everything is expensive so I prefer to save money where I can without messing up the job. I currently have omni epoxy primer and omni high build. I was hoping to save on the base and have a better clear but I wasn't sure about painting on top of different brand names. I'm trying to match my truck color which is red quartz tintcoat on the gmc truck. What brands would you recommend without losing out on the look or procedures. Very stressful. Thank you for your time. Don L

No good reviewing a product ( Smart Sand - polyester ) that you cant buy here in Australia. And Sprayguns Direct wont ship unless you buy a pallet load.
