But is it better to find out after the fact that a payment bounced? It will be way less stress if you keep on top of things to avoid surprises. You're budget etc doesn't have to be perfect (no such thing, it changes as your life changes), but just paying attention gives you more control.

I remember when my grandmother went shopping, when the clerk asked how will she pay she’d always say, “Cash”. It made me feel “rich” hearing her say that because it meant she had the money to buy stuff and didn’t need to borrow it from credit. I’m using that now. Haven’t used credit in two months. I know it’s not long, but it’s a new beginning for someone who used it for everything.

A win for 2024 was that I finally convinced my parents to be their own “credit card” by having money in an account that they use for purchases instead of a credit card they used to keep near its limit. Yes! 🎉 But I have some financial challenges coming up this year, so time to strap myself in for 2025. Happy New Year everyone! 🥳

Ecclesiastes also talks about “lifestyle creep” in the futility of riches. “One who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor one who loves abundance with its income. This too is futility. When good things increase, those who consume them increase. So what is the advantage to their owners except to look at them? The sleep of the laborer is sweet, whether he eats little or much; but the full stomach of the rich person does not allow him to sleep.” ‭‭Ecclesiastes‬ ‭5‬:‭10‬-‭12‬

This is so so so true. I received an unexpectedly large inheritance and it immediately felt like a weight. Then I started shopping ... but that was just to avoid emotions and 90% of the purchases went back to the store. Soon I realized that this was a responsibility that God had assigned to me because we have always been frugal and on a budget. I can help charities, friends and family members if I choose. I take all decisions to prayer and ask God to give me wisdom.

The one thing I stopped doing that made a difference in my credit card usage is thinking of my credit limit as MY money. It’s only the amount available to me to borrow, with interest. Even if I pay it back every statement and avoiding interest, I’m borrowing it. It’s just best to use my own money for purchases.

Wish I discovered you guys earlier! You're hilarious! I am on a quest for a few years now to better manage my finances and find some better ways to save for retirement. I was starting to feel a little bit disappointed and discouraged, because from what I researched, it would be quite a challenging journey. As I recently discovered the 7 baby steps, and signing up for all the newsletters, taking the tests and whatever resources I could find (from Ramsey, George and Rachel), but since I'm not based in the US, not everything applies to my situation though, surprisingly, It looks like I'm at step 7! Which is amazing for me! It really gave me the encouragement and confirmation that I'm on the right track! Thank you! Very grateful for your work! ♥

Once a year here in the UK, I look at all of my subscriptions from TV streaming to music and health apps to see which ones I hardly ever use, or those I can easily live without. And at services like hair dressing, where the prices keep rising (I cut my own hair successfully during Covid lockdowns). The total I can save in 2025 is Pounds Sterling £1,303 - US $1,577. Money I could be using to invest and grow. Everyone should do this audit at least once a year, preferably every few months.

Many people DO pay off credit card debt every month.
@Farbar1955
@Farbar1955 Ай бұрын
Same here. If you have credit cards for travel (miles/points) then they should be used like cash you already have, not as extra cash. If you spend $300/month on dining out then you can put that $300 on your card, get the miles/points while keeping the $300 in an interest-bearing checking account, let the interest grow while that money sits there, then pay off the card with that same $300 when it's due. The key: DON'T SPEND THAT $300 ON ANYTHING ELSE! There are thousands of people who do this responsibly. You have to keep up with this but you should be keeping up with your money and expenses anyway, card or no card. I flew all over the USA last year solely on the miles/points I had accumulated and I was not out of any extra money and these were trips I had to take anyway. If I paid cash I would have had to spend extra money. Instead, I saved money. Again, you have to be responsible for keeping up with everything but you should be doing that anyway with any of your funds.

Just a little tip. Whenever you subscribe to anything. Look at the renewal date. And put a reminder in your phone calendar as an alarm. Either a week before or two days before. So you can cancel in time. Or use a burner debit card so it never comes out of your real account.

I understand your perspective on credit cards, but we pay off our every month and keep on top of our spending along the way. I know Dave always says that nobody got rich off of points, but we get points on our card through our business purchases as well as personal and the points are used on groceries right at the store checkout. We shop at the discount grocery store, use price-matching, couponing and rebates and save approximately $60-80 off the groceries each trip with the points accrued. This has really helped keep our food budget on track with a family of 7. We don't use points for gift cards or travel, but save for those in sinking funds when we make those plans. We shop for most of our family's clothes at thrift stores, for frugality and sustainability, not necessity. We are also about to pay off our home in the next 6 months. We have no debt, a fully funded emergency fund, resp's for kids and some retirement savings. What's your take on this?
@krissifaith6709
@krissifaith6709 29 күн бұрын
If you are late once...or dont pay it off . Not worth it. We ran our business on cc...6k-8k/mth didnt offer enough rewards for a week of groceries. Also, it tempted us to spend more than usual. Also, 76% of folks do NOT pay them off each month.
@strixt
@strixt 12 күн бұрын
Most rules aren't universal, they are general. 97% of people don't redeem airline miles so those are irrelevant, around 60% of people don't systematically pay off CC debt (and things can/do happen to part of the other 40%), and cash back for those that don't keep it paid off every single month don't add up to the interest accrued. There are people that can manage it well, yes. Most don't.

Also I love to shop online and not using my debit card online as prices are much better online. I went to academy and a pair of shoes was $80!!! Whattt?? Went to Amazon and same EXACT pair was $40. Yep totally bought them!

Real Question: When it comes to "not using your credit cards as an emergency fund", would you guys not hate the idea if this was done during Baby Step #2? Currently, the hubs and I have a $1500 emergency account, but we still have credit cards that would cover a larger emergency. (i.e. $6000+) We don't use it for small emergencies, only if something catastrophic were to happen. If this option is NOT okay, should we go ahead and switch our priorities and save a larger emergency fins? Right now we are in full snowball repayment so every extra dollar goes to debts from when we were young and stupid. Thank you for the advice.

I used to work at one. Not sure how far up things went, but the owners of our buildings were horrible bosses. No respect for the workers, penny pinching (if something broke they wouldnt get it properly fixed, forced us to take unpaid lunches, lost their minds if i went 2 hours overtime when i was needed by our manager. The manager had been working with them for 5 years and they never let her take vacation.) They always assumed we were lying about stupid stuff we werent, etc.
