Tremendously diligent cracking job Sam. Well done. Piecing together such a smashed and rather delicate plastic part was not something we thought possible, but you’ve managed it. This series is always such a joy. Cherio and ciao.

I really enjoy this series too Sam. I salvaged a broken Hornby Evening star in a similar fashion (the valvegear on one side was broken) alothough I cheated and got a new set from Hornby spares! Something very satisfying about fixing something that's destroyed. Keep up the good work!

I was betting the scrapman had this model in the bag. Glad to see he's still only got 1 model so far! I was curious to see if this was going on eBay, and would've loved to see a followup to see if the glue held. Guess Sam didn't want to risk someone bidding on it and it falling apart after shipping! Side note: I'd love to see a behind the scenes of this series! How the time-o-matic calculated, how scrapman was built, etc.

Hi Sam great repair on this loco. 2 part epoxy is my go to adhesive. You will get a much stronger bond if you use a low heat source, maybe a convector heater or radiator. You might want to try this idea on some scrap plastic first.

Yea I added about 200g extra weight to my Hornby Class 40 too, to make it useable. Tough the best solution would be to add a second driven bogie, or buy a Bachmann class 40, instead.

This was outstanding to see, I really wasn't sure if it was possible to rebuild that bogie. When I saw it on the intro to the other Salvage or Scrap videos, I thought the entire truck was completely missing! Also if I'm not mistaken this is the first DCC (and also DCC sound) loco to be featured on Salvage or Scrap. I have a question, will you be keeping this one in your collection? It will be really cool if it shows up in future videos.

Ah, 40 164. An interesting loco in its own right, as it was the loco involved in the Christmas Eve 1977 crash at Glasgow Queen Street. On the morning of Christmas Eve, 40 164 was coming in to take a Glasgow - Aberdeen express, when the brakes failed down Cowlairs bank. The signalmen tried to divert the loco on to a free platform, but only succeeded in sending it onto platform 5, which held the - thankfully empty - stock of the 06:00 to Mallaig. The engine and the rolling stock was badly damaged. And why did the engine breaks fail? Well, the story is that wheel profiling had left the brakes with very little to bite on, and the rest is history.

If I recall, Hornby TTS decoders have a setting where they can run on DC or DCC with the decoder installed with the DC side enabled by default. That said, not the most reliable of reverse compatibility. I still think it was cheating to wait for glue to dry and pause the time :P Seriously though, you had a pretty decent shot at this and you did a lot better than I would have done with it.
