@@cosmosaic8117 I hear ya but as someone who was born in 1980 and a teenager through most of the early and late 90s, I just feel like voice of a generation isn't really appropriate for Steve Harwell. A really good songwriter and lyricist for sure (RIP) but when I think of voice of a generation for the 90s I think of the Seattle guys like Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Layne Staley, and Chris Cornell, or Billy Corgan or maybe even Shannon Hoon or Bradley Knowles, before I'd think of Harwell. @@InkfinityOkamix3 Says the band in some interview, but the lyrics reference the commercialization of 60's counterculture mostly. It seems like they are alluding to the LA Riots in the last set of lyrics "New is on at 10, your neighborhood is under attack" and "handkerchief is soaked in tears because her baby's life has been revoked". The message seems to be basically that counterculture is cylindrical and that it becomes just another stupid trend before it ever starts to make any real difference. Occupy Wall Street, SJWs and The Tea Party might be good modern examples. The start off genuine, but the get co opted by posers and those with ulterior motives, such as Coca Cola's "By The World a Coke" ad or Pepsi's infamous Black Lives Matter protest ad.

It was 1999, one of the few memories I have as a 3 year old is driving around in my Dad’s convertible on a sunny summer California day and All Star comes on the radio and my Dad and sister are teasing me because apparently it’s my favorite song and I lose it whenever I hear it. Shed a few tears today hearing that the singer passed, didn’t know how dear to my heart they were. Later on I got caught up in the jokes and memes about Smash mouth, but they’re no joke. These songs are timeless and dude is an insane lyricist.

An absolutely underrated classic. Takes me right back to being a kid…hanging out at the community pool eating fries, pretzels, and Italian ice with this song blasting over the speakers every 30 minutes on the radio. Though Steve will likely pass in the coming days or weeks, this song will invoke emotion in many for years to come! “It ain't no joke when a mama's handkerchief is soaked With her tears because her baby's life has been revoked The bond is broke up, so choke up and focus on the close up Mr. Wizard can't perform no godlike hocus-pocus”

The post-grunge period of music marked (most likely) the only time in the history of mainstream music where bands with completely different sounds and influences could find a place on the charts with consistent airplay and rotation. Rage Against the Machine, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Smash Mouth, Blues Traveler, Radiohead, and Matchbox Twenty were all very different, but found much success. Didn't last long, however, but the musical variety that this 5 to 6 year period allowed for was amazing. Much respect.

***** Yeah, it seems that music today is becoming more eclectic and diverse, in contrast to the genre-guided periods of years past. But this is really only due to the death of terrestrial radio, which also killed 'waves' and sound trends...For rock, everything is pretty much classified as 'New Rock,' or ' New Alternative' now. It's good that radio no longer "...plays what they want you to hear...," but it's harder to find talented acts because there are so many media outlets now for music. However, I will say that even on SiriusXM, they DO have a rotation, but they offer more stations specific to what you want to hear. I dunno.

Respectfully, I would submit that the early 70's was at least as diversified in style as the 90's. You had everything from country (Glen Campbell) to gospel (Ocean, Jesus Christ Superstar Album), bubble gum (Osmonds), R&B (Gladys Knight, Jackson 5) rock (Alice Cooper) and even spoken word (Byron Macgregor) playing one right after the other. Those particular artists are obviously just a few examples, but you get my point.

@@Il_Exile_lI really?? This was a number 1 single, on the ALL GENRE FORMAT hot 100!!! Selling out was impossible, they were already sold. This album was just as formulatic as Astro Lounge. But they vary in different ways. The thing is, when this song came out it sounded unique and original. But by 1999 this sound had already been in the forefront of the mainstream with other artists performing similar music. After the likes of Sugar Ray, Sublime and other reggae/ska influenced groups started putting out hit after hit, it was so familiar. So Smash Mouth did NOT sell out. They only happened to represent a popular movement in music.
