I would give this one to Saphira. Yes, Smaug is bigger and physically much stronger and has the much harder Scales, but Saphira is much more agile. There also isn't really anything stopping her from just taking over his mind. Yes, the mind of a Dragon is hard to control, but they are both Dragons and Saphira is well trained on the subject, while Smaug never heard of it. Once she had control of his mind she could just drain the energy from his body until he either faints or dies. While her body probably could not hold so much energy, there should be more than enough gemstones under the montian to put it all. If all else fails she should at least be fast enaugh to escape and she has a lot of backup to pull from while Smaug is all alone. And if she gets a magic flash he is very screwed anyway...

this is a fight I would have given to Saphira. Yes, Smaug is much bigger and has almost impenetrable scales, but Saphira is much more agile. I think sooner or later she would be able to pin him down and go for the eyes. also there isn't much stopping her from taking over Smaug's mind.

the only real problem i had with saphira was her feathery wings, like was it really so hard to make bat like wings, probably a lot easier than all those feathers

+anders van calcar I agree, I would have preferred her to have bat wings, but then again, the same as I would have preferred Smaug to have four legs. It's just a difference that I got over and took in stride because I knew it was the directors/creative team trying to make these dragons unique.

Tbh, I feel like the feathered wings give saphira a more graceful & elegant look, more feminine than bat wings, also I think that giving Smaug 2 legs instead of 4 makes him seem more intimidating, like he doesn't need extra limbs to be more powerful and kick ass, but that's just my opinion 😐

as a big fan of both of these dragons I say well done but I do have to ask what do you think of the 1977 adaptation of smaug compared to his 2013 adaptation not how they look but what how each is portrayed and there presence on screen and witch one shows there arrogance better P.S. Noble Six Thank you, I'm pleased you liked the video and the pairing! :) Which version do I like better? Mainly the 2013 version. Whilst 1977 was more faithful to the book, I admit that the 2013 version has more presence on screen and off, as well as feeling like more of a threat. Also, there's more time in the 2013/14 version to show more of his personality which makes him more enjoyable. So yeah, I think I'm going with 2013 :)

Dragons in Tolkien also posess magical abilities, including Smaug who is known for having a hypnotical gaze which is able to overpower the will of others: „Whenever Smaug's roving eye, seeking for him [Bilbo] in the shadows, flashed across him, he trembled, and an unaccountable desire seized hold of him to rush out and reveal himself and tell all the truth to Smaug. In fact he was in grievous danger of coming under the dragon-spell. But plucking up courage he spoke again." This is reminiscent of how the father of dragons, Glaurung, deals with Turin who is subsequently seduced by the Dragons words: „Then Turin sprang about, and strode against him, and the edges of Gurthang shone as with flame; but Glaurung withheld his blast, and opened wide his serpent-eyes and gazed upon Turin. Without fear Turin looked into them as he raised upon the sword; and straightway he fell under the binding spell of the lidless eyes of the dragon, and was halted moveless. Then for a long time he stood as one graven of stone; and they two were alone, silent before the doors of Nargothrond […] And Turin being under the spell of Glaurung hearkened to his words, and he say himself as in a mirror misshapen by malice, and loathed that which he saw.“ Now it could be that Smaugs magic is way less powerful than Glaurungs due to ancestral distance and Morgoths as well as Saurons long absence; it could also be that Smaug is just toying with Bilbo to test his spirit as he is toying with him in their conversation as he is shown to already know all the information he needs about Bilbos company only through his intellect and deduction skills. There really is no conclusive answer to this. It may also be that the power of dragons mind binding abilities depends on the character of their opponent’s: Turin is arrogant and too fond of himself, while Bilbo is modest and not just brave, but „courageous“, putting more thoughtfulness into his actions. Saphire I think would be more similar to Turin than Bilbo. She is very … self-asserting and proud which can devolve into hybris. One can see elements of this when in one of the books there’s a scene from heir perspective flying while she is marveling about her beauty and exceptionalism. This seems inviting for a spell as laid out by Tolkien which is much more subtle than magical attacks in Eragon which are much more akin to kinetic attacks and sword thrusts than subconscious and well-tasting poison. But even this wouldn’t answer how Smaug would deal with another kind of magic being used on him, and we also have no precedent for this in Tolkiens works regarding other dragons. So I think the issue is much less clear cut than you make it out to bel but not decisive in either direction. Smaugs armor meanwhile is definitely superior to Saphiras who is very dependent on Eragons shield spells (at least as far as protection goes of course) while Smaugs hide is virtuous impenetrable except for his small weak spot where you would need something to thrust with continuous momentum in order to penetrate deeply enough through his slug-like underside to hit his heart. Smaug also outclasses Saphira in scale if we take the book versions of both (there’s of course Tolkiens painting with a very small Smaug but Tolkien himself said that this is intentionally misleading scaling to make Bilbo even visible in comparison). If Saphira wants to start a more conventional attack, she would need to get close. But she is of course unquestionably the better flyer. Even for a dragon in general her skills are recognized by Glaedr, especially for her age. And this doesent even take into account that Tolkiens fire-breathing dragons are much worse at flying than other types of dragons in Middle Earth, not to mention the eagles. So Saphira would definitely have an edge in aversion skills and disengagement capabilities and this can almost already suffice to say that she wouldn’t loose. But can she overpower the most powerful dragon of the third age of middle earth? I have my doubts.
