I agree with this 100%. I tell customers 330 hp on shit California gas, 390 with E85. If all is right, this is track day safe. A little more is possible for short duration like street use. This is if the tuning is perfect, the fueling, cooling, and everything else is great, and the engine is in good shape to start with. At higher power levels you are one knock event from killing it so it is all about the tuning. The tuner has to be smart and understand Subarus.

As a dyno guy... I seem to see that 430whp is about the end of what may stay together(stock block daily), and that's assuming good fuel and not doing sustained side to side G-Load. After that I feel it always benefits the user doing something more substantial in the block/heads/gaskets. Depending on the "stock block" year/type though, you could be only safe around 350whp...

The crevice volume (area between the top of the piston and the compressio ring) of a oversquare engine like the EJ is naturally bigger and thus increases hydrocarbon emissions. Gas gets stuck between the cylinder walls and the pistons, then get expulsed on the exhaust stroke. This is why Subaru had to use small ringlands, higher up on the pistons, which makes them weaker, especially during detonation events.

@@Craiggg12345 dude thanks for all that info! I screenshot it so I can basically follow the build on my 2017 sti. Are the killer b headers something you think I should do no matter what? I love the rumble but if the equal length headers mean better drivability, better for the engine and easier to reach that power then I’ll use them for sure. Also why the 04 sti fpr if you don’t mind me asking.

What’s safe for a stock fa20 engine hp wise. Currently tuned for around 280hp on pump 91. I wanna go to E60 tune. End goal 380hp to 400hp is that realistic for a daily
@Smeedia4 ай бұрын
FA20s I see all over. I’d say that 360-380 mark is a pretty good sweet spot. LSPI (low speed pre ignition) is the weak point on FAs

how are the 6 cylinders stock blocks when you start to introduce boost? I eventually wanna try to build a daily with a boosted EZ30 R and have it sit around 18-23lbs of boost.
@georgepumpernickel6033 ай бұрын
look up videos from the aussies, forgot the guys name but he appeared in the videos mcm did with their ez30 levorg. The series is a good start for getting information, but research is key. Absolute must though is the closed deck modification, as they don't like much boost. Outfront and possum bourne motorsport did/do closed deck machining on them. Most stuff you will find will be from australia since they got the 3.0r legacies with the 6 speed.

I have a wrx too and I’m debating swapping the engine jus for these reasons
@kylekennedy214 ай бұрын
Speaking on built 2.5’s sticking a 2.5 in a 05 wrx, I have decided to just go that route so I can have more head room for power. Would you do the hybrid or make 2.5 heads work? I’ve seen parts to make the 2.5 heads work just can’t find a good enough set of castings to use
@Smeedia4 ай бұрын
Personally I would just use 2.5 heads. You can scoop D25 heads for a decent price on market place or eBay. You can do a hybrid set up if you want to. Don’t see it done as much anymore but can definitely do so if you want to 🫡

@@Smeedia I’ll have to keep looking, I’ve decided it’s probably better to just build a 257 vs building a 205 lol

What is the difference in the engines in the wrx vs sti?

Im hoping to be around 400whp with a forged piston stock rod ej20x with a TF06-18k. Its been a solid motor up to this point and im fine with the torque loss of 2.0. Ideally i find a ej22T block or i get a thick walled 207 block. Switching to spec b 6 speed at the moment as well

What are the biggest differences between a Subaru vs Porsche boxer engine?
@Smeedia4 ай бұрын
Tbh depends on the Porsche engine. The turbos and most newer ones use dry sumps. On some older P cars the cylinders actually bolt onto the case halves

Hey, I got a question I hope you can answer! I hate to ask forums because I know the hate I will get lol. I have a 2012 WRX Hatchback in rally blue that I love. It went from 49K to 215k without a single issue other than the clutch, brakes, tires, and headlamps. Now it has low compression in a cylinder. The car itself is in great condition. No rust, no tears inside, carpets have been always covered by mats, etc. I want to drive the car but inspection won't pass due to engine fault with cylinder. I'm curious, should I just buy an engine from eBay? They say compression is between 130-140 in all cylinders, and the engine looks VERY clean, but not clean to the point where they cleaned it just for photos... It is USDM but they don't know the mileage :( OR do you think I should rip apart my engine and rebuild the short block? I have the money but I don't want to stick too much money into this... but there is an ROI, and that is I get to drive my truck less... if I keep driving my truck, the worth of it is going to decrease more than the cost to put in a new engine into my Subaru and drive that instead. I'm good with my hands, I have tools, I've done this work before but not on Subaru (Mitsubishi is where my mechanic experience comes from), I have a truck, I have a place to work on it, etc.

I have a 94 wrx type RA (EJ20G closed deck) 144k km's 148-152psi across all 4. What are my options for 350whp? Is it worth it to keep my ancient engine since its closed deck or should I just do a v7 drive train swap since parts don't exist for these anymore?

I need an opinion: I am daily driving an 05 sti, Freshly rebuiilt heads and new block at Auto Science, a trusted subie shop near me. Although the block is stock, the internals are wiseco forged, and its tuned very well at 24 psi on a blouch 1.5xtr on Flex Fuel @ 440hp If daily driven normally with the occasional pull, would the motor last a while? Theres also a million other supporting mods like Killer b ELH, pickup, baffled pan, AOS, Oil cooler, etc

Hey Tanner great vid 👍 - question: I'm on a stock block 15' sti - I seem to be pushing coolant, probably a lifted head? Not seeing any leaks when it's parked but am constantly topping up the overflow... will a leak down test confirm this suspicion??
