New 2.3 the destroked motor is not new lol it’s 15 years old at least now. Maybe iag makes it but honestly it ain’t shit untill it has 4mm longer rods and 83mm stroker pistons. Then you have made an actual difference in ratios.

9:39 if you don’t want to struggle holding when assembling the rods, bolt the flywheel to the crank and set it upright. It gives you an awesome base when doing torquing

7:59 - one time the Snap-on man pissed me off with a torque wrench issue i had. He laughed in my face and didn't help with a solution... I found out who makes the torque wrenches for Snap-on and i bought the whole set 1/4", 3/8” and 1/2" drive for less than the cost of one 1/2” drive torque wrench! Anger gets shit done. 😎

Here in the uk the 2.5s just dont hold when getting tracked at that power level, we learnt that over 10 years ago, the thinest part is the liners and too much movement from block, cracked liners and headgaskets go all the time at that power level when raced, the only block we use here is ej22 bored to a 2.35, reliable, torque and revs. Under 500flywheel the ej25 is a decent road car.

That geared idler timing belt pulley that runs dry sump pump is the bearing that always fails first. I hope it doesn't add more load to the bearing and fail even sooner.

Welp went up and looked at the '15 sti,it was a total basketcase,it needed suspension,all the bushings needed replaced and thinking it had a 207 block or something,looked underneath and found out it had U20 cylinder heads. Ended up looking at a '16 sti limited not to far from that dealership,and that one was so much cleaner and looked better overall,going back up in 2 weeks to hopefully sign the paperwork and drive it home

I hate to be a Negative Nancy but please don't use a screw impact driver to tighten the screws on that back cover. Blue Loctite and an apex in a 1/4 drive socket. 🤦♂ On a positive note, Looks good man! I have been using a friend's water blast cabinet. It does wonders for aluminum parts.

Set the mains .0015 and the rod .002 perfect cuz the block expands and makes them bigger naturally but the rods are the ticket lol.

That difficult part with this one is finding an optimal clearance for a dry sump. From the couple people I’ve talked to .002-.003 on this is where I should target. I’m expecting some type of revision may be made later on though

I opted for tighter clearance on the rings so I don’t send this engine to the moon for power. Opened the bearings a bit for 20-50 and to experiment a little with using a dry sump

They shouldn’t be, after the blocks been bored and honed with the torque plate is should be fairly true. I’m sure there will be a small distortion but nothing that push measurements out of tolerance

This is really cool, definitely gonna save up for a dry sump, and hopefully I shouldn’t have to tune for it but I’ll talk to my tuner first. Building a high rpm big turbo ej257 for my 06 STi time attack build. I have an IAG AOS, Killer B oil pan pickup and baffle as well as the Outfront Motorsport oil pump. I’ll be interested to see how the different setups compare. Also, would I be able to run the AOS and dry sump at the same time or is it one or the other?

What was that company that does the oil filter housing screws again? I got an oil cooler kit for my VQ awhile ago but the adapter screw they sent is no bueno... apparently awd VQs have a different oiling system than rwd VQs (I know the pans are different but...)? The Mocal adapter is basically the opposite of what will fit in my block.

Tanner, can you explain how you decided your piston ring end gap amount? Is that what Manley suggests for those piston rings and horsepower? Sounds like it depends on what material the top piston ring is made out of? I've seen a few people pushing (0.020 top) and 0.025 second but with 1000 hp+ builds.

Cylinder pressure (aka boost) will be a big factor. Personally I set mine a little tighter on this engine so I do not send it to the moon like I do in most of my engines. Could I anyway, yes but the gaps a bit tight for higher boost levels. There is a formula you can use to capture a rough range for where you should gap the rings to

Its stock right now but i'd like to do a few mild upgrades and make it a little fun, reliable, daily driver. The stock turbo seems a little weak. I was thinking of swapping it for an STI turbo, intercooler, and running a highflow downpipe/cat. Shooting for around 280-300 hp. Currently rebuilding the engine. Planning to run Mahle 4032 pistons. Any thoughts or advice?

What's your opinion on the oem head bolt torque to yield procedure? I have always reused the bolts when doing head gaskets but I've had better luck using an actual ft/lb procedure instead of torquing and angles.
