I'm really glad people are still making SMiLE mixes. It's still the best unfinished album of all time! Nice job, lots of fun stuff here

Surely Brian finished it when it was released.

@@davidwilliams2403 Brian finished two projects: Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE, and the Smile Sessions. It may seem like a pedantic distinction, but it is important. When I make my own SMiLE fan mixes, I do take both of those projects as gospel, as they were BRIAN's own contributions. But, in Brian's own words, "Smile was scrapped, the whole thing was scrapped." And sadly, the efforts from 1966-67 remain that way today. Hell, the evidence for this is in the pudding: so many people feel the need to make their own SMiLE fan mixes to this day. Why? It's unfinished.

I’ll never understand why people, including folks in the band, continue to cut the single best chorus on this entire album, The Vega Tables chorus. My daddy says eat a lot sleep a lot brush em like crazy. Run a lot do a lot never be lazy It’s accidentally autobiographical in a dark way and utterly beautiful, and gives the song a much needed rest exactly where it should be. Boosts the song from just good to sublime. Makes it stand definitive and proud on this record next to Surfs Up and Good Vibrations, and everyone cuts it for literally no reason. Such a shame.
@gwaunch196710 ай бұрын
Technically it’s not cut on this mix, it’s just repurposed. It’s used as a chorus for I’m In Great Shape, because if I remember correctly the “Do A Lot” session was on the same tape as IIGS, but I could be wrong. I know there was some connection between those two before it was reused in Vega-Tables.

I always think my SMiLE obsession has finally gone away, and then I get sucked back in. It’s crazy how far it’s come in 20 years; I remember being on the SMiLE Shop board and anonymous people talking about clips they had heard, or knew existed but very few people had heard them. I always remember Desmond Jones saying he heard a version of Do A Lot with sound effects on it, like pots and pans and silverware clinking around. It was all such a mystery back then. Over the years we learned a lot of the answers, but there’s still enough questions that you keep coming back to it.

Justin! I was more of a lurker back then, but later on I was a regular at The Record Room. Somewhere I still have a printout of a thread where you listed all of the sections of H&V and their names. I think someone even said ‘someone should print this out as a quick guide’. I printed it off, thinking it would come in handy!

I was obsessed with Smile from 1998 when I discovered it until 2004 when Brian completed it. I would take tracks from the Good Vibrations box set, released tacks like Cabinessence and Surfs Up, and whatever I could find on Napster and made many Smile mixes. It was fun! Then I made one to align with the 2004 order and stopped......until 2011 when the Smile sessions came out! But in recent years I have grown tired of it. I enjoy hearing alternate versions. I have had ideas using a lit of material from disk 2-5, but for some reason they are copyright blocked and I can't upload my purchased songs to Audacity.

How do you go about re-mixing these songs? Like how do you get the tracks, do you have stems? Is it AI? I wanna try it out myself I know this album like it’s etched in my head every second

@@Hal9000ize Those are quite the polar opposites, eh? I wonder if the concept really changed that much during the time that Brian was fully engaged?
@Providence.. Жыл бұрын
@@Hal9000ize He did, he is actually on recording saying so during one of the sessions for Our Prayer. He had also mentioned that it wasn't going to be its own track either, but rather, it was going to be a "hidden" intro track as part of Heroes and Villains. I suppose there's a chance that could've changed given that Brian was susceptible to sudden creative shifts at that time, but I'd personally trust the word of Brian more than some interview with a production assistant journalist two years after the shelving of the project. Besides, in my own subjective opinion, it just doesn't sound right to have Our Prayer at the end of Heroes and Villains.

@@Providence..I mean, Vosse heard multiple of Brian’s acetates and explanations of how they’d go together, so he’s not entirely dismissible.
