Smiling Friends Go To Brazil just aired on Adult Swim and HBO Max. Charlie, Pim and the rest of the gang travel to Brazil, but it didn't go how you'd expect. With the fakeout tactic from Adult Swim, did Smiling Friends Go To Brazil end up being a disappointment? Was it actually a special episode?
From the beginning, Adult Swim had been promoting Smiling Friends Go To Brazil as a very special episode. It didn't belong in Season 1 and also wasn't a part of the upcoming Season 2, so what exactly makes it so special? Well, it took on a different formula from everything we're used to in other Smiling Friends episodes. Because of this curveball, this may be one of the show's most divisive stories within the fandom.

When I watched the special this morning, I was so disappointed, only really seeing value in the realism of the situation. And when I went on tumblr and people had similar reactions. But in hindsight, that was because of the expectations I had going to the episode and typical vacation episodes. Just from the word “special” alone, I thought this episode was going to be 30 minutes. But in a way, the entire plot of them getting stuck at the airport and realizing the hotel was never booked is a twist on its own. Like the whole episode is a plot twist. That’s actually really clever, in an artistic sense.

The episode was alright, but I can understand people finding it boring. Honestly I don’t think it was that special, but I’ll say at least the interactions was ok to keep me paying attention at least. My rio adventure was worst! I was in the marines at the time on a Unitas float. We went many places. Lima Peru. Panama city, Ecuador. Honestly, the thing I liked most about this "special" is the fact that it was realistic, while also not being too harsh about it. My family and I went on a field trip back in June (going on another one later this month, in fact), and we also had the experience of trying to find a hotel to book. Luckily we did manage to find one, but the pain was still there. This episode managed to capture that pain PERFECTLY without it being irritating. Season 2 cannot get here any quicker.

I genuinely can't remember the last time I saw a cartoon with such realistic dialogue. The writing, the timing, and the deliveries all come together to make the conversations sound remarkably grounded, and that's no small feat considering two of the speaking characters are being voiced by one person. This episode has to be the show's pinnacle so far in that sense.

Adult cartoons like Rick and Morty usually leave us feeling like shit (making a joke out of saying life doesn’t matter, kill yourself lol, or the fact that no matter what we do it doesn’t change anything). Not only is Smiling Friends a breath of fresh air. It’s a realistic show with realistic people who interact with realistic stuff. It doesn’t have to be extreme, just something to watch, listen, and metaphorically nod in agreement because you get it. (I hope this actually makes sense because I don’t know how best to describe it…)
