I really believe this one skill can make all the difference in life. When I see someone and think that I INSTANTLY like somebody, when I think about it, they were smiling while talking.

I've met two people who were a master at this. One was a former project manager who for whom I contracted. I was amazed at how he could speak angrily to someone about something they have done but with nods and smiles and the listener never realized until the end that they were just reprimanded because they felt so comfortable with him. The second person was a family planner who was trying to get me to invest in his products. And although I didn't understand the lingo of stocks and bonds I did hire him as I felt him as trustworthy, with all his nods and smiles.

I knew a guy who did this naturally where I worked. He was universally liked but he didn't really stand out in any other way. He just had this permanent smile when he spoke with people. It's really powerful.

Me - smiling while talking. My friends - C'mon, who's she?

what i learned here is adding light inoffensive humour to the conversation at intervals, being visually self aware of how you don't want to be perceived as some sort of strong personality, and mildly exaggerating your own humourous statements with change in intonation & a somewhat submissiveness in demeanour looking for approval from the other person, but being self-aware of it & therefore again avoiding any strong personality (poor self confidence)

Andy Andrews - you're truly a blessing in my life. I'm working on internalizing the lessons you teach in your books and other mediums, and what you have to say resonates on some fundamental level that just feels like I'm having an epiphany every time I hear you speak. Thank you!

I noticed I didn't smile at all when talking :/ I started saying the alphabet with a smile 3x every morning to exercise my facial muscles to see if it would make a difference? When I talk about something I like now! :) It seems to be worth the practice so far :)

I have become very aware of all the phony radio adds, usually with women, who smile talk. I hate it.And now I understand why so many young women have to bob their head up and down while they talk. They are demanding agreement.

I think in certain contexts it's fitting to smile while you talk because it comes naturally (not out of habit). I encounter a lot of people that seem to smile all the time while talking and I can't help but feel it's inappropriate to do so all the time. It just feels unnatural, especially if I'm trying to have a serious conversation with that person. I feel like in a conversation your emotions should mirror each other and that should be communicated accurately to the other person - the people conversing should reflect the appropriate mood of the conversation.

I get what you are saying as I've seen newsreaders talking about serious crimes whilst smiling and it is really off putting. But for everyday interactions, it's really useful unless maybe you work as an undertaker.

I have met a few people that I think could tell someone what they are doing really sucks and still have the recipient not close down or get angry. I think it is a combination of tone of voice, language, body language, empathy, and an internal smile when they talk (with at least a neutral expression on their face). I think that a genuine concern for people and a curiosity about what they can contribute to the world goes a long way. "How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie talks a lot about that last sentence.

I always have this really big smile and a really happy look on my face whenever I talk but my resting face looks like I'm having a identity crisis. A lot of my friends can't tell if I'm really happy or really upset when I just feel neutral.

The reason people don't smile when they talk is because it's creepy. Especially if they are not talking about something amusing or funny. You are using something used car salesmen use. Smiling and shaking their head yes to foster a feeling of agreement.

People in the past have grinned and smirked at each other while I spoke. And I have found it so very off putting. I have autism. So that is why I can’t really interact properly with anyone. I have a Daughter, who is nearly 3 years old. Has that ever happens to you, about people grinning and smirking at you while you talk to them?

Some times it can be annoying though when they smile during the whole conversation. Like what's so frikkin funny? The conversation could be serious and they're like "😃" It can also be nervous habit. Don't give me that "oh I'm just happy" bih 🙄

Smile talking is purposely mismatching your body language with your words. It's insincere and in many cases downright creepy. Politicians, public speakers and sales people do it. Once you notice it, it becomes off putting. It's better to be yourself and sincere rather than practicing these cheap NLP tricks.
