We finally got to visit Australia, which was always on my bucket list. I actually came to Sydney about 30 years ago, but I was there more just a few hours so I don't think it really counts does it? On this video, I'll explore the central area, check out the Sydney Opera House and get some lunch.

Prices here are shameful! Just bought a sandwich for $18 and a coffee for 5.50..in the suburbs. Supermarket prices are just as bad. My rent went up from $560 to $900 a week for a one bedroom apartment. Won’t even go into how much all the other utilities are. Can’t wait to get back to Tokyo just to be able to enjoy food without the guilt. Yes we do have a beautiful harbour,but we’re working too hard to enjoy it.

Welcome to Australia! If you are still in Sydney let me make some recommendations… Go to the Queen Victoria Building really early in the morning. Around 7am. You can look at the architecture without a ton of people. It’s a beautiful building. Also the Australian Museum is very low cost and really cool. Also the Maritime museum is cool! Art Gallery is also epic. Also the Royal botanic gardens are gorgeous! I’m glad you went to see them! Also I highly recommend any kind of show at the Capitol theatre. More tips… Every place in Darling Harbour costs a ridiculous amount of money for food. Try to find a place closer to Central Station. Buuuuuuut I highly recommend the Sydney aquarium. It has one of the few Dugongs in captivity. Pig the Dugong didn’t thrive when they tried to release him into the wild several times so now he lives in the aquarium. You will find China town easily. It’s impossible to miss. Also if you take the ferry to Taronga zoo you go under the harbour bridge and get a perspective of the opera house too. Are you just in Sydney for a week? Next time you’re in Australia I recommend going to the Mid North Coast. Port Macquarie is a good place with lots of lovely place nearby to see beaches and bush land and animals There are affordable options but you need to go into the smaller places

Jacaranda are kind of our version of cherry blossom in several ways. We all comment on how many blossoms happen and the colour and look out for them every spring. Next time you’re in Australia let me know! I will meet you somewhere and show you some of my favourite things! Also there are better hotels to stay at for less money. All the places on the main drags and especially on the harbour are so expensive. Next time come to Taree or Port Macquarie and it will be less expensive and I can show you even more beautiful places than Sydney

And, yeah, the price of food (with no great konbini to fall back on) must have been a shock. The weather certainly did look beautiful! The cost of living here is why so many Australians are heading to Japan and causing issues with over tourism I guess. Glad you found some positives in your trip but totally understand your astonishment with the cost of tourism in Australia. You should shout out next time you're planning a trip to Oz, I'm sure there's plenty of us here who would be more than happy to help you find great places a bit out of the tourist areas (which aren't taking advantage of tourists wallets).

So alcohol is very expensive in Australia in general. I would suggest going to a bottle shop "liquor store" to get beer and drink it in your hotel. Hot tip for food, woolworths supermarkets have a ready meal section that has sandwiches, to go salads, rice paper rolls and sushi that is not bad and better priced.

I spent 3 weeks in Japan in October & could not believe how reasonable the price of food could be (maybe except fruit, although persimmons were coming into season and were an ok price); coming back to the food prices in Australia was a bit of a shock, even though I was only away a short time! The flame tree is the colour of Tori gates and looks amazing with Jacaranda. Eating out has become incredibly expensive over the last year, due to the cost-of-living crisis we are having. Please enjoy Sydney for all its free beauty and a cheap thing to do is take a ferry ride on an ordinary ferry around the harbour. Cheers, Muffy from Oz (Australia).

But I hope you had a great time nevertheless.

The most economical way for locals like myself to travel within Australia is: 1. book airbnb with functional kitchen in the suburbs outside cbd. 2. drive my own cars or hire a car in other cities if it is too far to drive. 3. shop in local supermarket and cook at home to avoid paying ridiculous price in the restaurants. 4. take public transport into the cbd if nowhere to park around there or you do not have your car.
@erictang4798

you are at the most expensive tourist trap Circular Quay n Opera House. Being a local, even I cannot afford to eat out there. The salary here is one of the highest in the world to make it very expensive to eat out at the restaurant as they need to pay good wages for waiters/chefs. We are serious shortage of hospitality workers here and push the wages even higher. I hardly eat out but cook 99% of my time as the grocery price in supermarket is tax free and much cheaper self catering at home. Japanese yen is so low to make it even more expensive for you guys. Try food court in Chinatown opening for lunch and dinner as they are cheaper than restaurants.

The diner you ate at is at the rich end of George street, up near Chanel and Tiffany & co. Try places closer to your hotel, around Market City, and Broadway Shopping Centre for more budget friendly options, up where there's more student accommodation. You may also get some good recommendations if you see a group of students hanging around, vloggers are common so most people are used to it. Pancakes on the Rocks in Darling Square I'd also consider pretty affordable for the portion sizes they offer.
