Low rated GM that Danya played was the 2nd GM from India after Vishy. He is slightly older than Vishy. Back in 1982 he beat then No:2 Viktor Korchonoi in London. Of course by the time Danya played, he was not that active :-). Still it was a crazy game for sure. This is another amazing lecture from danya.

These examples from other games to illustrate concepts are just golden. Widens the understanding of the game tremendously. Also Danya is teaching a very important point when to calculate and when just to trust your intuition and go from there. Lost so many games with better position only because of a time trouble, it’s better not to bother yourself too long with marginal decisions.

Yeah, but if you like chess literature/theory, you know that sicilian and sacking a knight on d5 are like twins (just like black sacrifices an exchange on c3 in sicilian as well) especially when the other knight jumps to c6 immediately. Easier said than done of course.

What a wonderful topic for discussion. I have been wondering how to not eliminate moves due to appearing promising on the first bite. I have only concluded that I need to ask myself. Is this a blunder or a sacrifice? (for piece moves that appear hanging) To force myself to look further as a candidate line before dismissing. For your move the question is would there be anything more to this move? But my concern is taking to much time to think through to many variations.

Usually 3 pieces are better than a queen but the combination of black's weak king along with the advantage of white being able to use his pawns on both sides of the board better than black gives him a decisive advantage if you turn on SF before white plays Qxb5.

Around 5:30, I don’t understand why black couldn’t sack the queen for the rook after taking the knight on h4 & then use the pawn as an umbrella. Black would have 2 pieces & a rook for the queen, & white’s attack seemingly ends. I feel like the resulting position is probably just winning for black objectively with that material advantage. Of course, I’m a 1300 & Danya’s a GM, so I’m basically clueless in comparison. I just want to know the follow up in that position because I win like 80% of the time when I have 2 rooks vs queen.
@archiebellega956
@archiebellega956 2 жыл бұрын
You can, but using Lichess, that lines gives you -2 position. The best move is actually to castle (-5 to -6). This is using depth 50 so better than the engine danya used in this video. And 2 rooks vs queen is easily draw in this scenario, because your pawn structure is fucked, so most likely the queen can hunt them down, or giving perma check. You're winning here because you're up one minor pieces, let's not forget danya sack a knight, which funnily shouldn't be accepted, accepting the sack is 0.0, while playing Ne5 is the best move, at -1.6. Shows you how complicated smith-morra actually is for black.
@matthewodonnell6906
@matthewodonnell6906 2 жыл бұрын
@@archiebellega956 That makes sense. Stockfish’s O-O is a lot more calm & collected than my idea, but I’m glad to know that mine would have worked because I definitely would have played that in black’s place after seeing that I could take the knight, simplify, & end my opponent’s attack.

Isn't it a great idea to sacrifice a piece in all speedrun games so we can see some crazy lines etc. and understand how a GM can beat a 1700 from being down a piece? I feel like regular speedrun games can get a little 'too easy' for you and they don't even provide that much educational value.

Typically in lines like these with Nge7 in the morra you want to play Bg5 before castling to force f6 or h6, creates weaknesses to attack later and the bishop will just fall back to e3 where it wants to be regardless. From e3 the bishop supports Nd5 by threatening Bb6 followed by Nc7 (or sometimes just trapping the queen on d8) if the knight is not taken in many lines, including Esserman's incredible win over Van Wely (I highly recommend looking up the game btw) and you can proceed with caslting, Bb3, and Nd5 in most cases regardless. Although the computer prefers castling over Bg5, the morra is very difficult for engines to understand. Creating long term weaknesses while developing is a logical move, I'm sure O-O is fine but every tempo matters so much in the morra and Bg5 is off the table as soon as Ng6 happens. Glad to see incredible players like Danya, chessbrahs, etc. playing this opening and showing how fierce it can be. Loving the series!

This game is a good example that just because Danya is a gm doesn't mean he knows everything. At 8:57 he says that 6...Nge7 is wrong. It's not, and modern analysis considers it one of the best tries. I know because I play it.

I think this session was very useful for me. When you play lower quality chess, and then teach us later why that move was sub-optimal, that is far more educational to us than say if you play every game like a GM. Ideally, you get in trouble, and then show us ideas you have that might get you out of it. And if you start losing one out of every 3 games, thats fine. What I am saying is, instead of playing like a GM, maybe you can play like a 1900 against a 1700, so we learn more.

"Ne7 is not the move as far as I know"? Bzzzzt. Standard theory, see chapter 7 in Esserman's "Mayhem in the Morra" (pdf available online). The correct response for white is Bg5 with the idea of inducing f6. Often a6 is played before Ne7, but Ne7 first as in your game is not unusual.
