Its really nice to watch these videos and come away feeling that what Daniel is saying is sort of how you like to think through the scenarios when you're playing. I think I'm an okay player, have played for a long time, but obviously nowhere NEAR the level of even the worst pro. So to know that I actually take the time to think through these scenarios that a master like Daniel Negreanu is talking about, makes me feel like I'm on the right track to being a better player. Awesome vid, thank you Mr. Negreanu

Very great breakdown Daniel. You chose a great hand to analyze. I was thinking the same thing about the river. It was a good spot to raise. Thanks again. We are so lucky to have many pros breaking down hands on youtube.
@MCFoultier
@MCFoultier 4 жыл бұрын
I hate a raise here, the blocker doesn´t really matter. If Hellmuth had a suited Ace, he´d raise pre instead of checking behind. He could have a mediocre flush, but then you don´t need the ace blocker...
@frankbattlejr981
@frankbattlejr981 4 жыл бұрын
MCFoultier You have to consider this: It’s a good possibility for Dan to have an A 9 or A 7 exactly like he has in his hand. So if Phil correctly puts him on exactly what he has, Phil knows one thing for sure and that’s that the Ace of spades is unaccounted for because it’s in his own hand. So let’s say Phil and Dans Aces were reversed and Dan had the Ace of spades...Then Phil raises him on the river for all the chips....Dan would look at the A of spades and know that’s highly unusual for Phil not to just call and raise all in if he’s really got the flush but he don’t have the Ace high because the Ace is in my hand? You understand now? That Ace of Spades being in Phil’s hand meant a lot because he could make a play on Dan with representing the Ace high flush. I 100% agree with Daniel that your only to plays is a large raise on the river or get out of the hand on the turn or the river because a straight call is more than likely just a straight give away of your chips because there’s nothing you can beat if your Phil.

G Q, great memory you have there. Yeah, I too remember that, Phil thought both times thought he under repped his hand and that at showdown he would have the superior hand. Weird to see a pro like Phil flat call all those bullets and flats on the river with a weak ace. What does he think he's beating there? The flush got there, maybe a missed straight draw but that's reaching. Smith would have raised a pocket pair that Aces would beat pre-flop. Does Phil really think Smith has A-2 or just a stone bluff? Thanks for the analysis Daniel, really helps me think about potential ranges of opponents based on their bet sizings.

Feels from outside like a fishy call, as the spade comes in the end. Ax is somewhere to the bottom of Phil`s range here. Blocking an A and the nutz does not feel to be enough. He loses to any 2 pair, a straight, or the flush, so it feels like a rather clear fold to me. He beats random bluffs, and merged hands turned to bluffs ( a 7, 4, or 65/85/53) . All in all, I do not see the 30% Phil needs to call. Without the arriving flush, it certainly would have been a difficult situation. However, I do not know the table dynamics, and if Smith is viewed as a wild spewer.

Not a pro, just a fish trying to learn and get better but would K7 bet all 3 streets? By the River, a K7 would be nothing but a bluff catcher and you would think Smith would shut down at some point. Phil only beats 3 barrel air hands and all worse pairs that probably wouldn't bet 3 times. A question would be would this be a good call if the flush didn't come in on the river and you could count a large number of missed spades draws that Smith would bet flop, and turn with and then fire on the river as a bluff.
@Badbentham
@Badbentham 7 жыл бұрын
I do not know whether it is exactly a great idea to merge K7 in this situation, but it is clearly always sth to keep in mind. And, well, it is a limped BvB spot, so ranges are as wide as they can get. So, it gets in general a pretty clear call when the flush misses , and villain way overbluffs his whole busted draws. The interesting question arises what his bluffing frequency should look like to prevent us from exploiting his over-aggressive betting patterns. However, it was an unraised pot pre, so he really should keep his aggression at bay, and for said reason , especially against passive or unknown players, one can still at times find a pretty tight fold. So, arguably, you want to call most (80% +) of the time, giving payout to AT+ (clear thin value in a blind battle) / 2pair+, and want to fold if you get "that gut feeling".

I sorta wish he spent MORE time talking while letting the videos play -- it's more fun to see the table play, people thinking about their position, get to see the board and the hole cards while he's doing his analysis (instead of a quick clip of the board and then back to him). I'd even take him talking a bit over freeze frames of the game to hit a point home. Also I imagine like everyone else Daniel might be annoyed at this point by Phil's constant whining and minging and playing the victim after he BADLY loses another hand he never had in the first place.

Hello from Brazil Daniel. Thinking over here If you could make a video about a common situation in live one day Poker tournaments over here. Most hands have a couple of limps or more before my turn to act, so even sizing up the bet at least 4 players will see the flop. How to deal with that? How to create a good range for raise in tables playing the limp/call? Keep up the good work.

Nice hand and analysis! I agree that calling is the worst option and it serves as a bluff catcher only, and the way the hand played out - 3 barrel bluffing is less possible in that spot. I'd like only to add that at Phil's river decision I'd look at Dan for any physical tells and try to pick something. Also it's important player's profile - how much does he like to bet his draws on the flop and turn, and also it matters if he is capable of folding strong hands like 2 pair or a set to a river raise! if Phil had a read on Dan that he did not have a flush, he can definitely raise, but I'd make it at least 650k to get the job done. Of course he commits that way a big portion of his stack, but if he had a tight image that would have worked high percentage.

It's a hard hand to analyze properly though if these two have been playing at the same table for a while, in blind v blind battles a lot of meta game theory comes in to play, there was also no pre-flop raise so both players are pretty much playing their entire range barring a few premium hands that would probably have raised unless they were trying to get cute. Also Smith could be barreling with a pair of 7's rag kicker in order to prevent Hellmuth from floating on any street because you can guarantee if Smith checks any street after the flop Phil is betting and he's betting with a lot worse hands than Aces. Hellmuth has played the hand in such a way that it would be difficult to put him on an Ace so he probably figures that smith could be 3 barrel bluffing on a well connected board. He'd certainly play some medium sized pocket pairs this way. He might even play 7-2 or 4-2 this way and the bet on the river looks like a blocker bet against small flushes. Because the bet on the river looks and feels like a blocker bet the case for raising certainly seems optimal, it would likely push out all Ace rag and medium pocket pair hands (which I know he was beating anyway), and certainly give 2 pair a hard decision to make.

Daniel, hoping to get your thoughts on this. I agree that calling the river is the worst option here. But if you do rep a flush what would be a good bet sizing? Because dan smith bet 200k so if you raise that we talking what 600-700k bet? Then you only have about 400-500k left behind. I guess my question is; what bet sizing would be enough to get dan smith to fold two pair here, and is it really worth betting a significant portion of your chips here with a bluff?

+Daniel Negreanu It's just bad play on Phil's part, he should be bluffing here almost 100% of the time. Smith can almost never have a lone flush draw with this line so he is automatically capped at an 8 high flush since Phil holds the nut blocker, and that is assuming Smith barrels 85 otherwise that's only 1 combo of 86s that Smith can have, along with 56s, 23s and 35s...just FOUR flushes in his range. The fact Smith is capped at an 8 high flush wipes out ALL of the hands Smith can river bet-call and beat Phil's value raise hands with, leaving Smith's holdings as 100% bluff catchers. Even if Smith calls with any flush, Phil would still be folding out almost 3x as many hands in the 1 combo of AA and the 12 combos of 44 and 77. It's 100% a raise Daniel.

Agreed. A riv re-raise from phil looks very strong given his line . It doesn't evennhave to b all in or even pot ! while smith perhaps finds a call 25% of the time .... that's the max and the riv reraise bluff here is the most profitable move.

I guess, looking at it from Smith's side, could he have looked at it, like Hellmuth raised, called, called, he might have been holding a flush draw, right? If Hellmuth goes all in on the River does he fold? Or am I wrong?

I don't know much about poker, but any highlights i've seen on the internet, it looks like Hellmuth is always just gambling without any actual knowledge. I'm sure i'm wrong, but that's what it looks like.

I don't consider Hellmuth in the same league as most of the players we see him up against.

After thinking about it I think you have to know how often Phil can move him off a hand better than Ace 3. To say calling is worse than raising.
