Does anyone get the vibe that it's cool and acceptable to show gratitude to certain poker players on KZbin, but if you do that with DNeg, it's the opposite? No one has done more for the game than Daniel and there is an atmosphere of disrespect towards the man lately. I'm on the other end of the political spectrum than Daniel and have many disagreements with him, but can't stand to see so many people claiming he is copying Doug Polk with hand breakdowns. Daniel has been analyzing hands for over 2 decades and sharing his thought process with the masses. This whole "old school vs new school" shit is rather childish.

appreciate the blow by blow analysis, and re-analysis on making yourself think about what hands you are potentially facing, how to act, and re-act, and re-re-act vs what your opponent does.. as in " Have a PLAN, like in chess, three moves ahead after what you do NOW".. cuz your opponent is going to do something.. fold, call, raise.. how YOU react ( ok, drag the chips in is the 1st ), is a big key. I wasnt, and still need to work on, looking past the bet i am making. But I am also appreciating the "moderate" approach early on, what "Small ball" poker is really about ( i was clueless when I first started really playing NLH ), and have watched it in action and seen the results. yes, big moves, fancy tricks, get the headlines, but i doubt they get you to the final table doing them non-stop.. just like a trick play in Football, you cant be pulling them out every play.. only for certain plays, and certain positions, also vs certain players. so Thanks Mr D...enjoy the commentary, tips, reads, and videos..

"What am I gonna do if he goes all in?". From Tommy Angelo's "Elements of Poker": "In a headsup pot, when you bet or raise, your opponent can only fold, call, or raise. If he folds, your next betting decision is not until the next hand. If he calls, your next betting decision is not until the next street. If he raises - and only if he raises - you must act now. That is why, when you bet or raise, there is strategically nothing to anticipate except a raise, and therefore, if you have not anticipated a raise, you not only made a mistake, you made the only mistake possible".

This is an amazing turn to lead. UTG will have very few 8's as they opened UTG, they will only really have 78s and 89s which there are four combos of (maybe some A8s if he's loose so he will have another 2 combos). He is also very likely to check an 8 back on the flop as betting does not accomplish much (although it does deny some equity to our opponents with overs to our second pair). However, whatever defending strategy the BB is playing he will almost certainly have more 8s than UTG 85s 86o 86s 87o 87s 89o 89s 810o 108s J8o J8s. Also we will always take a check call line with these second pairs. As a result we have such a huge range advantage I think we can lead the turn with out entire range. This should balance itself fairly automatically if we do it with 100% of our flop continuing range on this turn card specifically. While leading the turn with a hand like KJ does not make sense we must do this to be balanced. If the only hand type we check on this turn is a king then it makes us too easy to play against. Therefore we should be leading this turn with our entire range which continued on the flop.

Your hand breakdowns are great and super helpful; I thank you sincerely. You're the best, buddy! Here is how I think I would have played that hand in that position: I would def have check-raised on the turn. I'd put an utg raise preflop from a mid-big stack player on a hand somewhere in the broadway area... maybe a smaller pocket pair, but definitely not K8 or A8; maybe suited, but that is not something I'm too concerned about. So when the flop hits 6K8 rainbow I'd check my bottom pair and be prepared to call a reasonable sized cbet. But when the turn shows another 8 I'm gonna take advantage of that; 'cus like I said I don't believe that my opponent would raise utg with an 8, unless it's pocket 8s. And since my opponent doesn't have an 8, I do. So I would represent the set and check-raise here to at least $750.000. And if I get called - then so be it - I'm beat. But the play makes perfect sense: Calling an (almost) min-raise from the BB with an A8 or K8 makes sense. Check-calling the flop with mid-pair makes sense. Check-raising with a set makes even more sense. It's a perfect semi-bluff.

Daniel, There was a third option never discussed: (Before I say this..I just want to 100% agree with checking 99% of your range out of position in this hand!) -THERE IS SOME MERIT TO CHECK RAISING THE FLOP. What are your thoughts on this Daniel? How would you balance your check raise range on this flop?However, because you play small ball, do you ever check raise any flops? Is this why this option was never explored? Would love your thoughts! Thanks for being such an awesome ambassador to this card game we all play!

Thank you for the insightful commentary, Daniel. I doubt we'll get a rational discussion going in youtube comments but here goes: There was a slight inconsistency with your flop analysis. At 3:14 you say Opalikhin makes a smaller flop bet of 160K compared to a pre-flop bet of 175K. However, he only raised 135K pre. You make a good point about why pros would do this, but Opalikhin is def not a pro. As the last amateur standing, he seems to be playing the way he thinks the other pros at the table are playing. In reality, he was playing super tight. Glaesel reads him as a total nit, if you look at hand history. I think he puts him squarely on AA, KK, or AK opening UTG. The interesting decision point is still the turn and I think ICM factors heavily into Glaesel's fold. Could you comment on ICM for us?

Hi Daniel. Personally I really don't like the bet from Opalikhin. The 8 is very bad for his percieved range i.e How can Opalikhin have an 8 when he raises UTG and when he bets the flop. If he would check the flop with an 8, and check the turn behind with just a King (the standard play) then surely he is trying to tell Opalikhin that he has AA or better by betting two streets. If Glaesal check-raises the turn small, it looks so much like he has the 8 that Opalikhin just has to fold unless he actually DOES have AA or better, in which case Glaesal can then easily check-fold the river in confidence that he is not folding the best hand.

Another thing to pick up from the hand is the instacall on the flop. That narrows his range quite a bit. The monsters and the thin call would usually be something you would be thinking about. So the BBs range has alot of sixes and eights, as well as sone Five sevens and some seven nines. When the 8 hit the turn i guess it would improve the BBs range about 20 percent of the time? So i guess the right play on the turn from the UTG is to bet and bet big. Big question is if called, do we fire another bullet on the river?

He could’ve check raised the flop bet to see where he was at. Calling the C bet doesnt really give him a lot of information, but putting that pressure on your opponent can be key sometimes. And like Daniel said, you wont have a king most of the time, so a check raise not only defines his hand better, it tells him you’re aware that he’s just C betting to move you off of a hand you missed with the flop. And if the guy jams, you can comfortably fold most of the time since he’s probably putting you on KQ/KJ, which must mean he has that beat a good amount of the time

Good content as always Daniel! One minor mistake to point out: even though pros do use a lot smaller-size c-bet in tournament, and you explained the reason very well. Opalikhin's c-bet sizing of $160k in this hand is actually bigger than his preflop raise size of $135k.

I love the way you think. My game is pretty much exactly like yours, without the talking haha. Have as many opportunities as possible at as small a price as possible, "bluff" a lot, but conservatively so (smallish pots i know i can pick up, or i don't get too much into trouble if i get a call or raise). Don't be scared to "show weakness" by folding good hands, don't be scared to "show fish potential" by calling mediocre hands, and just abuse that perception whenever useful. Being creative with cards, but not crazy. It's super effective and i crush basically everyone who isn't a pro and actively puts huge pressure on me.

Hey Daniel! Love your new channel, here are some of my thoughts about the hand: I think you forgot one thing about the SB: You said his correct play is to fold A4s, which I respectfully disagree with. I'm mainly a deep stack cash game player, so maybe this szenario is a bit different in the latte stages of a tourney, but I think your standard play with A4s should be 3betting. Yes, you are against a (rather tight) UTG open range, and you are out of position. But even then, you can't completely ignore balance. You want to be able to 3-bet the top of your range here (something like 0.5*JJ, QQ+, AK), so you have to have SOME bluffs/semi bluffs. (GTO-wise that number would be ~16 combos) I think you can scale your bluffs down a bit due to the situation, but you'd still need to bluff at least 12 combos. 12 combos are three suited combos, so I would start with A5a, A4s and find one more (maybe 76s).

ahh he's gotta raise the turn on a paired board sitting on a pair. he could easily have repped that 8. plus far too often you're just going to be good there... especially if your opponent is aggressive. like daniel said it doesn't even have to be a big raise. a smaller raise probably looks scarier anyway. then if he pops you - you can just let it go and know with most certainty that he had it.

I know pre flop bet sizing doesn't get you folds. 5x open is just an invitation for callers. 7x 8x opens? I just always have to remember i can't make moves like y'all do. 4 card Flush on the board? Repping the flush w the A blocker. nope Still calling you. etc. Feel like you have to ditch bluffs almost entirely. Thx for the channel. Always liked your attitude.

hey daniel, i had a fun idea for a game i thought yinz might wanna try sometime. It's called one-time poker. Everyone entering the tournament gets a one-time chip with their stack. They are allowed to use this obviously only one time and it's value is exchanged for a sixth street. So a missed flush draw for your tournament life, for example, could throw in the one time for a second river. Excuse me if this has been done but if not it might have value especially in the current tv world with those extra 50/50 exciting run outs. anyhow as someone that loves the game also i was just thinking of more fun ways to play. Cheers - joy toujours

Thanks for another great video Daniel. What do you think about a check-raise on the flop, and if called shove the turn? Like you said, your opponent usually has nothing/ace high. Even with the times that they do have that king, such as with a UTG raise with AK or KQ, because the BB has a wider calling/defending range preflop, two pair or a set on the flop could be a believable story. Also there are many times where you can expect to have the best hand flopping third pair on that board. Given that your opponent will c-bet most of the time on a board like this, I think that putting pressure on him could be an interesting play.

You have so many better hands to check raise flop, basically everything else is better imo. Your hand is pretty good to call and then check down (you are probably winning) if u want to turn a hand into a bluff on the flop it should be a hand with little to no showdown value and/or a draw. 79 like daniel said in the video, even 10 9 or QJ with backdoor FD (you block a couple of the K the opponent can have) those hands have a much worse SD value than the hand with a 6 and draw a bit better against a pair of kings (or even a set)

If I were to draw that bottom pair, I still would have led out with a medium sized bet to see if I can sense how Opalikhin felt towards the flop. If he calls, fine. I'll see the next card. If he raises me, but it's a modest raise, I can either guess he trying to wring me a little or he's not so sure either and doesn't want to bluff with too much money for fear I call. If he goes way over, then I have a decision on my hands. Who knows how the rest of the hand would have gone. (Pros probably know, but I've only been playing recreationally for 2 months. Lol)

Hi Daniel what about check raising after the flop and rep the king? You could either take it down there - if you get re raised you can fold or if you get called you can hope to improve with the turn. Thoughts Daniel? - Many Thanks

Rob B Are you answering my question to Daniel with another question? The answer to your question is in my question - If you don't improve on the turn you check or fold to a bet. However by raising post flop with 1 pair you still give yourself the opportunity to take the pot down post flop with the re raise fold equity.

Glasel could have played differently by taking the lead betting post flop. If Opalikhin called, the turn made it easier to bet again as the board paird. If Opalikhin raised the bet on the flop, he could have re-raised to understand where his opponent stood. I guess, the hand would have played very differently this way and Glasel could have ended up winning the pot.

It is fun to watch the reaction to your since of humor. Question. It appears to me that your play is to win the game and then the result is the income.versus the players who are playing for the money. I guess that this is a key to your success. Ray Pollard

Thanks daniel! What do you think of a Re-raise on his raise .. that would put him in a hard position ? since he has nothing and know himself he doesnt have the King , he would knows that the pair of six or 8 is better , ofc he'd prob call , but that would make him think more and maybe fold but what if he calls you , and you raise it back with a good ammount , now he'd prob fold? well thats my answer , thanks for the video !

I think on the turn he could have min raised and that would have given him information and he probably would have been called but a call doesn't ruin anything. The on river, unless a flush card hit I would put out a medium bet...and hope.

I think, BB should have moved ALL-in in the turn. Because normally if someone has a King on his hand, they would check the turn . But he was still betting half pot when board gets paired, means he wanna scare the BB and make him fold Maybe. when someone has weak hand, they show strength. I dont know. I am just beginner player. ***If i was in BB with A6 of clubs. If no club or no strong flop came for me, I would check fold. or If i really wanted to win the pot with pair of 6, assuming opponent doesn't have king , I would check-raise flop and don'k bet turn.

If the aggressor did have the K, which is what he's trying to rep on the flop, why would he continue when the 8 comes? He would/should usually check most of his value hands here. The 8 should hit Glaesel's range a lot more. Another reason why the King should check is that the 8 is great card for Glaesel to bluff. If Opalikhin get check/shoved on, it's shitty spot. That's why I don't think a King would continue here, so if I had the six I'd be more prone to call. But that's easy for me to say that when I can see the cards but that would be my though process.

Love your videos, Daniel! It's way different to see the why rather than the what. What do you think about 3 betting preflop with a cbet follow-up with early position? More related to weak aces in a blind more than anything else.

Great video, this helps a lot, thank you for that. As an aggressive player I would have check raised the turn, although the flush draw was there, it would have been interesting to see how it evolves after the turn :) another spade and you'll might shut down on the river, the A of spades would have been catastrophic...still, in tournaments it is hard to find the best spot, you have to wait and extract the most value of the premium hands also if this would mean to bluff sometimes :) ...thank you Daniel and would hope to see more of this episodes...

Ah yes, if the decks second ace of spades came on that river, truly would have been catastrophic. They're playing with a rigged deck

Do you think Glaesel could've gone all in on the turn by re raising ? Considering if he actually made an 8 his bet size would've probably be bigger or he could've check raised if he wanted to play the trap strategy.

In your opinion, what are the best ways of rebuilding a tournament chip stack after losing large early on? Up the aggression or play passive and pick your spots?

You are the pro, I am not, but I would prefer to check raise than donk bet. Reason for me is simple, if I have A8 in that spot (for example) and I am looking at a player that bet on K high flop and I checked called, I am almost certain he is going to continue on the turn, then I would check raise. That is what I would do with an 8 if I had it, not donk bet. Lets say he checks back, if the river is a safe card I would then lead with a 70-75% pot bet. I would play trip 8's like that, check call the flop, check raise the turn and bet river. Is this an acceptable way to play my trip 8's or my bluffs, because lets face it if I he bets turn I not in a million years think my 6's are any good in that spot.
@pedroalmeida5775
@pedroalmeida5775 7 жыл бұрын
That's not true. He had A10s so when he hits the 8s he gets extra equity that he didn't have before, if it was 8c he might have checked back. There are safe cards on the river... you don't expect someone UTG to show up in this spot with 57suited or to double barrel on that board with a small pocket pair. So any low card non spade on the river it is a pretty safe card.
