I agree I brought my nephew home with me and my wife and I slowly started showing him stuff that is the need to do and showed him what not to do if he possibly could with deer hunting. he was probably 7-8 years old he’s 13 now and I made a deer hunting monster lollllllllll. He can come close to shooting as good as me. I got him into archery and muzzle loader and rifle hunting. Congratulations again on your success GOD BLESS

Thanks for sharing your shot for deer season. We also make deer a staple of our meat here in south central MO. Just yesterday purchased my first S/W 686-6 and it will be afield this fall,a little shorter (at 4"} barrel but just get up close and personnel. I'll look for the Handgun Hunter ammo. Thanks again

Hunted with a Ruger 357 w/6" barrel and open sights from 1998 until 2015 when I went back to archery. I took 4 decent bucks and 4 nice does with it (limited to one deer per year). I used Federal 158 gr Hydra-Shok jacketed hollow points. Longest was my first at 40 yards and the rest were all 10-15 yards. All but one dropped on the spot (including the 40 yd one) and the one doe that didn't, didn't go more than ten yards before expiring; made tracking really easy. I'm contemplating reverting back to handgun since my shoulder wont let me shoot a bow right now. I stalk/still hunt when I hunt with handgun and really like the challenge of getting close enough for a clean kill.

hey Johnny cool video! Was wondering how effective hunting with a 357 would be on deer 200 plus or black bear, guess up to 50 yards. I will be hunting the Adirondacks.Picking up a GP 100 5 inch. Thank you.
@johnnyshootsalot
@johnnyshootsalot Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Well, I would say it probably depends on a few factors. I think the round itself is capable enough to get the job done. This video adds confirmation to that since the doe you see me get was around 150lbs. And I think a well placed shot on a small to medium sized black bear would deliver similar results. I wouldn't want to go after anything significantly larger with a .357, though. And if I was hunting bear with only a .357, I'd want to be in a tree stand just in case I didn't drop it right away and it got pissed off. If you're planning on regularly hunting larger game, I think I'd make the investment in a .44mag or 10mm. I have a Taurus Model 44 outfitted with a pistol scope for anything over the size of Georgia deer. Of course, you could go all new school and just bounce up to the S&W 350 legend revolver. But that's kind of cheating a little...
@rainsong7327
@rainsong7327 Жыл бұрын
@@johnnyshootsalot Thank you , 10mm sounds interesting. You think the 10mm has more stopping power than 357? Or because the 10mm usually comes in a auto and has more rounds? Thanks
@johnnyshootsalot
@johnnyshootsalot Жыл бұрын
@Rain Song73 actually, they are very comparable. The 10mm is usually using a larger, heavier bullet, though. So you could make an argument based on that. But the generated energy is very similar. I have seen some folks hunt larger game with a 10mm, but after looking at a lot of ballistic numbers just now, I suspect the .357 would be equally effective, particularly out of a long barreled revolver.

Congrats!!! Handgun hunting is an incredible sport. I agree with keeping shots at fairly close ranges with mid power handgun cartridges. I can easily hit a white tail sized target at well over 100 yrds with a 686 without a rest but I'd never take more than a 50 yard shot with a 357 and no rest. With a 357 a 50 yard shot with proper bullet placement is very ethical. A very high powered 357 handload and an extremely good shooter may take this to 75 yards but not me. I cannot reliably hit a 6'' target while my heart is pounding hard and I don’t have a rest at 75 yards. Eating wild game with the family as often as possible is living well and living clean. It's better for us than animals we grow for food. Wild game isn’t filled with antibiotics, kept in a tight pens and fed cereal every day. I know many people don't understand how us hunters can love the animals and still eat them. To them I say this: If you still eat meat from the grocery store, you are still eating animals and those animals most likely had terrible lives until they were crowded into basically a box and then killed. They lived in horrible filthy, overcrowded conditions while wild game live as they are designed to live-free.

I don't know enough about the specific ballistics to comment intelligently on that, but it seems logical that the 7" barrel would indeed offer a measurable increase in velocity. How much and how it would translate to lethality vs a deer, who knows... I CAN say this, though: That .357 round did not pass through the larger animal i got on camera. It lodged in there somewhere. I think in her spine. However, it entered at a weird angle, as she wasn't positioned perfectly for a cross-body heart shot. But it dropped her in her tracks. The one I got early, off camera, at almost 50y, was a clean pass through heart shot and that only ran about 25y over a ridge before falling stone dead. So my GUESS, would be that if you can get a near perfectly angled shot, and you placement is very good, the 4" barrel should certainly get the job done with some power to spare. But if the shot isn't almost ideal, I probably wouldn't take it due to the decreased velocity and increased difficulty of reduced accuracy from the 4 vs 7 inch barrels. Then again, I've seen larger animals than deer taken with standard Glock 10mm pistols. I don't think those barrels are really much longer than your 4". Regardless, use the most powerful hunting load you can get from Hornady...
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 10 ай бұрын
The Ballisticsbytheinch website might help with velocity numbers. I also use Buffalo Bore's published data on their loads to get a sense of barrel length increases. Yes, a 6 or 7" barrel is faster than 4". The only direct comparison would be the exact same model of gun with the only differences being barrel length. For reliable penetration, typically you go 158gr or heavier loads with some good power behind them (Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Grizzly, DoubleTap). Exception is full copper bullets which are lighter but similar sectional density. XTP Hornady bullets, hard cast wide flat nose or semi-wadcutters, Speer Deep Curl bullets, Barnes XPB bullets, something that's going to penetrate fully and reliably, drive straight through bone and tissue.
@upperroomtoo
@upperroomtoo 10 ай бұрын
How did the bullets perform? Did you recover them in the animals or did they pass through? They seem a little light at 130gr.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 10 ай бұрын
It's a mono-metal, in other words, full copper with elastomer in the hollowpoint to prevent clogging on material and reliable expansion. Typically mono metal bullets are lighter than lead, but usually penetrate really well in spite the weight. It's a different manner of thinking, light-n-fast copper vs. slow-and-heavy lead.

@@exothermal.sprocket did you get full penetration and blood trail? I know the second one was a bang flop. I have six kids and they all hunt with a 357 Handi Rifle.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 10 ай бұрын
@@upperroomtoo I don't have personal experience with deer hunting, all I can do is go by ballistic research. If you're using 20-inch barrels with .357magnum, you basically double your energy over a 4-inch barrel, so long as your loads are from one of the boutique companies known for hot ammo. You might also consider a high-shoulder shot. There's debate with hunters whether the lung/heart shot is more preferred than the high-shoulder, so it's up to you to decide that. Search KZbin for this and you'll find useful data. The high-shoulder gets you into a central nervous system area at the base of the spine, can deliver instant incapacitation. There's certain risks with that too, but it's an option.
