That plug gets frozen in all of those style alternators on Lexus vehicles it’s super common doesn’t have anything to do with last guy who installed it. You can get a new pigtail/connector on eBay for $10 free shipping

Impressive that you were able to capture this from under the car. I don't envy you having such a difficult alternator to access. Good job with a challenging alternator and a challenging video shoot!

good video, one thing i can suggest, it's better to tackle the alternator from top. I just replaced mine 2 weeks ago, 1995 Ls400. Loosen serpentine belt, remove upper radiator hose (only from the thermostat) and place on the side, remove the power steering pulley and you will have access to the two alternator bolts. Unplug the clip and unscrew the positive line. Took only 45mins start to finish.

ivru1455 good idea but I wanted to avoid draining the coolant and having to buy more so that’s why I tackled it from the bottom.
@iamhowiam28625 жыл бұрын
@@SMOHKK I did that from the top and yeah, the coolant deal.
@Ivru5 жыл бұрын
you dont have to drain the coolant, just pull the top end of the hose and put aside with zip ties. Only a few coolant drop from the thermostat, plug it with a rag.
@iamhowiam28625 жыл бұрын
@@Ivru I did that last Friday, but a bunch of coolant fell out, it just kept pouring out. But I received a faulty alternator so I have to do the job all over again, this time I'll try from under.
@BlueXonar5 жыл бұрын
Can't see that being easier at all. You will still have to get under the car at some point to put the connectors on the back of the alternator.

Great video! Your patience with this job paid off very cool and knew what you needed to do despite the awkward position of that alternator. Highest recommendation for your video as I have the very same task in front of me with my ls400!

On the 98-00 you have to take off the ps pully There is a threaded hole on the ps pump that you can put a bolt in to keep the pully from moving when you try to remove the pully.

Great video, especially all of the great views from underneath, and the advice on moving the line to get it out. Not a straightforward job, but you definitely made it easy to see how to do it. Thanks!

That‘s a good angle that you are laying at it seems like it’s more easier to do it that way, (head 1st) so I‘m gonna try that tomorrow because it’s hard to get your plugs in place.

I got a 96 as well, I’m starting the think the 96 is the most troublesome year of the LS400 because everyone I know plus me who has a 96 always has something going on with theirs lol idk 🤔

Ellis Abraham it’s actually a great year... it’s just the age of the car...

My 1996 has 220k miles and I still cannot tell when the engine is running unless I look at the tach. All LS400s were amazing cars and were the most reliable of the LS lineup. This means 1990 - 2000. Hell, many say it's the most reliable car ever made by man. I tend to agree. The alternator failing has nothing to do with Toyota; they didn't make them. Also these alternators are the same ones used in multiple years so yours being 1996 specifically means nothing in terms of this failure.

I was looking at a 98 GS300 but I am seeing alternators the Lexus brand suck evidently. I say this because there are a LOT of alternator replacement videos. It is a Toyota/Lexus right???
@EatingGoodWithRickandJerre4 жыл бұрын
azimmey it is a Toyota ... to be honest any car that is 20 plus years old will probably need an alternator replacement at some point . It just a mater of time . A 98 GS is an excellent car

devin tell sounds like a problem with the ECU
@SMOHKK4 жыл бұрын
My LS400 battery died and I got a jump but I purchased a new battery from Walmart. But like a day later my ecu’s capacitors decided to leak and blow. It’s a very common problem with these cars but you can get your ecu fixed on eBay for a couple hundred . Or you can take a ride to your local junk yard to see if you can find one. Just make sure you purchase the warranty in case the one you get is a dud
