With you showing this finger picking, I had this in about 10 minutes. I can one finger it and thumb and index finger picking to real picking. Wish I had a better amp than my Crate CR 112. Thank you!

I am an absolute beginner and I have treated my daughter to a rendition of "Smoke on the water" via skype, she was well impressed, wasn't so impressed the previous day when in my excitement I "skyped" her and it was 5.30am where lives, forgot about the 10 hour time difference, oops. Andy, are you using finger #1 to hold down both strings, 3 & 4 and then fingers #3 and #4 (ring and pinky) to hold the same strings down as you move up to fret #5 and sliding back to fret 4?

It should have a setting called "intense" or "metal" on my amp its a small button but I have a line 6 amp so it may be different. :)

Is it a small tube amp? if not it, thats okay, basically set the gain or drive quite high around 3 o clock and set the other controls around 12 o clock, hope this helps :)

when you say one two the four, I find it confusing... why can't you say 0 an in open and then 3 as in third fret and then 0 and then 5 as in 5th fret. I find it hard to follow to order just by looking at your fingers while you say one two 3 4.

i learned this as 3 6 8, 3 6 9 8, 3 6 8 ,6 3 all on the 6th string at first then going down 2 frets on the 5th string and playing the same thing as a chord, is that way wrong?

+TheSlightlyHomosexualFeminist How my guitar teacher is teaching it to me. Is play the 3 and 4th chord together with a pick. Playing open, 3/4 chords muting the rest., Then open, 3rd fret and 5th fret, then open, 3rd fret, 6th fret, 5 fret, and open, 3rd fret, 5th fret, then 3rd fret and open. It's kinda a pain. I think he's doing this so I will get ready to start on power chords and maybe some green day.

if you listen to the actual song, it doesn't sound like only that whole riff and the 5th fret and 1st fret as the chorus. at least to me it sounds like the chorus is more complicated

ur a real good player, but, not to be a nitpicky jerk ur not playing it 100% right. theres a g on the low e string between most of the 4ths that u need to use ur thumb to fret. theyre timed to make the chickenpicked 4ths have an even more percussive. its not as obvious on the studio version cuz hes so fast u dont really hear them, but live its more audible cuz he cant do it as fast. watch the hofstra university "in concert" tv show footage. also, ritchie shows how to do it on the machine head classic albums series dvd. sorry about the length and pretentious message thats guna get me (deservedly) trolled. swing away, kids
