Smokey the African Grey during one of her rants. She speaks English and Vietnamese, meows like a cat, and recently started picking up barking.

Yes and no, there are some examples of parrots asking for things like food or water, saying that they want to play, or don't want to play. They mimic sounds, that's right, but when they use it to share something they want in the right way, then it is talking. We mimic sounds also, and we call that words.

It doesn't have to do with the size of your brain but going by your analogy yours should be quite small.

Amanda M. Reminds me of A German restaurant I used to go to , their African Grey used to say ," quote " FAT greedy bastards " every time clients came in , eventually the owner's had to keep her upstairs because of complaints . Sorry about the language but it just shows how they pick up on all noises as do young children. HARD WORK.

Do parrots of smokey's kind imitate their owners?
@vermillionskye3298
@vermillionskye3298 8 жыл бұрын
Oh yes. The African Grey is an incredibly intelligent animal. Their intelligence is thought to be equal to that of dolphins. They pick up sounds and new vocabulary very fast. They're extremely fascinating to have around as pets, but they're quite time-consuming and expensive.
@judgejoebrown9575
@judgejoebrown9575 7 жыл бұрын
depends, of course. but upwards of $2,000-2500 (USD) is a safe bet. and parrots are flock animals so they need a ton of stimulating social time. i'd say substantially more than dogs at MINIMUM. you need to build and sustain a relationship to make it worth your while and to give the bird the quality of life he/she deserves.

Angel Beaver Most adult parrots won't learn much new words. However, a yellow naped amazon is very different. Your bird could still learn new words; yellow naped amazons are amongst the best of talkers.

People always aak me how many words my CAG knows, but I always say that it's hard to quatify because words are only a portion of the sounds they integrate into their repertoire. My CAG has learned the sounds of car alarms, squeeky doors, microwave beeps, dog and cat soinds, and yes, colorful words that were said in anger when I dropped a screwdriver while putting a table together...

The African Grey is pretty incredible. I took care of one that had the vocabulary of a regular human. And, what a mimic, he was. Right down to sound like the garbage truck beeping to barking like the dogs that they had at home. He was quite the ticket. Miss him, I do. =)

This is awesome. What tips do you have for integrating an older Grey into your home?
@wingsNpaws
@wingsNpaws 10 жыл бұрын
Michelle Bullock Hi! I'd suggest putting the cage up against a corner in your living room where there's typically low traffic. It would help if the bird could see you while at the same time still feel sheltered since no one can approach from behind the cage and startle him. Whenever you walk by, drop 2 pieces of his favorite treat into his food bowl so he starts to associate your presence with something positive. Most importantly, move slow and calmly. Hope this helps!

This is great advice, thank you. I used to have him about 7 yrs ago and had him since he was a baby. When I moved, I had to find him a home. Do you have experience with their memories over that type of time period?

How quickly do gray's pick up new words? I was very surprised with my 2 year old rescue gray. He can pick up new words in under an hour. He's very very talkative but doesn't care much for toys or exploring. He also uses a lot of body and sign language. His morning chatter often involves a lot of movement with his feet and wings. When he says "Give me a kiss" he balls up his fist and kisses it. When he says "no bite" (he doesn't bite but I say this to my cockatiel often) he moves his foot as if it is my cockatiel ??? and acts like its biting him??? He'll say step up and practice it on perches in his cage sometimes. Also pretends to eat stuff and makes obnoxious chewing sounds. haha He's so strange. But its interesting I know the words he is saying have pictures/gestures/memories connected to them.

I admire the beauty and wisdom of Smokey which is a great and impressive reflection on his owner/trainer. I have an African Grey who will be turning 25 years old in October and she has been with me since she was 8 weeks old. How I wish I could bring her over to you to see in person and get your wise input. I have a question I would appreciate being able to share with the gentleman who posts the videos with Smokey. This is for you....or any other bird owners who are passionate about their African Greys. Please write me at RPK23@aol.com and put 'African Grey' in the subject line. Thank you!!!!
