Yes! He touches on this very thought in Hitsville: The Making of Motown. He knew that Smokey had surpassed him as a songwriter when he heard this. That he had gone in a direction he never even once considered going. Berry may have been the force behind Motown, but Smokey was just as instrumental in the company's amazing sucesss.

@@BillBird2111 Berry was still a prolific SONGWRITER based on the hits he wrote for his sparring partner Jackie Wilson and might I add Smokey Robinson's favorite and greatest singer to date. Berry actually told Smokey the fundamentals about writing a song. It's like a story. You have a beginning middle and an end. So ends the lesson.

I actually met this musical genius. At a Baltimore City Fair. He asked if anybody could sing one of his songs. I raised my hand. My best friend & daughter's father, DJ Curtis Anderson told me to sing. Cause he knew I could sing15-20 of Smokey's songs.
