You just taught me how to get a colony out of a friend's tree. He wants to remove the tree because it is too close to a new addition to his home. He hired a tree removal service that will not remove the tree until the bees are gone. He thought his only remedy was an exterminator. I will try this method to save these bees. Thanks.

There’s a bit of info about bee physiology from a FB post that I thought you’d be interested in. “Bees have 170 odorant receptors. Their sense of smell is so precise that they use it (to ) differentiate hundreds of different floral varieties...”.
@JPthebeeman
@JPthebeeman 5 жыл бұрын
Recycle BTW I’ve read articles about their sense of smell & sight, both are really quite impressive! Their sense of smell is actually more acute than a mosquito’s & they can pick up on things moving 5 times better than we can!

Thanks. Are beekeepers doing anything for them in this cold ?
@JPthebeeman
@JPthebeeman 5 жыл бұрын
Recycle BTW where bees are kept with harsh winters Beekeepers insulate hives & leave more honey for bees to survive. Other than that bees have the ability to cluster & generate heat so cold does not kill them per say. As long as they have food stores to replace the energy it takes to generate heat they will make it through winter. There are other variables that can come into play concerning whether they make it through but starving would be the biggest factor if they did not have enough food stores to get them to spring.

I have never seen a queen vacate an enclosed space like that before. She was one of the first ones out! Remarkable. Perhaps you sensed they might be willing to leave a wet, inadequate space like that, or that they hadn't been there very long (although you showed the image of at least some mature comb)? I imagine you or the homeowner later attempted to remove as much comb as possible, and then tried to fill up the space. Since it is outdoors and not in a home, getting all the comb was not necessary. Well done.

Bees are adorable when they have their little back legs loaded up with pollen. Why didn't you take down the tree in this one? I know leaving the comb in a tree isn't the same as leaving it in someone's house, but if the tree is hollow, you'd think they'd want it down anyway. Just curious. Good video, it was neat to see them leave the tree and march into the box. 👍

Goodday sir. What did you do with the queen? Any reason for manhandling the queen? I would simply put the frames in,actually they should have been in there already and closed the lid. I suppose there is an opening from bottom to top,so as long as I drill below the bees +/- the smoke will reach them? Thanks for sharing,Cobus🐳

Rusty Nail honestly, I don’t see this tree having that much of a future with a cavity such as that but trees amaze me all the time so what do I know. I’ve seen some that look like they were going through hell but are still standing after many years. Still, we have Formosa termites here that are downright brutal on trees.

Very neatly done, sir. Simple solution to the tricky problem of removing the colony without cutting open the tree. Kevin Byrne I worked with what I had at the time but propolis alone on frames & the interior of a hive box is usually enough to have their interest. After you apply smoke & repellent in the void space what choice do they really have then but to move into something with familiar scent, right? 🐝🐝🐝

@JPthebeeman
@JPthebeeman 5 жыл бұрын
Zaina Bazzy trees can be very challenging! The most success you will ever have running bees out of a tree is if the colony has not been there a long time or it’s a small tree or smallish colony to begin with. It can be nearly impossible at times to run an entire mature colony out of a tree. Yes, you may run some, perhaps most of them out but getting the queen to come out of a mature colony unless all things line up correctly can be a difficult task to achieve. A lot of it has to do with the tree itself & the cavity the bees are occupying. Often there are multiple cavities bees can run into that smoke or even repellent won’t penetrate & if you overdo it with either or both you can wind up killing the colony. With a mature colony in a large tree where the entrance is not too high from the ground you’re better off doing a trap out. Just keep in mind though that with most trap outs you don’t get the queen & you’re not removing comb with eggs obviously so essentially you are not getting the genetics of that colony. If the bees have to go then do a trap out or try to run them out but if they aren’t bothering anyone I would just leave them entirely alone. You can always place swarm traps out to hopefully catch some of the swarms the colony will eventually throw off. Hope this sheds some clarity.
@zainabazzy8981
@zainabazzy8981 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you ever so much. It does look like a tricky task and they have been there for a while. Will take your word and advice on this and leave them be, and will try the catch a swarm instead. Many thanks and gratitude for the prompt reply.
