I think yall might be misunderstanding the historical argument here and are comparing the wrong class of weapons. The question at hand isn't one of whether or not nations chose not to adopt "rifled muskets" due to rate of fire and fouling issues but whether they adopted "rifles". Specifically patched ball rifles before the invention of expanding conical balls like the Minie bullet. Once the Minie bullet (and the bullets copied from or inspired by it) entered the scene, literally every with a military worth mentioning started switching to rifled arms intended to use the new type of bullet. Particularly after the French and British armies using said guns ripped Russia a structurally superfluous behind during a number of key engagements during the Crimean War. A better comparison would be the 1842 Springfield Musket vs the 1841 Harpers Ferry Rifle using the correct style of period cartridges (which can be found in the 1850 Ordnance manual)

I totally agree, I would like to get my hands on a few things to test like a rifled Springfield 1842 but cost is clearly a factor. We could always use an 1861 Springfield with a patched ball as a stand in.

Never seen you guys before. Looks like you got things looking authentic. That was a really good comparison. But for the tactics used, a smooth bore would have been adequate. They were pretty good out to about 100 yards. take it back another 25 yards and you begin to see the drift of the smooth bore. A good rifleman with an 1861 rifled Springfield could hit their target out to over 200 yards. That was where the difference lies.

@@DeMoNxx666rifled musket can definitely shoots further than that. out to 600 I think. 200 is when you see a big difference between it and a smoothbore in battle

You don’t have to ram home so hard and as much, as long as it seat fairly close, you’re fine

while this is true, the closer you can get the ball to the breach the quicker it will expand and scrap out old fouling. I've found it makes a good bit of difference when shooting 20+ rounds a second.

You do understand that the people who talk about rifles being slower to load are talking about pre minie ball patched rounds… you’re not loading a patched round ball anywhere near that fast, nor are you shooting your entire cartridge box without swabbing the barrel. 🤦🏾‍♂️

heard, been doing alot of research on the 1841 Mississippi rifle and will be making a video on loading it with patched round ball per military doctrine of the time.

With a rifled bullet it spins giving it a gyroscopical movement stabilizing it in flight making it more accurate at distances than a smooth bore

Usually I see guys with roundball paper cartridges and flintlocks just stuff the whole thing down the barrel, paper bunching up between powder and ball (like this kzbin.info/www/bejne/jovLYqhpmZ51Z7c ) whereas you guys flipped the cartridges so they went in balls-first (lol) and ripped the excess paper off the top before ramming the balls home. I assume that you’re doing this based on some ACW-era drill manual. Do you know why this practice changed?

the cartridge I'm using is fictional. almost a blend of the American 1842 Springfield cartridge and the British Enfield cartridge. I have since switched everything to the correct pattern where the whole thing would be put down the bore.
