Trigger warning for loud sounds towards the end of the vid.
This was entirely edited, and was supposed to be exported, in 48fps, not 50. Funny thing is, Premiere simply doesn't allow custom frame rates in its export window, despite supporting it as a sequence setting. I could have exported the Premiere file into After Effects and added the sequence to the render cue, but I couldn't because AE threw me an error every time I tried. That, combined with the legitimately unbelievable amount of bugs and errors and crashes left me feeling so exhausted and numb that I ultimately decided it was worth sacrificing one 25th of a second's worth of timing here and there. If you catch any editing errors, that'd be why. Oh well!!

Fantastic rant, I love it! And you're absolutely right. I love how you underline the intent of the artist. Those who would seek to replace artists with machine learning and AI clearly don't understand what art is for. Replace stuff that people don't want to do, or can't do. But people get joy (and their livelihood) from creating art, and they want to do it. It's one of the things that make us human. I'm no Luddite, and I love using new tools to create my animation. But when it starts to encroach upon the fulfillment that I get from creating, then no thanks! You might argue that this is just interpolation and chill out. But my response to that is just wait, this is just getting started.

Low FPS animation has a very nice, cartoony charm to it. High FPS animation gives off energy of something that has been worked hard on, and should be taken seriously. Low FPS animations that have had their FPS boosted by an AI make me feel like I am experiencing eyeball cancer.

Yeah I’ve seen some of these “smooth jobs” and they ruin the choreography. It’s mainly the blows they ruin. What previously was the strike of a fist or weapon that you could almost feel the speed and weight of as it struck is completely obliterated by jamming frames in. The entire point of less frames was to make that blow seem so fast it couldn’t be perceived by the bare human eye, now it looks like my youngest sister is trying to kill me with a pillow.

@bobbobert9379
@bobbobert9379 3 жыл бұрын
@@clray123 The reason Google translate doesnt work as well as it needs to for human standards is because of the model it uses to translate. They use transformer models, which are giant networks of what are called attention matrices to try to be able to understand language and especially context. And with hundreds of millions of datapoints and months of computation time spent training on the most powerful supercomputers in the world these models can only get somewhat close to being accurate. And these models are approaching a limit as to how good they can be, as in order to increase accuracy for Google translates model by 0.15%, the amount of data used must be doubled. They're experiencing diminishing returns. That's because they dont model language the way that language actually exists, the way that humans and linguists have been modeling language for thousands of years - by turning sentences into dependency trees. Using dependency trees and starting from a linguistic standpoint rather than a computational standpoint to model language the way humans understand it is the way to go to create a translation model that can exceed the current models capabilities with far less time, data, and resources.

When I began animating a lot of my friends (including me) thought that more frames and drawings made better animation. But in almost every case, more frames just loses clarity and weight that the animation had before. If you're a capable animator, you can make shit look good with 2-3 drawings, depending on the motion. I don't know why people get obsessed with everything being 60fps

I agree to a certain point. With higher HRz in media and technology it's often jaring for me to watch something old at 12 - 24 frames. It looks stuttery when watching something that was made for 60fps or higher then watching something that's old. Almost like bad stop motion at times. Dragon Prince on Netflix was like that for me even if people liked it, I couldn't get into it. But I do agree that an AI doing inbetweens is an inaccurate way to fix this.

I just had this recommended to me. I am one of those gamers you mentioned, but I can 100% relate to how you feel because I grew up gaming at 60FPS. (Well, 50 because I’m Australian but that’s another can of worms.) 60FPS combined with simple gameplay resulted in VERY precise controls. The push for 30FPS because “It looks better now!” at the cost of control infuriates me to no end! And there are even “remasters” of games like Tales Of Symphonia that half the framerate! What I’m saying is, the next time you get one of these gamer types saying “This would look better at 60FPS” tell them that’s like you telling them their game would look better at 12FPS. They’ll probably have an aneurysm.

Exactly. Ai is usually never the problem, it's how it's used. Even in software engineering, people have said at some point code will write itself. That hasn't happened (at a decent scale anyway) because someone needs to actually design a program. Same with animation. AI can't do shit if the animators don't set a solid foundation. As someone who played on a potato computer for the longest time and only recently got a computer able to handle Skyrim (had to upgrade computers right before pandemic bc previous one was perma-dying fast), I feel this. There's a difference between wanting so many frames that something looks floaty and wrong, and wanting enough frames that your game's not lagging around in circles like a powerpoint presentation. Some games become unplayable with extreme amounts of lag. But I do get and agree with what's being discussed in the vid. In a similar vein, although it does look pretty, graphics don't need to be ridiculously fancy and 4k to look nice and be enjoyable to play. It took roughly 15 hrs of troubleshooting, new driver updates, and literal console commands to turn off stuff like bullet holes, most shadows, and anti-aliasing, for me to get Doom Eternal to run in an actual playable state on my laptop. It still noticeably struggles a lot with things like the sparking electrical wires in buildings, enemies that give giant flashes of light, and absolutely *detests* breakable walls. The game lags almost to the point of freezing entirely whenever I have to break a wall, and I've learned I have to just sit still and not move an inch for about 30-45 seconds while I wait for all of the particles/pieces to stop falling. An enemy shot a breakable wall with a large burst of light, and the game straight-up turned into a powerpoint presentation for a good minute and a half, only moving every couple of seconds. While the game is still pretty to look at, even on its own definition of 'potato' graphics, I'd still prefer lower quality graphics and being able to break walls without my computer threatening to shoot me in the knees. Borderlands is a good example of 'don't need ultra-hyper-realistic nonsense to look pretty, have your own style, and run smoothly/not powerpoint'. It's one of the only games that I can actually run on max settings for once in my life, with some of the fancy shadows and lighting turned on. It's by no means the only example, but it's the first one off the top of my head bc I'm very tired and need to go to bed soon

@@sgtjohnson49 The thing with games and their fps is that you're playing it and moving it. Games are made to be played at a higher framerate. Animation, movies, etc are made at one framerate, you can't change that. Film is 24 fps, usually no more, no less. Games are interactive pieces where things are run in an engine that plays frames.

How to make every single anime characters look like jelly when they are fighting punch by punch.
@weirdogirl1275
@weirdogirl1275 3 жыл бұрын
You want the puncher, especially his punch, to look solid like a battering ram and the person getting punched to look like he’s somewhere between jello and an actual person. If you are really going slow-motion for the punch itself, lean more into the jello factor. It makes it look soooooo funny and can really give a good comedic break amongst the intense fighting scenes. If you want it to retain intensity, pay more attention to the punches actually connecting and give the punched a really big reactive motion, like launching them across the space of the scene from the power of that punch. Btw, you should take all of this with a grain of salt, because I’ve never animated an action sequence in my life.

I usually don't play on 60 frames even on my pc that can sure as shit handle it. I just don't feel a need for it. So I don't understand the constant push for more frames, and how "anything less than 60 is lazy garbage". Like unless you're paying at a competitive level in some game that's very reaction intensive, those extra frames don't do anything but look kinda pretty. Sometimes.

@PotatoKingMike
@PotatoKingMike 3 жыл бұрын
@@alexbluer Frame count doesn't have anything to do with lag though. In fact higher counts are more likely to induce the feeling with dropped frames if a system can't keep up with the processing requirements. If a game plays at a consistent, steady 30 fps, it's doing plenty to give you a smooth playing experience.

Richard Williams gives an example of bad in-betweening in his book, The Animator’s Survival Kit, where in frame 1, there’s a nail sticking out of a table with a hammer swinging at it, and in frame 2, the hammer has hit and bent the nail. Good in-betweening would be to make a third frame where the nail is untouched, but the hammer has moved closer. Bad in-betweening would be moving the hammer closer (not touching) and half-bending the nail. AI, even AI designed for 2D animation, would probably do the bad version.

this is so relatable i would say it would be like taking a perfectly fine drawing and scribbling all over it thinking it looks good. ITS GOOD ONLY IF YOU USE IT CORRECTLY! (impact frames, movement in drawings and not animations, etc.)
