Not trying to sound like a know-it-all, but i see you making the same mistakes I keep making in my bow drill practice. Hopefully I can help? Spindle thumb thick, good. The length seems a little short. If you stretch your fingers out as far as you can, you want the spindle from thumb tip to pinky tip. That’s about 9 inches (23 cm) for me. Your bow should be as long as from your armpit to your fingertips. Move your arm from the shoulder, which your doing great on, but relax your grip a little and use your wrist to keep the bow level with the ground. Your form is good, but you want to drop your chest down to rest on your leading knee. This will get your bowing arm down farther into a more relaxed position and help keep the bow level to the ground. You are starting your spinning too fast with too much pressure, and this is the biggest mistake i keep making. When you first start spinning the spindle, start slow, pushing down only hard enough to keep the spindle in the hole. You are getting smoke too soon and charring the dust. It’s hard to be patient when you really want that ember and really need that fire, but you have to be patient. You want to fill the notch with BROWN dust, not black. If it’s black its already burned and there’s nothing to feed the ember. It took me a long time to realize that. When I did I started having a lot more success with bow drill. Once the notch is full of BROWN dust, then speed up to create smoke. Once you have smoke you are going fast enough to create the heat needed to form the ember, and you don’t need to go any faster than that. Any more speed and you are just wearing yourself out. You have to save energy for multiple tries if you don’t succeed the first time. Once you start getting a lot of smoke, you should have your ember. Take the spindle out of the hole, carefully remove your foot from your hearth board, then gently tip the board away from the ember a little, give it a couple taps with the spindle and remove it the rest of the way. Hope you see this and i hope it helps. Thanks for your videos. I always enjoy watching them. Edited to add: something i forgot to mention, try not to let the bow tap the hearthboard like you were. You don’t want to disturb the dust in the notch. And some crushed up green leaves in your bearing block will help lubricate it too.
@SmoothGefixt6 жыл бұрын
Whoo, great input my friend!! Thanks a lot for taking the time writing this! The BROWN dust you want and not the black is really an eye-opener!:) Man, weren't we creating massive smoke screens haha, al burned out black dust...:p In the editing the slow drilling was actually mostly cut out btw;) But I gues it should have been even slower anyways to prevent the dust going black! Looking forward to future bow drill practice already! Cheers, Julius

A trick I learned once when dealing with some kind of water crossing is to wrap all your gear up and tie it in a tarp/big waterproof piece of material. This bundle usually floats and you can swim it across to the other side. Of course, it's not applicable here as you only have the axe and knife so good job anyway!

You guys are a hoot. Love watching you. The bow drill....well...personally I think you are applying too much pressure. You are charring the spindle well and creating dust but going through the sweet spot and drowning the fiber pile. Back off the pressure. When you feel the spindle drop into the sweet spot just keep the same pressure for a while then bare down a bit more. You will notice you were getting good smoke for a while then it would become less so...you are drowning your pile and smothering it. I damn sure am not an expert by any stretch but I am certain this is the problem. But at any rate, very good content and you guys are truly awesome.
