on one of the earlier episodes of the podcast (or maybe it was reddit stories, can’t remember which one, i think angela may have been the guest) but shayne said something that stuck with me. he said (along the lines of) that in your early 20s you are too young to be putting up with the shit that you often find yourself putting up with in relationships. i just wanted to say that it really stuck with me and made me realize that my 4 year relationship was toxic, and that at 21 i shouldn’t be living this way. so i just wanted to say thank you to shayne for saying that and helping me think about my self worth in relationships and get out for the better. it’s been 2 months and i’m already so much happier

While the first few weeks were really hard and felt like addiction withdrawal, it's already been two months. Thanks to good support, I feel much better now and have been working on myself. Getting into dating again after so long won't be easy, but I'm somewhat optimistic. Whatever the case, it's much better than staying in a toxic relationship that was stuck and not going nowhere for a while.

19:38 “your joy is what people are attracted to” might have actually changed my life. I’m autistic and a HUGE people pleaser and I feel guilty for feeling joy very often because I’m always adjusting my behavior to what I think will make that person comfortable, and I haven’t found anything that has made me feel okay about unapologetically being myself but that little nugget has sort of altered my perspective. this is also one reason that I admire amanda so much, because there’s a lot I relate to her on but I lack her unapologetic confidence and that’s something I have always wanted to feel, and watching her as an example makes that version of me feel attainable. this podcast has actually been extremely therapeutic and made me believe in following joy again, and shayne has also played a big part in that as well as all the guests. basically thank you for doing this podcast exactly the way you do it 🥺

As a fellow autistic person, the moment I truly let myself be me, I met the love of my life. Not only that, I started to make friendships that actually lasted. Id always had an issue with letting friends fall off after a year or so. I never realized how much work it truly was to change myself to fit the people around me. It was so strange to not have to analyze my feelings constantly to keep them under control. Five years in and 3 months away from a wedding, the best advice I could ever give someone is to do your best to just be you. It may not change your life as quickly as it did mine, but it absolutely will change it.

for the question about how to talk to a male friend who’s exhibiting toxic behavior in their dating life: open, honest and direct communication. if you don’t believe their toxicity is the whole of who they are, TELL THEM THAT. Ask them questions, be curious and tell them that you don’t believe that’s the image they want to put out into the world. if he gets angry and more toxic, that’s *his choice*. you can’t control how people respond to you, you can only control what you say to people. if you really care about that friend and don’t think the toxicity is something you believe to be true about him, say that and ask if he’s doing that for any particular reasons. literally just communicate with people

Something I’ve personally experienced through my own life as well is that sometimes, if someone’s not growing and won’t change their toxic views and emotional responses to situations, you have to let them grow and change themselves if they ever do I’ve went through it myself And unfortunately I’ve had the “displeasure” of talking to a close friend of mine about his toxic and generally negative worldviews on people and concepts and he just wouldn’t budge I won’t get too much into his views but I did have to sit down and talk to him about how he refers to people and how he generally just belittles people for things they can’t control and he just didn’t really seem to care that it was harmful not just to other people but himself

I’m happy Shayne and Amanda bringing up that sometimes people with toxic mindsets are a lost cause. I know the question about friends, but I feel femme people have such a huge pressure to “fix” their masc partner (the “I can fix him” trope is a trope for a reason). Both myself and friends of mine have stayed in relationships way longer than we should have because we believed if we juuuust put in more effort to get them to change they would. People can change, but only if they want to, and learning to recognize if someone is open to change or not is a life skill. Listen to you gut, it’s the best danger sensor you have

So happy I didn't let the fear win as we are now happily married for 3.5 years so far. Don't let your own fear stop you! It was totally unlike me to put myself out there like that, but it definitely paid off
@icelily17619 ай бұрын
Their advice for the first question is so true, you have to make yourself go outside your comfort zone a little bit and focusing on not dating but friendships. When I started college, I told myself that I was going to put myself out there and make a friend. It was terrifying, as I also had bad social anxiety and none of my childhood friends had gone to the same college as me. So, as scary as that was, I forced myself to go to campus events, and I found the club where I met someone that shared the same interest as me. He introduced me to another of his friends, and we decided to get dinner every night together (different majors). Eventually the three of us became inseparable, still I didn't focus on dating but just enjoying myself. Eventually, after about a year and a half, that boy I met that became one of my first friends and best friend became my boyfriend. And 3 years ago we got married! And it all started because we both pushed ourselves out of our comfort zones and became friends first. You can do it too, if you want to find a romantic partner (or even a platonic life partner!) but you HAVE to make yourself take the chance and do something you find scary.

I wrote this in my vows to my husband, we found each other because we were unabashedly ourselves and weren’t afraid to be who we were. The cliche just be yourself and stop looking really is true. It’s much better to be yourself and love yourself and be single than create another person just to be in a relationship.

My dating advice would be to do the thing you were going to do anyway like go to a coffee shop, bowling, or the bar if you want to and just ask a person to go with you as a date. You would still be doing what you were going to do even if you get rejected. So if rejected, your not down about it or even changing your routine. You also seem more confident doing asking since it wouldn't be a big deal because you would be just having person you would like to get to know come along.

Going back to Amanda saying find something that brings you joy, hobbies, and make yourself happy…. This reminds me of something my mom told me growing up and I live by it. You need to love yourself before you can truly love another person. And once you love yourself and stop searching, love will happen when you least expect it.

I liked the rolling the ball analogy too, and just wanted to add that sometimes it feels like someone is pitching it rather than rolling it and sometimes it's like they are trying to hit you with it and then are surprised and offended when the other person doesn't catch it/throw it back.

My wife decided to do a study abroad semester while we were dating, and it was great for both her as an individual as well as us as a couple. The time apart was great for her own growth and proved that our relationship was more than just physical.

This was so fun to listen to. I met my husband online almost 15 years ago. We talked on the phone for a few weeks then finally met in person. I had a job interview in the afternoon so we met at a mall and walked around with dessert until I had to go. 13 years of marriage and 2 kids later we're still very much in love with each other.

Guys, I had a dream where Chance shouts "Is that Shayne?! The representative of the Gnome people?!"🗣🔥🔥 And Shayne walks out in a suit and a white beard with a gnome hat, and says “Hello, my fellow gnomes.” impersonating Barack Obama. I literally had a TNTL moment in my dreams, I think I’m going crazy.

Flirting is one of those things you'd need to have a discussion about, I think. So partners can know each other's boundaries since it can be subjective with what is considered flirting and what is okay or not okay. Also some people don't like it at all, while some people like to see that their partner is considered attractive and makes them feel lucky to be with them, etc.

Shayne I suggest you checking out the 500 best albums list on Rolling Stones. It is great to just listen through albums that made history, especially if you are not a music person with a specific preference in genre.

This might be TMI, but while my brother was in the bathroom, I'd sit in the tub with the curtain drawn because I just wanted to be around him 24/7 as a little kid. My family doesn't know boundaries.

In Finland Valentines day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates to Friends Day and its all about celebrating friendships instead of exclusively romantic relationships and I love that so much more!

To Shayne’s concern regarding making the woman feel save and not coming off as a creep, I agree with Amanda that saying you have somewhere to be for a time constraint comes off as uninterested. I think the main things men can do (in my opinion) to make women feel safe is to have the date during the day, pick a public location (NO waking trails, if the park is an open grassy area where other people are constantly in and out and lounging, then fine, but NO nature trails, this is isolated and sketch af), and to the concern about trying to make the woman feel like they can leave and the date can end if they want, you don’t need to prove all of your non creepiness at once, in fact, trying to convince a woman that you aren’t creepy by overdoing everything will probably be alarming. Set the date up for success in being non creepy with the location/time of day, and then let your actions/reactions in the date tell her the rest. If the woman wants to wrap up the date early then she will, and your reaction will tell her everything she needs to know about how you handle this abrupt/early end (did you get mad/aggressive with the plans not going how you expect or did you smile and say you had a great time and leave?) Relationships are partnerships, so dating should be ways for you to both figure out if you are fit for a partnership (can one of you set a boundary or end something when you don’t want it to continue? Can the other respect and support this decision?)

As a person that’s been single for three years after a 6 year relationship, it seems I may just need friends. Or even just A friend. I’m so antisocial and isolate myself too often I think… 🤔 This was kinda of painful, but I thoroughly enjoyed this entire vid and all the different perspectives and pieces of advice.
