Would the Tillman designs and other 20' armed ships actually have become a legitimate ship built and used had it not been for the Washington and London naval treaties, it just seems to me like the pure size and cost of such beasts would limit even the richest of countries only a few ships at the most, and likely never bothered with as they'd be seen as overkill, and eventually a waste with carriers becoming the main force on the seas

I have seen a USNI picture of Tirpitz painted to look like a row of waterfront buildings, including windows and doors, during her fitting out at Wilhelmshaven. This was to hide her from British air attack. Besides pretending to be a block of flats or perhaps an island what are some other outlandish and/or hilarious ways used to hide a warship?

How about a series about scrapping warships in detail? I'd be curious to know which parts would generally be stored for later use by the navy, what was considered high value salvage and what wasn't worth more than the raw materials. If possible also some stories about specific parts reused on later warships, I read about main battery guns being switched to newer ships or converted into coast defense batteries, but I'm sure there were cases of machinery and other equipment being reused, especially from battle damaged ships that weren't actually obsolete at the time they got scrapped.

In response to your question. Drach recently published "Western Approaches", WW2 British convoys and ASW. The HQ was in Derby House in Liverpool. In the midst of the Blitz, they had to operate 24/7. So they had a backup power generator. It was powered by a engine taken from a captured WW1 German Uboat. Read: 'Game of Birds And Wolves' by Simon Parkin.

Here is the german wikiperry page of the Beowulf de.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_Beowulf You will find those names on the list very interessing if you dig deeper into, it's just a start. I hope you can do a extended guide of the Siegfried class in the furture or video about the history of german coastal defence forces that would be nice :) I have ancestor on my mothers side on the family who served on the Beowulf as signal officer under captain Gottfried Freiherr von Dalwigk zu Lichtenfels and captain Paul Ebert(later Admiral, marine intelligence 1918/1919) between 16th september 1892 and 14th march 1916. It's a disaster that none of the great Europe's battleships could survive as museums. Just the UK built Mikasa, that's all. It was scandalous that the Goeben/Yavuz that Turkey tried to sell back to Germany was not preserved, but we must to recognise that it would be another pretext to insult them.

The prusian navy did try to buy and build ships in the netherlands for iron clad ships , how ever the dutch naval yard slip ways where to small to build them. and prompted on a restructure of its shipbuilding capabilities. The 9.4" or 24 cm guns where a primary weapon with the dutch navy, featureing on many ships including armoured cruisers and later coastal defence ships. even the seven provincien would have carried 4 of them but in twin mounts. till they decided to install 2 single 11.1 inch guns, and would have seen a return in a modern proposal of a modern armoured cruiser with 9- 9.4 inch guns as an alternative for the battle cruiser project 1047. ( still a bit of a mystery on this armoured cruiser as the dutch where still missing on aditional cruiser for their 6 cruiser plan.)

I have always found the ships built up to the HMS Dreadnought the most interesting; the world was still getting used to the idea of ships not needing sails, or guns that fired solid shot. The result were some very unique ideas, such as round battleships and the USS Vulcan that used air pressure to fire it's shells. The Royal Navy made some interesting ships as well, and some were tragic mistakes, but the step by step progress was just fascinating!

For all the sloppy commentars, the ships were build mostly as mobile batteries, in shallow waters, they could even fall dry, without problems. So you have to build a flat bottom, which is no good idear for a high sea ship. Even the " french" steampunk Look was not a big problem, as the ships shoud not fight in Battleline. The Tactic was to stay in shallow water.
