After doing a few years of retail I’ve learned asking any opening question that can be answered with a no is going to give you that “I’m just looking” response. After opening the opportunity with a light hearted joke, I ask “what do you have going on today?” 8/10 times I get more information about what brought them in and gives me an chance to build a relationship. Never ask a close ended question when a customer enters the store.
@Ælfgifu-13 жыл бұрын
My answer would have been, "None of your business." Look, just ask, "May I be of assistance," once and only once. Have a little dignity, and don't make a nuisance of yourself. You are a sales associate, not a five year old begging for a cookie. Respect that no means no, and "I'm just browsing" means no. Don't be nosy or patronizing. Assume that they are intelligent enough to know their own mind. These days, it is easier and faster to shop online, where there are no pesky sales associates. You would do well to remember that, and not drive the customer away from the shop.

Often when I walk in retail stores, I look at the signs for their discounts but wished employees would actually tell me about it themselves so i’m not roaming around lost.

When I was asked, "Are you SURE you don't need assistance," (five seconds after the last sales rep had asked) I asked if there was a particular part of, "I'm just browsing" that she didn't understand, or, if there was a reason I wouldn't be SURE after saying five times that I didn't.
