I live in Tunisia where airport officials are among, if not the most relaxed in the world. I flew in on a British passport with £25 in cash and no hotel reservation - the guy who was supposed to look at the scanner was chatting to a cutie and smoking. I overstayed my visa and have been here, paying fines every time I overstay my 90 day allowance for near enough 2 years. After returning from Spain with 'salo' (Ukrainian pork, itself smuggled into Spain), they asked me what I had in my bag, I said "clothes, laptop..." and they waved me on (though I am European). Tunisian police are afraid of hassling foreigners and I can see why Cubans would wave someone out of Cuba without being anal. If they bought something illegal, they're taking it out, not bringing it into Cuba - and this helps bring foreign currency into their economy.
